Mitt Warns Illegals: 'Get Off My Lawn'

By Michael Dobbs

Romney in New Hampshire.

"There are those people in both parties who are in a sanctuary state of mind, who believe in sanctuary cities, who believe in policies which are sanctuary in nature."

--Mitt Romney, speaking to reporters in Iowa, November 14, 2007.

As a presidential candidate, Mitt Romney has made a big political issue out of his opposition to illegal immigration, lambasting Democratic and Republican rivals alike for failing to crack down on the phenomenon. He has accused Rudy Giuliani of allowing New York to become a "sanctuary city." Yesterday, he denounced Hillary Clinton as an "open border Democrat." But his own record as governor of Massachusetts in cracking down on illegals was patchy. Do we detect a whiff of hypocrisy here?

The Facts

Illegal immigration was not a big issue for Romney when he was elected governor of Massachusetts in 2002. He vetoed a proposal to allow the children of illegal immigrants to benefit from in-state tuition rates at local universities and opposed the idea of drivers licenses for illegals. But in a November 2005 interview with the Boston Globe, he appeared to support suggestions for immigration reform advanced by Arizona Sen. John McCain, describing them as "reasonable proposals."

Romney's positions hardened in 2006, toward the end of his four year term as governor, as he thought about running for president. That summer, the Romney administration began talking to the Department of Homeland Security about authorizing state troopers to detain undocumented immigrants. An agreement was signed in December 13, 2006, three weeks before the end of his term, but was rescinded by his Democratic successor before it could go into force.

The tougher position on illegal immigrants followed publication of a June 18, 2006 Boston Globe article describing how the state was paying millions of dollars to contractors who employed undocumented workers. An even greater embarrassment came in December when the Globe discovered that illegal immigrants from Guatemala had been tending the Romneys' 2 1/2 acre grounds for a period of eight years. Romney said he was unaware of the situation and blamed the contractor.

"Sanctuary cities" are certainly on Romney's mind these days. But he did not take any action to penalize towns in Massachusetts that adopted "sanctuary" policies toward illegal immigrants while he was governor. At least half a dozen Massachusetts communities, including Brookline, Somerville, and Cambridge, adopted resolutions encouraging illegal immigrants to make use of city services and report crimes to the police.

"We never heard from him on this issue," the mayor of Somerville, Joseph Curtatone, told me yesterday, when I called him to check up on what Romney had actually done against "sanctuary cities" as governor. "I never heard him talk about 'sanctuary cities,' until now. As far as I know, he never took a position on this."

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden said it was up to the federal government--not the state government--to take action to negate the sanctuary laws of towns like Somerville. "The problem with sanctuary cities like the one mayor Giuliani ran in New York City, is that they ignore FEDERAL immigration law, not state law," Madden said in an e-mail.

It is true that responsibility for enforcing federal law rests primarily with the federal government. But Romney's own eagerness to authorize state police to pursue illegal immigrants would appear to undermine the claim that he had no influence over "sanctuary cities."

Speaking of Romney's statements on immigration, it seems an exaggeration to accuse Hillary Clinton of favoring an "open border." Her platform includes proposals for increased border security and "stopping the flow of undocumented immigrants."

The Pinocchio Test

Romney's attempts to position himself as "the anti-illegal immigration candidate" are reminiscent of his attempts to establish himself as the "pro-gun," "pro-life" candidate. See my earlier look at his twists and turns on the abortion issue. Senator McCain captured the hypocrisy best when he joked that Romney's immigration policies boiled down to a wish to "get out his small-varmint gun and drive those Guatemalans off his lawn."

A suggestion, Mr Dobbs. As you broaden the examination from testing a narrow factual claim to determining the candidate's "hypocrisy" in the context of a long record, you tend to editorialize. While this may be entertaining and informative, it is misleading to call it "Fact Checking".

The lead quote in this column is so vague and broad it is impossible to disprove, "people in both parties" is an easy bar to pass. There are "people in both parties" who believe practically anything. However, his claim Sen Clinton favors an "open border" is narrow enough to define and confirm or disprove based on specific policy proposals.

Just my two cents.

Talk is cheap, lets see what Romney actually did.

The Facts: He vetoed a proposal to allow the children of illegal immigrants to benefit from in-state tuition rates at local universities and opposed the idea of drivers licenses for illegals. (In the summer of 2006) the Romney administration began talking to the Department of Homeland Security about authorizing state troopers to detain undocumented immigrants. An agreement was signed in December 13, 2006, three weeks before the end of his term.

Sounds pretty clear to me.

By the way, this whole "open borders" charge the GOP keeps resorting to is just inaccurate and misleading. It's something only the Limbaugh's ought to be throwing around, not leaders of the party.

I read a "fact" check type blog at a paper in St. Petersburg, Florida. It did a much better job than this blog. This one feels way too contrived. The facts should speak for themselves not have the author play hairdresser.

My God!!! Instead of correcting the larger falsehood that Clinton wants open borders, FC scrutinizes the smaller falsehood that Romney's record on immigration is something to write home about.

Once again, with all the objectivity of the Spanish Inquisition, Michael Dobbs judges right-wingers with a feather, while doing nothing to stop the fierce gavelling of those on the left. (That's on the days that he doesn't go after them with the sledgehammer)

At least things have improved to where Dobbs is actually checking "facts". Perhaps we can see some advancement into "relevant" facts territory before Christmas.

You know, one of these days, I'm going to get banished from this particular forum. My only hope is that by the time that happens, this column gets banished to the appropriate century.

Another thought, this ratings system is antithetical to "fact checking" and fraught with problems. A claim is either true or false, the rest is opinion.

Wasn't it not until recently (in the past year or so) that Romney took a trip to San Diego where the local border agents told him the sure-fire way to control illegal immigration. Telling him that even though they have a double fence, that about 60% of the illegals still make it into the country. They told him that if he found a way to shut down sanctuary cities, he would find a way to snuff out illegal immigration. To me it's irresponsible to report only a portion of the story. This is entirely irresponsible journalism, and frankly I want someone who is going to get the real story from people on the ground and take a stance based upon reality, even if that means taking a harder line on one area than of illegal immigration than you did before. That's called leadership - that's called "we the people"!

"The Mormon colonies in Mexico are towns near the Sierra Madre mountains settled by early Mormon pioneers. They were founded by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Brigham Young, Jr., and Charles Sreeve Peterson, in the 19th century as part of a large colonizing effort instigated by Brigham Young, which dotted the map of western United States, southern Alberta, and northern Mexico with Mormon settlements.

The two surviving Mormon colonies in Mexico are Colonia Juárez and Colonia Dublan. Both colonies are located in the state of Chihuahua, in the general vicinity of the Casas Grandes archaeological area. The Colonia Juárez Chihuahua México Temple, built in 1999, is located in Colonia Juárez, and is currently the smallest temple the LDS Church operates. In addition to the locations in Chihuahua, other (now abandoned) colonies existed in Sonora.

Members of the Pratt-Romney family have roots in these colonies, including both Marion G. Romney and George W. Romney having been born there." -Wiki

When I ask a person is it wrong for an adult to have sex with a five year old child and the person responding asks, "Who's the person we're talking about," I know that I'm dealing with a corrupt and unstable mind. They lack sufficient critical linear thinking skills to make adult determinations or they simply don't care about the principle differences between right and wrong.

I can go beyond the innuendos and suggestions that Mitt Romney has done something hypocritical when it is understood that as an elected representative some men will compromise their personal beliefs and give place to the will of the people. Aaron gave the people their Golden Calf and Samuel gave the people their king!

It is the suggestive way that Michael Dobbs attacks Mitt Romney and the sinister way that he attempts to make speaking facts and telling the truth about Hillary Clinton to be some kind of divisive act that concerns me.

By slandering Mitt Romney he still does not deal with his statements about Senator Clinton's open border policies and her inconsistent statements and positions (such as her official voting record) on illegal immigration. She has voted against protecting and securing our borders! But she has traducers to do her dirty work in the media and try to make the truth look like a lie! Somehow the obfucation of Hillary Clinton's positions are not something that we are to be concerned about? So long as she only has to deal with fake and planted questions and attack dogs to divert peoples' attention from the question of her real position on ILLEGAL ALIENS and her solution for the problem.

What nonsense. The facts are true, but your opinion is that you don't like him. If he proposes to do something with state troopers, then .... he hasn't done enough. Is that logic?

This whole immigration debacle goes well beyond Partison politics. If the government estimates there are 12.5 million illegals in this country there probably really are 20 million.a number difficult to hide even in so called sanctuary cities. What realistically can be done in a civilized manner. There is enough blame to go around for everybody so "THE" problem just has to be faced. The recent dancing of various candidates is enough to make you sick.they don't seem to have a clue.It is the responsibility of the Executive Branch to maintain the integrity of our borders and to keep them safe.No President regardless of politics has had the will to do anything about it.At present the tactics of the INS is to raid plants[even if they have precooperated],round up people with as much media coverage as they can and then charge the companies on the front page of newspaper before the companies have been served with legal papers. The guilt by headlines trick. At the moment the INS is in an unwinnable situation. They have few trained people and patrolling the border is like trying to bail out the Ocean with a sieve. However not intentionally the government is cutting the throat of productive physical companies everywhere. If there are people in the US preying on these people and using them as slaves then they should be hung. But we are talking about agriculture, construction and food companies paying the same as americans but are desperately short of people to operate.I have not seen any American politician jump all over the Mexican government for creating such a rotten economy that about 30% have left in 20 years.Vincente Fox has earned his permanent responsibility to stay in Mexico. Now you have an added bomb to employers. They use the federal computers [which a private company cannot use] to create lists of illegals with what they believe are people with forged or nonexistant documents. Then after so many months if they can't provide legal papers the employers "must fire them" or risk severe criminal penalties. To get publicity the government is in a very real and measurable way killing a lot of its own industry.

Poor people are addicted to cheap Chinese goods at Walmart. Rich people are addicted to cheap labor from South and Central America.

Poor people want good jobs, but hurt themselves and their neighbors through their addiction to cheap Chinese stuff.

Rich people want quality work and good neighborhoods for their children to live in, but their addiction to cheap labor does not afford the quality (usually), and the immigrant labor divides cities into haves/have-nots and english-speaking/english-speaking-not.

An immigrant is someone who enters our country LEGALLY. Someone who does not is not an immigrant, but an invader or interloper.

And it is a federal CRIME, a FELONY, to enter the country illegally.

Hence, someone who entered our country illegally, commonly referred to as an "illegal," is a CRIMINAL.

Further, the illegals are NOT the "We the People..." spoken of by our Constitution.

They are mostly citizens of Mexico. And the constitution of Mexico has no jurisdiction here in the United States.

Accordingly, the illegals are NOT entitled to Due Process of Law, only SUMMARY JUSTICE!

The foregoing article is typical leftwing FALSEHOOD, trying to sell the idea that illegals are "law abiding immigrants."

But in fact, over twice as many people are killed each year by illegals in the United States than U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq!

Yet the illegals are unconstitutionally shown favoritism, by allowing them to disregard our laws.

Is it constitutional to allow Mexicans here illegally to not pay taxes, not drive a car with insurance, etc., etc., while expecting that of everyone else? Of course NOT!

Is it fair to deport Haitians and Cubans who enter our country illegally, but not Mexicans? NO!

Since the illegals are not constitutionally entitled to Due Process, only SUMMARY JUSTICE, what's to stop the FBI or ICE from rounding them up by the thousands, taking them before a U.S. magistrate to obtain a deportation order, upon showing that the person is here illegally, and FINE them, FORCE-work them to pay off the fines ...THEN deport them back to Mexico in barred-window buses.

Once word travels that thousands of illegals are being rounded up and force-worked to pay off stiff fines, and afterwards deported, you can bet that you will see a mass exodus of millions of illegals heading back to Mexico.

For low wages in Mexico is a whole lot better than NO wages in the U.S.

The people of the United States are being sold out by their very own politicians, who are TRAITORS to their country.

And the leftwing media is abetting them.

"Our" representatives are not representing the over 90 percent of those here legally who oppose allowing illegals here disregarding our laws.

If the government allows illegals to disregard our laws, then, to be fair to everyone else, it should likewise expect NO ONE to obey our laws.

So that we have anarchy.

But if we do not want anarchy, then our laws must be enforced UNIFORMLY.

I strongly encourage everyone who is fed up, as I am, with this to phone or write your representatives, demanding that they pass a law clarifying that the illegals are NOT ENTITLED TO DUE PRICESS OF LAW, only SUMMARY JUSTICE.

So that the ACLU and no one else, not even the illegals themselves, will have standing to file a lawsuit on behalf of the illegals.

This madness has gone on long enough! And it is time to put an end to it.

Posted by: tncdel | November 15, 2007 2:44 PM | Report abuse

What is the purpose of a law that isn't enforced? It defeats the very purpose of having a law. Sure we may not like some laws, but we follow them - that's what makes us a society.

Regardless of the law, they all should be followed. If you don't like the law, fight to get it changed. The idea that a little breaking the law is OK is foolish.

If the guy who disagrees, must be the guy who thinks that a little bit of child p0rn is OK, too.

This article undermines the very rule of law in the name of politics...We should be against Illegal anything until through activism it is legal...

They attempt to try to make us look like Hypocrits. They love to quote the Gift from France-That Statue, as well.

Both are from a Time when we did not already have 300,000,000 living here, and there was still a Great Nation to build!

There are severl ways to stop the mass migration of Criminals Migrants into the United States. ONE, Pass a law that will forever bar citizenship to anyone that enters into this country illegaly. TWO, Make Social Security payable only to Citizens of the United States. THREE seize all assets of ILLEGAl MIGRANTS including all money sent to foriegn countires as contriband, as they are stealing money from the U. S. FOUR, for each illegal migrant that crosses the border, tax Mexico imports into the U.S.

The whole problem stems from Poloticians that will not do their jobs. So, We the People, the Government of the United States need to start petitions in each State that will force State Governments to Amend the Constitution to force out Corrupt Politicians that will not enforce the laws. Set TERM LIMITS (twelve years) on Congress (Seantor Byrd Virgina 49 years in Congress) and pay them a graituity instead of a retirement Pay. We must reclaim our Nation from Professional Politicains

FYI- An Illegal working for $10 / Hour, TAKES HOME $10 / Hour!

Without even Overtime, a 50 Hour / Week is $500-TAKE HOME! OVER $2,000 a MONTH!

Now, consider the Anchor Baby's Benefits because it's Mammacita is earning Sooooo Little, and Papa is "Unemployed"-with NO INCOME REPORTED(Or any Taxes CONTRIBUTED) being the Maximum allowed,

And the Invaders are hardly suffering as bad as the Americans they are STEALING FROM!

See, even IF the American was willing to work for the SAME $10 / Hour, the Employer would have to Payroll the American, and pay costs associated with Employment-COSTS THAT SHOULD BE GETTING COLLECTED! COSTS that add up to HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS A YEAR!

THEN, the VICTIMIZED American, who's wages have been decimated in this horrendous scenario, only Takes HOME-$7.50 / HOUR!

Baby? What Baby for the American? What Woman in her right MIND, would want to have a Baby with a Loser who Takes Home $ 7.50 an Hour?

Only an Illegally Invading Woman wanting an Anchor would even consider such a thing!

Of course, free Medical Costs for the Birth, and SCHIPs support for the Young Life of said Anchor do help!

What a choice, WE have a neo-Con(federacy) that adopts the principles of Jefferson Davis. Cheap labor for agri-bu siness, proported adherance to Adam Smith and free trade, and abject obsequetious pandering to international plutocrats in Beijing, and the hacienda crowd below the RIO Grande. Aaron Burr would be proud of the RNC. Especially with their endorsement of NAFTA, CAFTA and GATT. Just as in Medieval Europe we had the contentions of the upper, elite estates of Bishops and Barons, Popes, Kings the wealthy Banking and merchant families (like the Fugers), we have the elite aritocreats in America trying to re-colonize America. Like the Torries in the American revolution or the followers of Genet in the time of John Adams, we have those who wish to make America a subservient fief of foreign despots. The Democrats are another elite estate of feudal bureaucrats, re-introducing serfdom for the citizens of our republic, by appealing to the mass of voting illegal aliens. Look at Gov. Spitzer and Senator Clinton's plan for motor-voter plan to grant licenses and voting cards for illegal aliens. A Hispanic Tammany Hall. With Kyoto( of which their major campaign donor, Communist China is exempt) and the Law of the Sea Treaty and other UN resolutions, we would be the proletariat of the UN Politburo.
Republicans want illegal aliens for cheap labor for the plutocrats while Democrats want illegal aliens for their politcal machines and the bureaucrats. It is about power not patriotism. It is for control not the Constitution, an elitist, aristocratic War of the Roses with no regard for our republic. Bring in the Goths to determine who will be emperor in the name of SPQR. What is wrong with a politician who moves toward a popular position? Even in 2006 not a lot of people were talking about illegal immigration. However, by 2007, polls indicated that nationally about 70% of Americans 1. Wanted a border fence built AND 2. Felt illegal immigration was a bigger concern to them than Iraq.

Someone who ignores such facts and stubbornly sticks to their own position has a name: George Bush. Romney BETTER "harden" his approach to illegal immigration in light of the growing public sentiment against it. That is not flip flopping its called LISTENING TO THE CONSTITUENCY.

I don't see anything wrong with Romney agreeing with immigration reform. After all, thats not quite the same as allowing illegal immigration. All politicians at least tweak their views over time, if not completely alter them. If we disallow politicians from following the popular will, then we will stop this country from having representatives that represent the people. When he changed his views, it was to represent the people, which has nothing wrong with it.

He's following the situation in Loredo, Tx. where 70 hispanics, legal citizens, have been kidnaped by Mexicans. Where is the coverage by other media members. Neither the Republicans or Democrats seem interested in the injustice and the illegal actions taking place at the boarder. We need to really find out why and the People of the United states need to take action to weed out crooked or timid leaders who are turning deaf ears to what Americans are requesting them to research and correct. America and it's legal system seems to be broken and we need to take actions to fix them.

Romney, Barrack Hussein Obama and Hillary Clinton CANNOT beat Mike Huckabee. He can run oratory circles around the three of these creeps. Huckabee is a prolific debater. He is 'Reaganesque' in style: a great communicator, iconic optimist, and a strong former governor. He will draw away more moderate and conservative dems from the democratic ticket than Reagan ever dreamed about. Huckabee is also a 'Licolnesque' figure: frugal beginnings, a great visionary, and a moral godly man who stands on his convictions, even though he was told (like Lincoln) he could not win. HRC and Barrack Hussein Obama will say anything to get elected. When are you dems going to realize that in order to win the presidency you need a conservative in your party to run for the nomination, other wise you write off the south every time - and w/o the south you have never won the presidency. Huckabee is gaining so rapidly, has the momentum, and will be the GOP nominee. Better luck eight years from now Dems!

Illegal immigation will never be stopped. Whites will soon be the minority and I am wondering if they will take care of Whites and their medical problems and so forth and accept the lawbreaking of Whites as is being done now. No, they talk about how they do the jobs others won't do, but when they become the majority they will rule with an iron fist. Just like Mexico does now where they treat Columbians brutally who come in to their country illegally. All other countries want to maintain order in immigration. But the US is expected by other countries to be a free for all country to be abused without question. Hispanics are the biggest hypocries on the planet and if anyone is racist it is them. Our laws mean nothing to them and would people please stop using the phrase "Comprehensive immigration reform"? There is no such thing. No one wants that. No one will accept anything comprehesive. #2. Every election cycle the Right creates some Shikigami to scare their side into showing up at the polls and Oh, while your there vote for our candidate. All fear the specter of gay, married, illegal alien terrorists. And after the election is over, the illegals will still be here and the politicians will do nothing. Wake up Rednecks! You're being used!
