Romney and lobbyists
Romney says that one reason that he is like Ronald Reagan is that he does not have "lobbyists at every elbow." Well, he has two elbows, and two prominent lobbyists occupying key positions in his campaign. Perhaps the most prominent example of an uber-lobbyist turned Romney adviser is Ronald C. Romney and Russia
Romney says that Russia is trying to use its huge energy reserves "to take over the world." That is a huge hyperbole. Even under Vladimir Putin, Russian foreign policy is far less aggressive and expansionist than during the Communist period when the Soviet Union was ideological enemy number one for the United States. It is quite plausible that Putin is attempting to reassert Russian control over neighboring states in central Asia and eastern Europe--but it is ridiculous to claim that Russia wants to take over the world in the way the Communists once dreamed of doing.
9:14 p.m.
Romney gives McCain "Pinocchios"
McCain and Romney have returned to their argument over whether Romney favored setting a date for withdrawal from Iraq. To some extent, this is an argument over semantics. Romney has never proposed setting a specific date for withdrawal from Iraq. He has talked about establishing timetables for the Iraqi government to follow. McCain argues that "timetables" is a buzz word for "withdrawal," but that is a stretch. That said, there is no doubt that McCain has been more consistent than Romney on the issue. Evidently, Romney reads the Fact Checker. He told the nationwide television audience that the Washington Post gave McCain "three Pinocchios" for distorting his statement on Iraq.
9:12 p.m.
Romney and Iraq
Romney, in defending President Bush, said that the president "was hit by something that took his agenda completely off course. That was the Iraq conflict, and 9/11." No one would argue that the September 11, 2001 attacks were a shock that changed the nation's agenda. But invading Iraq was a war of choice by the Bush administration. Iraq did not attack the United States, but the president argued it was necessay to invade in 2003 because Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. No such weapons were ever found-- and Iraq continues to drag down the Bush agenda.

McCain and Tax Cuts
John McCain sidesteps a question about the reason why he opposed President Bush's tax cut plan. He has been saying on the campaign trail that he opposed the tax cut plan because it did not include restraints on spending, in addition to the tax cuts. During the Senate debate on the 2001 tax cuts, however, he said that he could not support "a tax cut in which so many of the benefits go to the most fortunate among us, at the expense of middle class Americans who most need tax relief." Restraints on spending were not at the top of his list of stated priorities in 2001 when he opposed the tax cuts.

Huckabee and that Heritage Tax Study
Gov. Huckabee, arguing for his plan to build roads as a way to stimulate the economy, cited a Heritage Foundation report as saying that tax rebates did not work. The study, "Why Tax Rate Reductions Are More Stimulative Than Rebates: Lessons from 2001 and 2003," by Brian M. Riedl, did make the case that President Bush's rebates in 2001 were ineffective. "The simple redistribution from investment to consumption did not create new wealth," Riedl wrote. "All traces of the rebate policy effectively disappeared by the next quarter . . . The 2001 tax cuts, based more on demand-side tax rebates and redistribution, did not significantly increase economic growth." But the study did not say that a big building project would be the solution. Instead, it argued for something along the lines of Bush's 2003 tax cut, which it said lowered income, capital gains, and dividend tax rates.

Roads to nowhere
Mike Huckabee is again talking about a huge road project as a way to stimulate the economy. Last week,he said it should be built from Bangor to Miami. This week, in California, he said (jokingly, I think) that it should be built on the west coast. Romney challenged him, saying that it takes a long time for such infrastructure projects to produce economic benefits. Romney is probably correct on this one, at least in terms of avoiding a near-term recession. By the time Huckabee's superhighway got off the ground, the U.S. would be much deeper into recession.

More on taxes in Massachusetts
There is disagreement between Romney and McCain on increased fees in Massachusetts while Romney was governor. According to McCain, the figure is $730 million. He appears to have gotten this figure from the Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, an independent group that monitors state expenditures. According to Romney, the figure is $240 million or so, which is more in line with the State Department of Administration estimate. In addition to raising fees, Romney also plugged loopholes in corporate taxes, raising another $174 million a year.

Romney and taxes
Asked whether Americans are better off now than they were when President Bush came to office, Mitt Romney launched into a defense of his own record as governor of Massachusetts. His claim that he did not raise taxes has been challenged by other candidates, including John McCain. The question boils down to how you define taxes. Romney raised various fees while governor of Massachusetts. Romney did impose additional taxes on corporations. He also increased various state fees and license payments. Total tax revenues rose by about 32 percent in Massachusetts while Romney was governor, or eight percent when adjusted for inflation. (Romney claims that he was merely closing tax loopholes.)

With just six days to go to Super Tuesday, it promises to be an exciting affair, with Mitt Romney doing his best to dislodge John McCain from the role of Republican front-runner.
After Rudy Giuliani's withdrawal from the race, there will be just four candidates on stage: McCain, Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Ron Paul. All four will be vying for the mantle of the Gipper. Anyone want to guess who mentions Reagan the most?
We will fact check whatever we can during the debate itself. If a statement is too difficult to fact check immediately, we will take note of it, and take another look at it tomorrow. Who with a clean concience can vote for McCain after tonights debacle of lies, distortions and evasive answers?
Ronald Reagan must be turning in his grave to see liberal John McCain desperately paint himself a Reagan conservative- despite his record to the contrary. Integrity? Reagan had integrity. What you saw in tonights debates was McCain - the 'straight talker' dodging questions (would you vote for your amnesty bill?) and blatantly lying about Romney's position on Iraq timetables -even though the truth was known by everyone else in America. That lie may have cost Romney the Florida primary. How Clintonesque!
Romney has integrity. Romney has a proven record of success. Many true Republican conservatives love Romney, and so would have Ronald Reagan. He message is often distorted by the liberal press and he is hated by his competition. If you were good looking, rich, smart, and above all RIGHT, don't you think your competition would be just a bit jealous? How Reaganesque!

For those who want to know how much Romney raised TAXES, as opposed to fee's, there was a report in the Massachusetts media from the "Patriot Ledger" in Quincy (link below). They wrote: "Romney's claim that he balanced the state budget ''without raising taxes'' needs plenty of caveats. Romney and his revenue chief, Alan LeBovidge, presided over a steady series of what they referred to as measures to close ''tax loopholes'' for companies."
"The tax changes, enacted over three years, provided a total of $377 million in extra revenue annually to help balance the state's budget, according to the state Department of Revenue. Of that figure, corporate taxes rose by some $228 million a year, and many of the other tax changes - such as a sales tax on downloaded software - affect businesses as well."
However THAT'S NOT ALL - the Democratic legislature forced Romney to cut his 3rd round of proposed tax increases in half: "The Democrats who run the state Legislature went along with the first two rounds. But they started to balk when Round 3 arrived in 2005 amid protests from some of the state's leading business groups, forcing the Romney administration to cut the proposed tax changes in half that year."

I wish the media would stop overhyping McCain and Obama. There are millions of voters who form their opinion based on what's presented in the media. If they think McCain is the presumptive nominee and believe the media's reports of his agenda, they are being manipulated. The WaPost attacked Allen daily so Webb could win in 06.
Romney is the clear choice for the GOP (and America), but the media will never give him a fair treatment.
The media is overhyping Obama, who's "bigger than Jesus" now. The only good thing is that the NY Times and WaPost have declining readers and revenue.

Romney & Huckabee have a religious lode-stone around their necks. McCain is correct: troop withdrawal inevitability was in the air back then which Romney was dancing around...I remember feeling ill that everyone was essentially playing it coy about giving up...hedging and playing it safe. McCain was the only one clearly not on point with the majority opinion...not so Romney. McCain has both feet on the ground and will win...to choose Romney is shooting ourselves in the foot.

McCain has many old republican establishment politician endorsements -
These people obviously wouldn't want a Washington outsider who doesn't owe them any favors to stir things up in Washington. They want someone who will do more of the same and try to make them all happy.
Every time McCain starts naming off his Washington friends who are voting for him, I feel more inclined to vote for someone who is not intertwined in all these politicians.
Let's show Washington that we want someone in office who will work for "we the people" and not for them "the politicians"! Mitt '08

Hard to take the Washington Post and Michael Dobbs seriously when he focuses his "facts" on Romney and not McCain. Why? How come the media keeps attacking Romney as a "flip-flopper" but not McCain???
On illegal immigration, McCain co-authored the Amnesty bill and then refutes it.....aaahhh the old switcherooo....further, McCain has big endorsements from Amnesty-loving Univision and Open-borders advocate Dr. Juan Hernandez.
We all know that the WashPost editorial has favored Amnesty and likes to blur the illegal immigration problem as simply an immigration issue but can you try at least to report fairly the facts.
Corporate Media will be the downfall of America.....sad.

Any vote for McCain or Romney is a vote for unending war. Continuing the war in Iraq will only further damage the economy because we are spending money we don't have. When will people actually get smart and realize that a true conservative saves more than he spends?

Please do a more thorough fact check or none at all. We don't need to hear what the candidate's spin is rather we need you to nail down what are the actual facts for all candidates regardless of how embarrassing they might be. If you only selectively choose what to evaluate then you are also becoming part of their spin machines.

McCain doesn't need fundraising. Media gives it to him free. McCain lies about Romney 3 days before Florida primary with willing accomplices in the press. So what hypocrisy to deny regular Americans the right to produce attack ads within 30 days of an election (McCain Feingold)! So much for free speech!
Senator McCain cannot win General Election any more than Senator Dole in 1996. Even though all early media polls during Primary Season showed Dole winning handily, Clinton CRUSHED Dole in the General. Wasn't pretty.
No difference between Hilary and McCain. Both voted for War in Iraq, and both later attacked Rumsfeld. McCain also voted against the Federal Marriage Protection Act to the U.S. Constitution, was one of only two Republicans who voted against Bush tax cuts (now he is for them!), and wants constitutional rights and trials given to unlawful enemy combatants! This man wouldn't know a strict constructionist judge from a terrorist!

Should Governor Mike Huckbee continue or simply melt into the faceless sea of Senator McCain's real and potential (Mitt Romney's delegates) delegates? Why don't you ask why should Sen.Hillary Clinton not capitulate now since Sen.Obama has virtually gathered enough delegates to clinch the democratic nomination? Friends this is not Cuba. In the same way that Sen.Clinton is still fighting an uphill struggle to get nominated so should Gov.Mike Huckbee be given a chance to continue the struggle for the Republican nomination. If not actually getting it, at least playing the role of the King maker. Go on Mike! Go on Hillary! That is what American democracy is all about.
