Clinton Corrects the Record

By Michael Dobbs

Campaigning at the University of Pittsburgh, March 25, 2008

"I did misspeak the other day. This has been a very long campaign. Occasionally, I am a human being like everybody else....I have written about it in my book and talked about it on many other occasions and last week, you know, for the first time in 12 or so years I misspoke."
--Hillary Clinton, Interview with KDKA Pittsburgh radio, March 25, 2008.

Hillary Clinton has finally admitted that she "misspoke" when claiming that she came "under sniper fire" in Bosnia during a March 1996 visit to U.S. troops enforcing the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement. At first, the Clinton campaign maintained that the "mistatement" was limited to one occasion on March 17 when she talked about running across the tarmac "with our heads down." In an interview yesterday with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the New York Senator attributed the mistake to her "sleep-deprived" condition.

A review of the record shows that she provided embellished stories of her visit to Bosnia on at least two previous occasions, while campaigning in Iowa in December and Texas in February. By the end of the day, Clinton was making a joke of her ordeal: "I made a mistake. That happens. It proves I'm human which, you know, for some people, is a revelation."

The Facts

While Bosnia may have still been considered a "potential" war zone in March 1996, there were no open hostilities. NATO troops were patrolling the area in force, engaged in tasks such as mine clearing and blowing up old ammunition dumps. According to Adrian Pandurevic, a reporter with Associated Press TV, recalled that "there were no armed groups roaming Bosnia, or any significant threat. The former frontlines had been bulldozed." He described claims of "sniper fire" in and around the Tuzla base as "simply ridiculous."

Rick Atkinson, a longtime military correspondent for The Post and author of two highly regarded books on World War II, was also in the Tuzla region around the time of Clinton's visit, reporting on the activities of the 1st Armored Division. He remembers hiring a rental car and roaming by himself over back roads between the air base and the city. He said in an e-mail that "the only danger was from mines, and those had all been removed from the air base area," and from plane crashes caused by bad weather conditions, of the kind that killed Commerce Secretary Ron Brown near Dubrovnik in April 1996.

Atkinson recalled that the Tuzla story had "become so boring" by late March that the Washington Post had practically lost interest, and he was reassigned to a different part of Bosnia.

It is, of course, entirely plausible that the Secret Service was nervous about escorting the first lady into what had recently been a combat zone and insisted that she and her traveling companions wear flak jackets for the landing in Tuzla. It is also possible that Clinton heard reports about "snipers in the hills around the airstrip," as she recalled in her 2003 autobiography, Living History. But there is no evidence that she was "forced to cut short an event on the tarmac with local children" because of sniper activity.

On the campaign trail, Clinton began providing further embellishments on the Tuzla tale. In Dubuque, Iowa, on December 30, she said she was the first high-profile American to go to Bosnia after the signing of the peace agreement, overlooking President Clinton's trip to Tuzla in January 1996. "We landed in one of those corkscrew landings and ran out because they said there might be sniper fire. I don't remember anyone offering me tea on the tarmac there."

The reference to not being offered tea on the tarmac was evidently a riposte to a claim by Barack Obama, a few days earlier, that Clinton's eight years in the White House as first lady were a glorified "tea party."

A corkscrew landing is a technique used by military pilots to land in a war zone to limit the risk of being hit by ground fire. Instead of beginning its descent 20 miles from the runway, the plane arrives over the airport at a high altitude and then twists down in a tight spiral, like a corkscew. Other passengers on board the C-17 that brought Clinton from Ramstein Air Force Base remember a steeper than usual approach, but not a classic corkscrew landing.

Clinton repeated the sniper fire claim in a February 29 campaign rally in Waco, Texas. Contrasting her foreign policy experience with that of Obama, she mentioned her visit to Bosnia when a welcoming ceremony "had to be moved inside because of sniper fire."

Questioned about this speech yesterday while campaigning in Pennsylvania, said that she remembered being told by the military and the Secret Service that "we were going into a war zone...I was the first first lady taken into a war zone since Eleanor Roosevelt." But she added that she acknowledged that she had "made a mistake" in talking about her Tuzla experiences, both on March 17 "and recently." Pressed about her statement that she had only "misspoken" once in 12 years, she said she "was joking."

"Gosh, lighten up, guys," she told the reporters. "I say millions of words every week, and there's a lot more, you know, room for error when you're talking as much as I'm talking."

Clinton spokesman Phil Singer declined to answer questions about the incident.

The Pinocchio Test

In an effort to polish her foreign policy credentials, Clinton has been telling exaggerated stories about her April 1996 trip to Bosnia for many months. After a week of missteps, she has finally come up with a reasonable strategy for putting the story behind her: acknowledge her mistake and make a gracious joke about being "human." Since I have already awarded her a maximum four Pinocchios here, it seems churlish to add any more for her tall Tuzla tales.

Whining about Obama's connection to bonehead Wright's church sermons is like throwing out a painting by Picasso or Rembrandt because there's a microscopic flaw in the frame it's in.

Obama not only admitted very graciously that bonehead Wright's sermons have on occasion been highly offensive, he even made one of the greatest speeches on race ever made in this country in order to confront the question head-on and show his sincerity.

The Clintons have MORE lame excuses, lies, and gutter-level politics --- that's their answer to those who dare to question their 'mistakes'.

Clintons: get out NOW.

Actually there are now 4 documented cases where she told this fabrication. Hardly a one time sleepy minded misstatement. This story was a premeditated conscious effort to portray this incident as being more dangerous and more significant that it really was. This woman lacks integrity and trustworthiness. Not fit to be POTUS.

BBC had a major story last night slamming Hillary's credibility -- Bosnia sniper lie, Nortern Ireland lie, NAFTA lie, etc. They were totally mocking her. She is becoming a pathetic joke all around the world.

She needs another four Pinocchios because even her explanation was a pack of lies. She didn't misspeak, she lied. Over and over and over again. An honest apology was needed, not more prevarication.

In the BBC program last night, Lord Magillis, who was head of the Northern Ireland Good Friday Peace Accord practically laughs at the suggestion Hillary had anything to do with No. Ireland peace.

To indicate this is a misstatement is in itself a mistatement. The fact is that Hillary lied and she lied on a number of occassions. When we make errors sometimes they are positive, sometimes negative but Hillary only makes mistakes in her favour. No wonder the American people find her to be so untrustworthy. The way she has brought up Wright just shows her to be despicable and again reverting to gutter politics.

Campaign Clinton is in denial. Her attack dogs are destroying the Democractic Party all for the lust for more power. When you see their income tax they will have plenty money from selling out Americans to Arab interests just like they sold us out in NAFTA. Clinton put us on the road to third world wages and Hillary wants to keep us there. You can see why the uneducated vote for her because they are to blind with race hatred. They will believe anything. If you can decive people that their land is being invaded and the men to fight for their plantaion owners like our civil war, well what the Clintons are doing isn't a far strech. The super delegates are a bunch of cowards that are allowing them to screw the party.

Bravo !!!! to : David Brooks, conservative columnist who just now on 'Morning Joe'/MSNBC insisted the Clintons should stop NOW.

When Mika again suggested Obama's critics are still harping on bonehead Wright's sermons, Brooks AGAIN insisted the Clintons cannot possibly win.

He further submitted that the Clintons are possibly willing to damage the party because they mistakenly believe (...HIS words) that Obama cannot possibly win.

Clintons: get out NOW.

Most people simply don't like --- and don't TRUST --- Hillary. And now Bill had destroyed much of the good will he had, as well.

Most people like and trust Obama .

It's that simple.

The reason this story is so important is that it irrefutably confirms what many of us have believed about her for some time -- she lies and lies alot. She usually gets away with it but not this time. She was caught telling a huge bald-faced lie repeatedly and completely contradicted on video for the whole world to see. This woman is not fit to be POTUS.

If anyone is still in doubt about the true nature of Hillary's character, this says it all.

When she (or Bill) lies, it's simply an innocent "mistatement." When anyone else makes a verbal faux pas, it's death-by-firing-squad time!

Two different standards -- one for the rich and elite, one for everybody else.

If you have a few minutes,

PLEASE ( !! ) read Maureen Dowd's Wednesday column in today's NYT --

( ... by the way it looks like NYT might possibly have become aware of the real danger of ruthlessly slanting it's 'news' in favor of the Clintons --- they have at least very for the moment very suddenly stopped doing that)

Dowd clearly describes the now-pathological need the Clintons might very likely have to destroy Obama totally and completely, even though they KNOW she cannot win, so that she can have another chance in 2012.

THAT'S the kind of sick, twisted, obscene ruthlessness we are seeing from the lying clintons. I for one believe it is very possible that's what they're doing.

Request to someone in the media - Please ask Mrs. Clinton - if it wasn't this time in Bosnia, at what time was she really running for her life from sniper fire? She may have gotten the time and location confused with some other time, but I believe her if she says she was surrounded by gunfire at some point in her life. You just don't make this stuff up unless you are Tom Clancy.

The media is not doing there job by allowing her to just say that she "misspoke".

Protected by sharpshooters, Hillary Rodham Clinton swooped into a military zone by Black Hawk helicopter Monday to deliver a personal "thank you, thank you, thank you" to U.S. troops.
...
But this was a day of celebration and celebrities - a day for the U.S. troops helping to uphold the Bosnian peace accord. Mrs. Clinton hosted a USO show with comedian Sinbad and singer Sheryl Crow and briefly addressed the gathering.
...
But the highlight of her trip were visits to two fortified posts outside the U.S. base in Tuzla. Even President Clinton, restricted to the base by bad weather in January, did not see as much of this war-wracked region as Mrs. Clinton did Monday.
...
Riflemen rushed to the brush line as the helicopter landed and surrounded her as she walked into the post. Located in a "separation zone," the U.S. outpost nestles between two tree lines. Just months ago, one was Serbian territory, the other Bosnian.

Security was tight - fighter jets accompanied her C-17 cargo plane to Tuzla - but officials said the first lady took no extraordinary risks on the trip.

Don't you people have a Lexus account? Here is more.Contemporaneous news accounts confirm that Hillary's trip to Bosnia was a dangerous situation:

Hillary's trip to Bosnia marked the first time since Eleanor Roosevelt that a first lady traveled to a potential combat zone. Accompanied by singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow and comedian Sinbad, Mrs. Clinton traveled to this northwestern Bosnian town on a morale-boosting tour for the 18,500 U.S. troops participating in the NATO-led peacemaking operation. She heard a poem of peace from a Bosnian girl and praised U.S. troops for 'showing what American leadership is.'...This trip to Bosnia marks the first time since Roosevelt that a first lady has voyaged to a potential combat zone. During World War II, Roosevelt toured the devastated streets of London and the southwestern Pacific, bringing cheer to U.S. troops. [Washington Post, 3/26/96]

Hillary was 'protected by sharpshooters' in a 'military zone' when she visited troops in Bosnia. "Protected by sharpshooters, Hillary Rodham Clinton swooped into a military zone by Black Hawk helicopter Monday to deliver a personal 'thank you, thank you, thank you' to U.S. troops. 'They're making a difference,' the first lady said of the 18,500 Americans working as peacekeepers in Bosnia. Mrs. Clinton became the first presidential spouse since Eleanor Roosevelt to make such an extensive trip into what can be considered a hostile area, though others have visited hot spots..." Ok -- so, let me get this straight ;

Obama might stuble or screw up some how so we (the Clintons) should throw knives, baseball bats and rocks at him in the meantime, in case he stumbles ???????

That's their rationale for reminding people at every opportunity that he is 'African-American' ?? (Which he is not, he is half a-a and half caucasian)

That's their rationale for lying repeatedly and accusing Obama and his campaign of the very gutter-politics that they (the clintons) are using to destroy Obama in case he screws up ?

that's how the Clintons are going to bring people together?

Do they believe that people are that stupid?

Do they think people are going to forget how miserable and unforgettably dirty their tactics have been?

Are people going to forget that within hours of their victory in New Hampshire, there she was, reminding everyone that MLK would never have succeeded without LBJ's help?

Does ANY thinking adult believe she didn't know exactly how she was stirring up the latent racism which may very possibly have been the reason for the discrepency between the polls the day before NH (secret votes, not publicly declared caucuses) --- and the voter turnout afterward ?

... and many many many other examples of dirty politics from the Clintons too numerous to list here...

President Bill so hated his wife and teenage daughter that he sent them into war torn Bosnia with the understanding that they would be under sniper fire. Now if the voters of Pennsylvania believe that story then they certainly deserve what they get if they vote for Hillary.

At best the Clintons are a disfunctional family (and that includes the $200,000 a year over paid 28 year old daughter) who are in great need of therapy. We certainly don't need them to bring their mental illness and sense of entitlement back to the White House.

This statement by Clinton accepts no responsibility for the untruths she incorporated as a central part of her argument for why she has more experience in foreign affairs. She says she 'misspoke'-- which makes it seem as if her claims were accidental rather than deliberate.

"That happens" -- what, the lying? "That happens" makes it sound like her words were the result of some impersonal outside force.

"It proves I'm human"-- yes because using calculating lies to bolster your own thin record, and then insinuations to slime your opponent's are in fact all too human.

MISSPOKE....

Just like OBAMA misspoke when he hadn't heard any controversial comments at his racist, separatist, american hating church....and then two days later he said he DID hear controversial comments.

At least with Senator Clinton you can excuse it because it was over 12 years ago. Obamas was only two days old.

So Obama should be the last one throwing stones.

Obama is also the one who has exaggerated his work on legislative bills and has exaggerated in his book....as his own characters have attested.

Obama claimed credit for a nuclear bill that was NEVER passed

Obama claimed credit for an immigration bill when in reality he wasn't that involved.

Obama claimed that he hadn't heard any controversial statements at his racist. hatred, anti-american church....and then two days later he said that HE DID hear controversial statements.

So if the best thing you can throw at Senator Clinton is that she made a mistake regarding Bosnia......then you need to focus on ALL the misspeak or lies that Senator Obama has said through out the campaign.

There are so many more Obama misspeak/lies if you want them I will be more than happy to list them for you!

Obama is not what America needs....we cannot trust him with America

Clinton exaggerates and it becomes a huge story even though news clips at the time called the area dangerous and this article acknowledges that she had to wear a flak jacket and was probably cautioned by the Secret Service.
Obama, on the other hand, tells outright lies, and the press ignores it.
Obama has been deceptive throughout the campaign about his associations with Rev. Wright and Tony Rezko. He repeatedly denied that Wright was controversial, yet he cancelled Wright's appearance at the ceremony announcing his run for the presidency. Then he said he never heard Wright's controversial statements, only to finally admit he had.
With Rezko, he described him as someone active in Chicago politics, when he was actually a friend who had contributed generously to his campaigns, held fund-raisers for him, and helped him buy a house (by purchasing the lot next door that had to go to settlement the same day as the house).
He "embellished" his record in the Senate, according to an article in the Post this week, and was even admonished for trying to take credit for legislation he had hardly worked on.
Why isn't this pattern of lies worse than Clinton's exaggeration? Oh, I forgot -- the media favors Obama and dislikes Clinton.

Only Hillary and her campaign adviser goofballs could take a campaign that gaining steam and which looked like it might actually run ahead of Obama and torpedo it. Ready on day one, no.

One last remark. If she can't help but lie and misspeak because the long campaign has made her too tired to think straight, how can she claim she'll be ready at 3 a.m. to handle a crisis???

Most people simply don't like --- and don't TRUST --- Hillary. And now Bill had destroyed much of the good will he had, as well.
Most people like and trust Obama .
It's that simple.

---------------

I really do wish it was that simple. Unfortunately an awful lot of the people who are supporting Hillary are saying that if she loses, they will vote for McCain.

Those people need to take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror. What they will see there is either a bigot, a traitor to their country, or both.

I despise HRC, but if she somehow steals the nomination I will vote for her (but I'll take a shower after to clean off the stench). I love my country more than I despise Hillary and I don't think this country can survive another four years of Republican rule.

You are a liar, along with Hillary. It's no wonder you support her. Barak Obama has been very forthcoming about both Reverend Wright and Rezko. He gave a very long interview to the Chicago times about his association with Rezko. Read it, you might educate yourself. He also did say that he never heard Reverend Wright's controversial statements. He said that he really did hear Wright say the things that were plastered all over the media. What he said is that he had heard the Reverend say some controversial things he disagreed with. You are rather lacking in critical thinking skills if you can project that to his admitting he had heard Wright say the things he was being criticized for saying.

Are you one of the Hillarybots who are going to vote for McCain if Hillary loses? If so, take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror. You will see a bigot and a traitor looking back at you.

I'm praying the rumors re: Sen. Reid of Navada are true;

He reportedly told a questioner yesterday that 'things are being done' to end the Clintons' efforts to destroy Obama and ruin the Democratic Party...

What bothers me most of all about the Clintons is that they are much smarter than most of the people who support them at this point (--- most of the smarter, more open-minded people (who don't 'owe' the Clintons a favor) have wisely gone to Obama)

So, the Clintons know very well how they are ruthlessly USING people not smart enough to pick apart their race-baiting, offensive, insulting statements.

This is so much more than a "misstatement". It's not like she was under sniper fire 8 times and got confused about this time. This is a calculated lie.

It's also an insult to those who have come under sniper fire.

And then she tosses it off: "Hey, I say a lot of things. Are ALL of them supposed to true?? Ha ha."

Again and again Hillary regards "Truth" as just another option to be selected if, and only if, it serves her purpose.
And when she is caught in a lie, she has the pomposity to laugh at us.

I've been working in Washington for years, first in the Pentagon and now for another agency. "I misspoke" is Washington talk for "I lied and you caught me." Substitute that translation the next time one of our fine politicos utters that phrase "I misspoke." and you will see it is a perfect fit. We laugh in our office every time one of the senior knuckleheads uses that phrase.

Mispeaking and lying are two different words. I would believe that she mispoke if she did it only once and in an conversation format. But she did it three times and two of them she was reading from prepared remarks so that's not mispeaking. That's overstating, enhancing the facts or in other words, lying. Period.

Last I checked it wasn't Obama who shed light oh Hillarity's lies. That would be the reporters, numerous newscameras, entertainers, greeters, etc, etc. that were at that airbase.

When you puff yourself up with ficticious "experiences" and put them front and center as part of your campaign again and again, you set yourself up. It doesn't take any help.

But going on an elaborate made-up story about sniper fire and threat of life and limb when it was absolutely not true is not mis-speaking.

It's an absolute lie.

We have now seen everything possible from Hillary during this campaign. She has tried to CHEAT her way into Florida and Michigan delegates, she has resorted to NAME-CALLING against her opponent, she has PLAYED THE RACE CARD and now, she has flat-out LIED.

That's the Clinton way.

The perfect Obama campaign commercial for the upcoming primary states:

1) What Hillary Claims - video of "I had to run from a possible sniper attack"
2) What Actually Happened - video of little girl handing Hillary flower with Chelsea at her side
3) Her excuse for "Misspeaking" at least 4 times - video "I was sleep deprived"
4) Close up of Hillary - "Is this who you want answering the phone at 3 a.m.?"

Can't think of anything that would quickly get the point across better with a minimum of verbiage.

Your softball handling of Hillary is the reason that the traditional press is falling out of favor. Can you look-up the word "misspoke"? Hillary did not misspeak, she lied. For the brainless who work at Washington Post here's the English word lesson of the day: Misspoke, accidently using the wrong word: as in John McCain use of the word "Iran" when he means to say "Iraq." When told of the error, immediately corrects himself. Lie: Knowingly telling a false story, with great detail. Continuing to tell a false story and embelishing it each time told. Then arguing that you are telling the truth when others contradict the story.

To be a credible newspaper, the Washington Post has got to stop diversity hirings and begin hiring people who have IQ's at least in the mid-80s.

Misspoke or lied? Sounds like another example of "what is is." The big question is, Why do people lie about things that are easily proven to be false? It's quite reckless, isn't it? We have been living under the Bush regime of falsehoods that has us mired in yet another quagmire of a war. Do we need another 4 years of pathological Clinton lying? McCain is not much better. So far, Obama has not lied about anything. In fact Obama comes right up front and addresses controversary in a manner we haven't seen in our recent presidents.

I remember in the 1980's when Duke Tully, publisher of the Arizona Republic and good friend and supporter of John McCain, collapsed under a pile of lies. Tully had been rejected by the Air Force, but loved planes, so he joined the Civil Air Patrol. I think that's when he started "reinventing" himself. He eventually invented a heroic war record and convinced everyone that he had flown more than 100 missions in Vietnam, and had been awarded a number of military decorations including the Purple Heart and Flying Cross. It was all fiction!

As lies do, eventually everything came out into the open and he resigned as publisher. His own paper printed his verbatim remarks: "It just built and built, and suddenly I was under an avalanche and could not get out of it. As you move up the ladder, it just snowballed and got away from me."

I Misspoke

It was a treacherous night landing. Ice had formed on both of our wings, and as I looked out the port window, I could see it breaking into shards, flying off into the night sky with each near barrel roll of our C-50, highlighted by the flares shooting past on either side of the cabin, turning them into falling prisms of wildly careening light.

As the cabin lurched back and forth and the sounds of rocket fire percussed the urgent, faltering rhythm of our right engine, I unfastened my seat belt, and, finding my center of gravity, rose from my seat, moving past aides frozen stock still in their chairs, arms locked like girders against their arm rests in terror, and walked up the center aisle to the pilot's cabin.

"How long to Kosovo"? I shouted over the screaming whine of the altimeter's alarm, marking our steep descent. The pilot turned, looked at me in shocked recognition--"How...how did you make it up here? No one has ever walked up here in these conditions before! How..."

"Never mind that!" I barked, with what I hoped was a not too stern forcefulness, combined with sufficient steel and empathy to create the appearance of a firm imperturbability. "Check the master FMC! Is it working or has it failed?"

The pilot, paused, as if in amazement at my readiness, and then himself awakening to crisis, looked to the Control Display Unit . "It's down! It's down!" he shouted. A bead of sweat began to form on his brow.

I knew what I had to do. "Get out of there!" I commanded, and pulled him from the seat, from where he crumbled to a fetal position on the floor behind me. Stepping over him, I took the chair behind the console.

"Check the Central Maintenance Computers and activate the NAV RAD for alternate radio tuning capability!" I shouted to the co-pilot. He, too, had broken down in tears, his head buried in his hands. I looked to his ID on the console. Another newbie.

Well, this was another one where I would have to go it alone.

Quickly, I tore the scarf from my neck and fashioned it into a crude lasso that could be used for EFIS/EICIS control. Catching the lever with my right hand, I activated the cabin loudspeaker with my left. I knew that the passengers had likely been gulled by the earlier soft patter of the pilot. "Brace yourself! Get ready! These aren't just words!" Then I pulled the lever back hard, sending us rocketing towards the runway.

"You'll never make it!" I knew that voice, and turned. Richardson! How did he trundle up to the cabin? "Out of here, Judas! And take that quivering beard with you!"

I could feel bolts straining against Pennsylvania steel as I pushed the '50 down, down, down to the ground below us. Suddenly, an explosion punctuated the sky--Hand held rocket fire at 3' o'clock!

I quickly performed the evasive maneuvers that I had learned for so long, and so well. My face became angry, then sad, then gentle, then intensely serious, then was finally rocked by a powerful squealing, an unnatural burst of laughter. That did it! The rocket exploded harmlessly behind us.

Now. Now it was time to take the stick and bring this shaking, careening flight, parts straining against themselves until nearly ready to burst, down to the ground. I put my arms to the twin arms of the FO-AP, set the APC, and with all of the strength remaining in me, began to push the levers down. Straining, I pushed harder. And harder. I could see the runway rising before us in the glare shield. I would have to find the remaining strength to bring it down.

Finally, as if a burst of superhuman might had been somehow delegated to me, I pushed the levers into locked position. I could hear Penn in the cabin shouting "We're landing...We're going down!" as I felt the rough shock of the landing gear snapping into place.

Sparks flew as we hit the runway, bullets ricocheting off of the cabin, one wheel touching pavement. I looked straight through the windshield--the militia, arms at the ready stood at the runway's end. The last obstacle.

I turned the craft hard, sending it hurtling sideways across the pavement. It swept the militia away in a single screaming motion that combined with the screaming that arose from the cabin, as we continued to move towards the small, makeshift terminal, where the dignitaries, negotiators, and heads of state awaited for my arrival.

I did not close my eyes. I did not let go of the wheel. I watched--as we ground to a halt just before the doors of the terminal.

I looked fore, at the dignitaries protecting themselves from the sniper fire that raged around them. I looked aft, at the passengers, shaken but safe.

We had arrived. All was good.

Just a moment...

Due to the discovery of a video of the above described occasion, I would like to make few small corrections. The flight was in fact actually a regularly scheduled chartered flight that was actually flown by the pilot and co-pilot--although the pilot did have a cold, and during the flight, I did at several times give serious attention to our flight conditions (notes indicate that I found it "a bit bumpy"). I would also note that the dinner, Salmon with Creamed Potatoes, was undercooked, and was served with a Riesling that was unusually dry. It is also true that we were met not by a militia, but by a girl's youth soccer team. However, it was necessary for me to dodge a soccer ball as team members demonstrated their often aggressive skills. No other shots were fired.

In short: I misspoke."

Does America really want someone prone to hallucinations in the WH? Reviewing Hillary's methodical playing of the "Race card", and "The Perpetual Victim" against Obama; her inability to control her own campaign finances; and, her recent commentary on: Iraq; Pakistan; Energy Policy; her stated intention to confiscate the profits of American energy companies; the need for her to control the 14 Trillion $ American Economy from her White House Politburo, since she has declared the free-market to be a failure (this from a woman who hasn't managed so much as a corner vegetable stand, or for that matter her own marriage; but, of course you could count Whitewater, and her tenure as "Madam" and Bimbo Containment Chief for Bill's White House Brothel); her Marxist statement in San Francisco: "We're going to have to take more from you, and give it to others for the common good."; Illegal Immigration; Taxes; Infanticide; Massive new Government spending; Multi million $ Senate earmarks for supporters of Hillary's Presidential campaign; Garnishing of your wages to fund her coveted Socialized medicine program; a fanatical advocate of confiscating all civilian handguns; and, the Clinton's history of emasculating the military, verifies that this grievously flawed woman would be the female version of the Jimmy Carter debacle that gave us the Ayatollah Khomeini who ushered in rampant Islamic radicalism; block-long lines at our gasoline stations; a severely hollow military; and, a record Misery Index. Only much worse. Considering all of Hillary's recent gaffes, e.g. "I voted FOR IT (referring to the Bankruptcy Bill); but, I was glad to see that it didn't pass."; her hallucinations over "Landing under intense sniper fire in Bosnia."; or her fantasized role in the Irish Peace Process; and, her increasingly frequent crying jags, one has to wonder if excessive use of Botox has affected her mental stability. It's no wonder that her campaign staff is shielding her from reporter and audience unscripted questions. The prospect of Madam Hillary as President; in a word: TERRIFYING. Greg Neubeck

As a conservative Christian who votes Democratic most of the time, I find Hillary's lying about her experience "under fire" in Bosnia far more troubling than Obama's minister's sermons. Her lying raises questions about her ethics and reminds me of Bill's "I didn't have sexual relations with that woman." She seems to want to have us accept a lesser standard for truth and honesty. I can understand Barak's position though. We attend a Reformed Church in America and our old minister invited an anti-euthanasia minster to preach in our church during a Right to Die ballot issue here. I was deeply offended by both his sermon and and the fact that Rev. G invited him, but I didn't leave our church for that reason. Nor, do I leave the church because our minister and some members want the state to interfere with a woman's decisions about her health and body (i.e. Right-to-Life). I have been successful though in getting the handing out of R-t-L voting guides after services though.

MONTHS ago, before the TX and Ohio primaries, when Hillary was touting her "years of executive experience" I kept asking on every WaPo board and in letters to the editor of several newspapers, "What, EXACTLY is the experience Hillary claims to have, in detail?"

The media, instead of addressing that question, went right along with the Clinton campaigns' allegation that Obama had not been "vetted" and that the media was giving Obama a "free pass." They claimed the media was "bashing " Hillary, and so she was entitled to non-stop positive press coverage and trips to SNL and the Daily Show in the week before those major primaries.

NOW, this late in the fiasco, the media has suddenly discovered that with Hillary, "there is no there." Hillary can legitiamtely claim a few years of corporate law practice, a failed attempt to create a national health plan under her husband's administration, 8 years as an embattled first lady, and 6 years in the Senate where she has done nothing of significance. Thats it. If those facts had been visible to the public 8 months ago, perhaps a number of the other Democratic candidates would have made a much more serious run for the nomination. It was the press's constant reiteration of the "inevitable" Clinton candidacy that removed very good people from the process early on.

I wonder for how many more election cycles will the American people tolerate a corporate media manipulating opinion and deciding elections?

jreno19, you should take a little time to read a little book by Kevin Phillips, American Dynasty (2004)and then consider that we have been led by one of the most powerful political/economic dynasty to ever hold power in the history of the US. Now we are being asked to let the Clintons create a Democratic dynasty. You need to look at what voting for the Bush dynasty and its network of reactionary Republicans has done to this country. We went from being the respected leader of the world and having a budget surplus to being hated by the world, no longer trusted to lead the free world, broke, and on the verge of entering another "Great Depression" caused by the "anti-New Deal" de-regulators who have held power since Ron Reagen. What happened to the regulations that kept our economy free of economic shenanigans where the "insiders" take the "rubes." We have had a series of economic bubbles for the last 16 years that remind me of the "Roaring 20s!" This is the gift of the Bush Dynasty. Hillary seems to have the same willingness to play free and loose with the truth, calling lies "misstatements" and keeping the same old network of "movers and shakers" in power "within the beltway." All we will get if she get the nomination and wins the election is the same old policies and the same old cast. McCain has tied himself to the Bush Dynasty and it's cast of characters, including the Halliburton and other Texas Oilmen. Remember he was a key figure in the old Savings & Loan disaster. Barak's connection to one ethically challenged developer in Chicago is nothing compared to the baggage that McCain and Clinton are carrying. Barak seems to be the best hope we have for a real change of direction that we have had in years.

Obama lied and then changed the subject. You don't need a Harvard law degree and a "Starbuck's caffeine buzz" to recognize this. Where was the esteemed "factchecker", his adored Pinocchios and the notorious Obama sycophants-- Russert, Matthews, Robinson, Todd, etc. during that uncomfortable Obama
incident?

Please--give me a break.

Why this matters? Because the Clintons will say any everything to get elected. She'll tell you want to hear to get elected, then once in office, she'll switch it up on you. It's not about helping the middle class, for her it's a political agenda to gain power. And some people still want to defend her out-right lies. There's a difference between a mistake and telling lies over and over again. You don't make a mistake about being shot at, when there are really troops out there that are being shot at. Shame on H.C.

We all know Hillary lies, nothing new there. She has to lie to claim she has foreign policy experience. Hillary has as much real foreign policy experience as any other First Lady and no more. The big Pinocchio lie is that she claims experience from the Clinton White House and it is the real fairy tale. Her experience is minimal and her judgment and trust is below average; at 3AM she is the last person I would want making a decision since the ones she makes during the day are wrong.

After reading about Hillary admitting that she is occasionally a human being and mis-spoke, I haven't stopped laughing for several hours. The truth finally comes out: Hillary doesn't view herself as one of us. She is different.

Maybe she means she is better than us; maybe she means she is smarter than all of us; maybe she means richer than most of us; maybe she means she is a better actress than most of us; maybe she means she can avoid prosecution better than us; and maybe she is so self absorbed that she can't see beyond her own ego. Whatever she means, one thing is certain and that is no one will ever be calling her President.

Let me get this straight: she is allowed to "misspeak" because she is "only human." Does she hold her opponents to the same standards? Of course not. While she is allowed to be human, her opponents must be perfect. Hillary, for the sake of the Democratic party you supposedly love, please stop your campaign now.

It's not only the "you knows."

It's the "ahs", too.

HRC does the " Ah, you know, ah..." frequently. She does it while she is gathering her thoughts (or her next lie - you be the judge.)

It's a terrible speech habit. I'm surprised no one has called her on it before, esp. her staff.

How does one "misspeak" about something as extraordinary and life-changing as coming under sniper fire? Either you did or you didn't; it's not something you misremember or casually mis-describe. This is just a big, fat, whopping, preposterous lie in a transparent attempt to portray a trivial First Lady photo-op event as the moral equivalent of combat experience, aiming to claim foreign policy and national security credentials that Sen. Clinton clearly does not possess. Unfortunately for her but fortunately for the rest of us, she got caught red-handed. This episode confirms and reinforces a lifelong pattern of lies and deception that has not escaped the attention of the voting public. Even before this lie, a clear majority of the American people were telling pollsters they did not think Hillary Clinton was "honest and trustworthy." Even her most ardent supporters are now backed into admitting that she isn't honest and trustworthy, but they argue it doesn't matter because she's no worse than other politicians. But that's not what the American people are looking for in a president. After Bush's lies about Iraq and WMD, we're looking for a president who will restore honor, dignity, and integrity to the White House, who will level with the American people. Hillary Clinton has disqualified herself by getting caught up in an egregious and completely gratuitous lie.

Will Obama check his record?

March 25, 2008

Obama Took Credit for Other Senators' Work, Media Largely Ignores it

by D. Cupples | Understandably, many media are all over Hillary Clinton's exaggerated claims about her trip to Bosnia in 1996 (e.g., NY Times)

At the same time, most media seem oddly unaware of a story in yesterday's Washington Post about Barack Obama's having falsely grabbed credit for other legislators' work -- not just in the Illinois legislature, but also while in the U.S. Senate.

In April 2006, according to the Washington Post, six senators ran into Obama while heading to a news conference to announce an immigration bill. Obama tagged along. When the microphone came his way, Obama said:

"'I want to cite Lindsey Graham, Sam Brownback, Mel Martinez, Ken Salazar, myself, Dick Durbin, Joe Lieberman . . . who've actually had to wake up early to try to hammer this stuff out,'" (The Post)

Senate staff members found it a "galling moment," because Obama had done little or no heavy lifting on that project.

Sen. Arlen Specter politely commented: "It's not an unusual matter for senators to take a little extra credit."

That immigration bill died, but some senators went back to the drawing board and the early-morning meetings, from which Sen. Obama was "notably absent." Fast forward to some day in 2007, about which The Post reports:

"At one meeting, three key negotiators recalled, he [Obama] entered late and raised a number of questions about the bill's employment verification system. [Sen. Ted] Kennedy and Specter both rebuked him, saying that the issue had already been resolved and that he was coming late to the discussion. Kennedy dressed him down, according to witnesses, and Obama left shortly thereafter."

Fast forward to March 2008. About two weeks ago, Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CN) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MI) unveiled proposals to help homeowners facing foreclosure. On Monday, Sen. Obama seemed to seek "top billing." The Post reports:

"'At this moment, we must come together and act to address the housing crisis that set this downturn in motion and continues to eat away at the public's confidence in the market,' Obama said. 'We should pass the legislation I put forward with my colleague Chris Dodd to create meaningful incentives for lenders to buy or refinance existing mortgages so that Americans facing foreclosure can keep their homes.'"

"Dodd did say that Obama supported the bill, as does Clinton. But he could not offer pride of authorship to the candidate [Obama] he wants to see in the White House next year."

Translation: Sen. Dodd -- who recently endorsed Obama -- politely said that had Obama lied.

In February, Wonkette summarized a Houston Press article by Todd Spivak, which describes Obama's rapid rise in the Illinois legislature. Below are parts of the summary:

"Barack's entire record of state legislation that he touts now was done in his first year as a state senator, so that he could have some record when he wanted to run for higher office, immediately....

"Then, in 2002, black Democrats took over the state legislature and were led by the powerful Majority Leader Emil Jones Jr. ("a gravel-voiced, dark-skinned African-American known for chain-smoking cigarettes on the Senate floor"). Since Jones was powerful and black, Barack -- and this has been reported before -- asked Jones to make him a U.S. Senator. 'I'm gonna make me a U.S. Senator,' Jones said to a friend.

"Jones 'appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.'"...

Here's a bit more from Spivak's article:

"'I took all the beatings and insults and endured all the racist comments over the years from nasty Republican committee chairmen,' State Senator Rickey Hendon, the original sponsor of landmark racial profiling and videotaped confession legislation yanked away by Jones and given to Obama, complained to me at the time. 'Barack didn't have to endure any of it, yet, in the end, he got all the credit.'

"'I don't consider it bill jacking,' Hendon told me. 'But no one wants to carry the ball 99 yards all the way to the one-yard line, and then give it to the halfback who gets all the credit and the stats in the record book.'

"During his seventh and final year in the state Senate, Obama's stats soared. He sponsored a whopping 26 bills passed into law -- including many he now cites in his presidential campaign when attacked as inexperienced. (Houston Press)

Admittedly, I've gotten lost in the very interesting details.

My point is this: from commercial media's perspective, it's juicy stuff when a candidate has nearly habitually (not just once or twice) taken credit for legislative work that he didn't actually do. It's especially newsworthy when that candidate has repeatedly marketed himself as honest, clean, and above "politics as usual."

Yet, most newspapers and networks have failed to report these details to the public.

I can't help remembering the lead up to the Iraq war, that dismal period during which most journalists and media outlets simply failed to question anything that our war-eager president said.

I hope the media quickly becomes more diligent and even handed.

Dear Washington Post comments board:

I wanted to apologize for misspeaking the other day when I claimed to be the Queen of England. What I meant was that with the beautiful day and a decent night's sleep, I felt like royalty. It just came out wrong.

Also, when I posted last week that in my spare time I had discovered the cure for all cancers (a little lemon juice mixed with pulverized oregano), I just misspoke. What I really meant was that honey-lemon tea feels great when you have a cold. I don't know, it must have been a string of typos that just by coincidence formed correctly spelled words in valid grammatical arrangement. I have not, in fact, discovered the cure for cancer.

Finally, it was a misstatement when I declared that I won the National League Most Valuable Player award while manning shortstop for the Nats last year. What I meant to say is that I was once the second best hitter on my apartment building's softball team. I regret the misstatement.

I hope you realize that I say many things during the course of a day, or a year, and as such there are bound to be misstatements and misspeakings. I trust this will not effect your opinion of my honesty and forthrightness.

Sincerely,
B2O2
Prime Minister of Canada

The Party has signaled that Hillary has until June. If she's still behind in delegates and popular vote, it's over; there will be no dickering over super-delegates until the convention in August. It appears that the voters want the process to play out. Once again, favorable treatment for the Clintons. Any other candidate this far behind would have been drummed out of the race a long time ago.

HClinton is a liar. Her husband is a liar. They lie when they don't need to lie. To them, lies are like oxygen.

We all can accept the fact that all politicians lie from time to time. In modern times, they exist on the level of a hollywood actor who plays a role and in time, believes that they are indeed that role.

The Clintons, however, take that to a new level. They expand that tendency to not only aggrandize themselves, but to demonize others. We can all remember the "vast right wing conspiracy" in which all people on the right we charged with fabricating her husband's happy ending on a young girl's dress. A LOT of us on the right resented that. However, since the Clinton carnival was the only game in town, the MSM and the left in general was only too happy to believe such utter garbage. Now, of course, since the son of man is the socialist's rising star, the media is only too happy to treat the Clinton's in a manner which befits them. Well, its never too late - but an apology would be nice.

Just like the preposterous stories Kerry fed the media about his less than honorable time in Viet Nam. Had Obama been in that race, he would have been supporting the swift boat vets and Kerry would have been appropriately laughed off the stage.

Now, we need the same clarity of thought and honesty to deal with Obama. Anyone else who had such a paucity of experience and the obvious and undeniable connection to a world class hater would have advanced as far as David Duke.

We won't hold our breath.

It is not so much that Ms Clinton lies, it is that she never seems to be telling the truth. And, its her sang froid which is so unnerving. HRC speaks exclusively in the framework of how this phrase or that may effect some voter out there. There is a major disconnect between, mind and heart which makes her sort of creepy. Each word is used like an arrow with a specfic target in mind. Hence, her own campaign workers have nicknamed her the "The Terminator". She can speak in whatever voice and use whatever words she thinks will lure the electorate to vote for her, as if they are her prey.

Who can dispute the following?

1. Obama's message has consistently fought for and appealed to the soul and future unity of America, a message of real change - we are not as divided as our politics suggest

2. The Clinton's have consistently fought for their political lives, and have appealed to the same old divisions (and fears) between us - big states vs small states, democrat vs republican, black vs white, black vs brown, etc

America stands at a crossroads - real change or more of the same!

We will get what we deserve!

The scariest thing about the "commentary" from the Clintonistas is their total refusal to even marginally acknowledge the fact that this was a flat out lie. They try to justify her actions by claiming that Obama did the same thing, so it's OK for her to do so.

Of course, the differences between Obama/Wright (the most vehement of the Wright objectors obviously haven't actually listened to the full sermons; but, one should never let facts interfere with self-righteous indignation) and Obama/Rezko (the relationship has been explored in every gory detail by the Chicago papers, with no fire found behind the smoke) and this situation seem to escape them.

You can certainly claim, with complete justification, that Obama didn't handle the questions of his relationships with Wright and Rezko as honestly and completely as he should have, much less as quickly as he should have - but he did address them and admitted that he screwed up, big-time, in both cases. It's clear that nothing he says will satisfy those who have decided he's guilty, but those people can't say that he hasn't at least made the effort.

In Hillary's case, she created a story out of thin air, repeated it multiple times over the years and, when there was video to completely discredit her embellished version, chose to blow it off with absurdities (she misspoke; she was tired; Bill made her say it - just kidding).

If you want the right to point fingers at Obama's perceived integrity issues, you need to accept Hillary's, not make excuses and/or make believe it's a non-issue; if this is a non-issue, how can you claim that Rev. Wright is an issue, unless you want to be accused of hypocrisy?

And to make it even more disgusting, it was, 'hey I made a mistake, but what about the God Damn America preacher and Obama."

And it has to be put in context with ther other lies regarding fabricated foreign policy experience regarding being part of the Northern Ireland Peace Process ans "standing up to China on human rights"..

How can you work with members of Congress and foreign leaders if you are a congenital liar. What price will the country pay if she lies to members of Congress to get their votes and then backs out of a deal. As her husband did. Nothing got done because after a while he could not get the votes together. Not because of some "right-wing conspiracy" she made up.

Someone I greatly admire says: "we all make mistakes. Making mistakes doesn't bring us down, it's defending our mistakes that's the problem." And that, my friends, is a great analysis of Mrs. Clinton's central flaw. She has this idea of who she needs to be, of what she needs to turn herself into for us to "like her." She is so managed, and poll-inspired that there is no there there. And because she has no true internal, moral compass she can't do the simplest act of a humble leader -- admit a mistake and seek forgiveness and maybe use the mistake as a teaching moment to inspire better actions by your supporters. The Clintons have never been responsible for anything in their political life; it's the right-wing conspiracy, the media conspiracy, the black conspiracy, the anti-feminist conspiracy etc. etc. Although she projects this image of strength, this intransigent and insular need to always be right is a dangerous character flaw that I think this country has had enough of over the past 8 years. For the more I see Sen. Clinton, the more I realize her model is not Bubba Bill -- but paranoid George Bush. Close to the vest, all about loyalty, insular, opinionated and never able to say he's wrong. That is one redux I don't want any part of.

Actors misspeak if they transpose, for instance, a piece of dialogue from one scene to another. Anyone may misspeak by inadvertently using the wrong word or saying something rashly. These are the normal limits of the verb's meaning. To use it to describe a patent untruth is an exercise in obfuscation. It reminds one of the issue of Saddam's WMD where the statements regarding these horrid things were not directly linked to tangible evidence of their existence in Iraq, In this case we are diverted to consider the circumstances surrounding Senator Clinton's Bosnia claims rather than the untruth itself.

As a reaction to an unheralded crisis it might usefully be compared to Senator Obama's earlier response to the public exposure of his Pastor's inflammatory sermonising, one threw up a smokescreen while the other turned up the lights.

"Gosh, lighten up, guys," she told the reporters. "I say millions of words every week..."

86,400 seconds in a day. That makes about 600,000 seconds in a week. Assuming she talks constantly - even in her sleep, that means over three words per second.

I know she's a fast talker, but...

Bill is fighting to return to the WH, and that is anti-constitutional. Senator Obama has to contest the Clinton dynasty machine, not just Hillary. As for Walter Mondale's claim that it is harder for a woman to be elected POTUS instead of a black man, ask Mondale how many (white) women are in the House and Senate in contrast to how many black men. How many women attend college in contrast to black men. How do (white) women do in life with money and housing and health and mortality in contrast to black men? As a successful professional woman, I am heartily ashamed to hear someone I used to admire play the race and gender card to advantage the Clinton dynasty. Carville also speaks for the Clinton dynasty. Carville has shown tremendous disrespect for the first and only Hispanic governor and should be drummed out of the Democratic party, if the Clinton campaign will not disavow him. Hillary is a horrible liar who cannot tell the difference between truth and lie.

Obama's far worse. From DD --

Ok now why don't we take a look at some of the instances where St. Obama's misspoken, eh?

Just Embellished Words: Senator Obama's Record of Exaggerations & Misstatements

Once again, the Obama campaign is getting caught saying one thing while doing another. They are personally attacking Hillary even though Sen. Obama has been found mispeaking and embellishing facts about himself more than ten times in recent months. Senator Obama's campaign is based on words -not a record of deeds - and if those words aren't backed up by facts, there's not much else left.

"Senator Obama has called himself a constitutional professor, claimed credit for passing legislation that never left committee, and apparently inflated his role as a community organizer among other issues. When it comes to his record, just words won't do. Senator Obama will have to use facts as well," Clinton spokesman Phil Singer said.

Sen. Obama consistently and falsely claims that he was a law professor. The Sun-Times reported that, "Several direct-mail pieces issued for Obama's primary [Senate] campaign said he was a law professor at the University of Chicago. He is not. He is a senior lecturer (now on leave) at the school. In academia, there is a vast difference between the two titles. Details matter." In academia, there's a significant difference: professors have tenure while lecturers do not. [Hotline Blog, 4/9/07; Chicago Sun-Times, 8/8/04]

Obama claimed credit for nuclear leak legislation that never passed. "Obama scolded Exelon and federal regulators for inaction and introduced a bill to require all plant owners to notify state and local authorities immediately of even small leaks. He has boasted of it on the campaign trail, telling a crowd in Iowa in December that it was 'the only nuclear legislation that I've passed.' 'I just did that last year,' he said, to murmurs of approval. A close look at the path his legislation took tells a very different story. While he initially fought to advance his bill, even holding up a presidential nomination to try to force a hearing on it, Mr. Obama eventually rewrote it to reflect changes sought by Senate Republicans, Exelon and nuclear regulators. The new bill removed language mandating prompt reporting and simply offered guidance to regulators, whom it charged with addressing the issue of unreported leaks. Those revisions propelled the bill through a crucial committee. But, contrary to Mr. Obama's comments in Iowa, it ultimately died amid parliamentary wrangling in the full Senate." [New York Times, 2/2/08]

Obama misspoke about his being conceived because of Selma. "Mr. Obama relayed a story of how his Kenyan father and his Kansan mother fell in love because of the tumult of Selma, but he was born in 1961, four years before the confrontation at Selma took place. When asked later, Mr. Obama clarified himself, saying: 'I meant the whole civil rights movement.'" [New York Times, 3/5/07]

LA Times: Fellow organizers say Sen. Obama took too much credit for his community organizing efforts. "As the 24-year-old mentor to public housing residents, Obama says he initiated and led efforts that thrust Altgeld's asbestos problem into the headlines, pushing city officials to call hearings and a reluctant housing authority to start a cleanup. But others tell the story much differently. They say Obama did not play the singular role in the asbestos episode that he portrays in the best-selling memoir 'Dreams From My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance.' Credit for pushing officials to deal with the cancer-causing substance, according to interviews and news accounts from that period, also goes to a well-known preexisting group at Altgeld Gardens and to a local newspaper called the Chicago Reporter. Obama does not mention either one in his book." [Los Angeles Times, 2/19/07]

Chicago Tribune: Obama's assertion that nobody had indications Rezko was engaging in wrongdoing 'strains credulity.' "...Obama has been too self-exculpatory. His assertion in network TV interviews last week that nobody had indications Rezko was engaging in wrongdoing strains credulity: Tribune stories linked Rezko to questionable fundraising for Gov. Rod Blagojevich in 2004 -- more than a year before the adjacent home and property purchases by the Obamas and the Rezkos." [Chicago Tribune editorial, 1/27/08]

Obama was forced to revise his assertion that lobbyists 'won't work in my White House.' "White House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was forced to revise a critical stump line of his on Saturday -- a flat declaration that lobbyists 'won't work in my White House' after it turned out his own written plan says they could, with some restrictions... After being challenged on the accuracy of what he has been saying -- in contrast to his written pledge -- at a news conference Saturday in Waterloo, Obama immediately softened what had been his hard line in his next stump speech." [Chicago Sun-Times, 12/16/07]

FactCheck.org: 'Selective, embellished and out-of-context quotes from newspapers pump up Obama's health plan.' "Obama's ad touting his health care plan quotes phrases from newspaper articles and an editorial, but makes them sound more laudatory and authoritative than they actually are. It attributes to The Washington Post a line saying Obama's plan would save families about $2,500. But the Post was citing the estimate of the Obama campaign and didn't analyze the purported savings independently. It claims that "experts" say Obama's plan is "the best." "Experts" turn out to be editorial writers at the Iowa City Press-Citizen - who, for all their talents, aren't actual experts in the field. It quotes yet another newspaper saying Obama's plan "guarantees coverage for all Americans," neglecting to mention that, as the article makes clear, it's only Clinton's and Edwards' plans that would require coverage for everyone, while Obama's would allow individuals to buy in if they wanted to." [FactCheck.org, 1/3/08]

Sen. Obama said 'I passed a law that put Illinois on a path to universal coverage,' but Obama health care legislation merely set up a task force. "As a state senator, I brought Republicans and Democrats together to pass legislation insuring 20,000 more children. And 65,000 more adults received health care...And I passed a law that put Illinois on a path to universal coverage." The State Journal-Register reported in 2004 that "The [Illinois State] Senate squeaked out a controversial bill along party lines Wednesday to create a task force to study health-care reform in Illinois. [...] In its original form, the bill required the state to offer universal health care by 2007. That put a 'cloud' over the legislation, said Sen. Dale Righter, R-Mattoon. Under the latest version, the 29-member task force would hold at least five public hearings next year." [Obama Health Care speech, 5/29/07; State Journal-Register, 5/20/04]

ABC News: 'Obama...seemed to exaggerate the legislative progress he made' on ethics reform. "ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: During Monday's Democratic presidential debate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., seemed to exaggerate the legislative progress he has made on disclosure of "bundlers," those individuals who aggregate their influence with the candidate they support by collecting $2,300 checks from a wide network of wealthy friends and associates. When former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel alleged that Obama had 134 bundlers, Obama responded by telling Gravel that the reason he knows how many bundlers he has raising money for him is "because I helped push through a law this past session to disclose that." Earlier this year, Obama sponsored an amendment [sic] in the Senate requiring lobbyists to disclose the candidates for whom they bundle. Obama's amendment would not, however, require candidates to release the names of their bundlers. What's more, although Obama's amendment was agreed to in the Senate by unanimous consent, the measure never became law as Obama seemed to suggest. Gravel and the rest of the public know how many bundlers Obama has not because of a 'law' that the Illinois Democrat has 'pushed through' but because Obama voluntarily discloses that information." [ABC News, 7/23/07]

Obama drastically overstated Kansas tornado deaths during campaign appearance. "When Sen. Barack Obama exaggerated the death toll of the tornado in Greensburg, Kan, during his visit to Richmond yesterday, The Associated Press headline rapidly evolved from 'Obama visits former Confederate capital for fundraiser' to `Obama rips Bush on Iraq war at Richmond fundraiser' to 'Weary Obama criticizes Bush on Iraq, drastically overstates Kansas tornado death toll' to 'Obama drastically overstates Kansas tornado deaths during campaign appearance.' Drudge made it a banner, ensuring no reporter would miss it." [politico.com, 5/9/07]

And if sleep deprivation is all that takes to start lying to the people, then she really doesn't belong in the white house.

Hillary Clinton = The Energizer Bunny of Deceit. STILL LYING.

You did not misspeak and if you were just "tired" can we rely on you to answer that 3 AM call without lying?

She told at least 9 lies in one press conference.

1. She did not encounter sniper fire.
2. There was a greeting ceremony.
3. She did not misspeak
4. There was no corkscrew landing
5. Bill Clinton did not send her to the dangerous places that even he didn't want to go to
6. Sinbad is a comedian and just because he is a comedian does not mean he does not know the facts. Verges on calling Sinbad a liar.
7. It was not the first time in 12 years that she "misspoke", it was at least the 3rd time in 4 months
8. She studiously avoided the question "did you recall hearing gunfire" by instead answering the question "were you told there was gunfire.
9. You didnt just run to the car with your head down.

The BBC coverage of the Tuzla dust-up had the reporter narrating over the footage of Sen. Clinton walking across the tarmac, describing her as "the plucky First Lady." My American Heritage dictionary defines plucky as "brave, courageous." Leave it to our British friends to strike the right tone of sarcasm without being comteptuous, and using words to nail the absurdity of her claims.

It's so perfect that a comedian corrected her remarks for the American people before she even had been reminded from her own confidants or self.

The point is simple. Stop running your mouth.
When people hear you run your mouth, they begin to be reminded of the truth!

No one should stop Hillary from continuing the elections. That would be wrong.
But she should stop herself if she really was out to do good!

Status quo will not work anyway Hillary!

The Editor
The Washington Post

Dear Sir,

"You see things; and you say, 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say, 'Why not?'" [George Bernard Shaw]. So what's the big deal about Hillary Clinton embellishing her account of her 1996 visit to Bosnia with a little fantasy, a little dreaming? After all, the good Senator wasn't exactly on a Mickey Mouse trip to Disneyland and one could suspect that prior to her visit, she would have been advised by security personnel of the potential dangers on the ground. As it happens, there were reports of snipers in nearby hills, adjacent to the airstrip in Tuzla, but no shots were fired at the aircraft. In any event, hasn't she exuded millions of words on the election trail and isn't it only humanly possible for her to make an inconsequential slip of the tongue in her reminiscence of past events? So to all you decent folk I say, give the good lady Senator a break and let her engage in a little 'misspeak' and tell it as it really was, with guns and drums and canon balls and a smidge of sniper fire, thrown in for good measure.

Most of us tell lies; we tell lies or 'misspeak', naturally. The difference amongst us humans is in the frequency, target, and degree of those lies. Politicians lie, they lie through their dentures and they lie very naturally. In fact, we all tell porkies from time to time to conceal facts, avoid undesirable situations or even enhance our reputations. Sometimes, we tell whoppers when little ones would do and tell little white lies when the truth would be more credible and less complex. There is a reason why you are asked in court to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. It is because most of the time that is not what people do. Certain animals in the wild use colour change as a camouflage to avoid detection and in some instances to protect their very existence. Humans on the other hand are equally creative and adaptable, but instead use deception to protect their hides or save their bacon. In other words, they tell lies; skinny ones, fat ones and ones in between. So why are we so sensitive to, or even repulsed by, a little picturesque 'misspeak' from others and more particularly from our politicians? Well it may be more to do with our moralistic prejudices or even our pervasive psychological attributes, which prompt subliminally, intense emotional reactions. Even though we can be adept at air brushing the occasional fib, and we are not too disturbed by entertaining a certain level of creative yarn spinning, it is quite a different matter when we are confronted by the compulsive or pathological liar. A pathological liar is someone who frequently exaggerates his or her stories in a way that he or she believes will impress his or her audience. It may well be the case that the pathological liar unlike the normal liar, believes at the time the lie he or she is telling to be true and may even create a labyrinth of fact and fantasy within the narrative. Senator Clinton has told us, of dodging sniper fire in Bosnia and of her Hillary connection with the conqueror of Mount Everest and other colourful bedtime fables besides. These are not serious peccadilloes, but small potatoes which provide no evidence to suggest that she is any different to us 'occasional fibbing' mortals or for that matter that she is a pathological liar.

More importantly, our focus should be on the narrator who intentionally omits factual specifics relating to their business associations or private liaisons, in order to engage or deceive the listener. In this respect, I do not consider Senator Obama to be a dishonest person or an inveterate liar, but he is guilty of the sin of omission and has shown his deftness at occasional, if not serial evasiveness, when questioned directly on relevant personal issues. I refer to Senator Obama's personal links with the Chicago developer Mr. Antoin Rezko, who is facing federal corruption charges. Notwithstanding the fact that, Mr. Rezko has to date not been found guilty by the courts and remains innocent, until proven otherwise, of the current charges, it remains unclear the extent of the Senator's associations with this business gentleman or whether he is a beneficiary of this gentleman's appreciation of aspiring politicians. Furthermore, Senator Obama has declined to clarify his reasons for his apparent unequivocal support for the embittered Rev. Jeremiah Wright. We can only assume that in the course of his 17 years of religious indoctrination that the Senator protested in silence, if not demonstratively, with the insidious and non patriotic diatribe of this respected pastor and that he remains uninfluenced by this profound lifetime experience?

The contest for the Democratic nomination between the two Senators will inevitably be decided by the Super delegates. Let us hope that both candidates emerge with honour and that in the process, irrevocable damage is not inflicted on the Democratic Party through lies, dam lies or even omissions.

Yours truly,

John Shortall

Ok, I am going to say this.

Many people DON'T LIKE OBama.

But, but, if by some chance he is the real deal. Actually steeped in public policy, IS a hard worker and really cares about this country. I would not have a problem voting for him even if he were Frankenstein. I do not want to drink a beer with him or have dinner at his house. Thank You. I want to HIRE him to fix the many problems America has. GET IT?

As I happens, I don't know Hillary personally, as the rest of you don't. I do know, based on her history, that she is smart, has a commanding knowledge of public policy and if pundits, fellow Senators and the people of New York are to be believed, she works "her tail off" as the junior Senator from New York.

Obama has the opposite reputation, lazy, takes credit for others' work and is not a policy wonk.

GET THE PICTURE?

recent statement in the Times from Clinton's speechwriter and chief of staff about that trip makes me wonder if you are being balanced, fact-checker. If what they say is true (and clearly they are biased), the preparations for landing in Bosnia were quite stressful and there was certainly fear of snipers on the ground.

This seems like important context and doesn not look like the picture you presented above. Given that there are those in the US (many who post here) who would LOVE to believe that Clinton would fully make up a story like this out of nothing, it seems important to show the whole picture. Just look at how often people accuse her of "lying" on the Post website.

Here's a quote from the article (which can be found here == http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/01/opinion/01muscatine.html?em&ex=1207195200&en=ebfd55caa402c3c0&ei=5070)

"We flew in a C-17 cargo plane from Germany to Bosnia precisely because it was capable of steep descents and ascents into and out of areas of conflict. We were issued flak jackets on the plane before landing in Tuzla and were told the tarmac ceremony might be canceled or curtailed due to sniper fire from the surrounding hillsides. The first lady and Chelsea Clinton were moved to the armored cockpit for the landing. Armored vehicles were placed around the tarmac, and Apache helicopters hovered overhead."

Just to set the record straight, there still were armed patrols and sniper fire present in Bosnia in 1996. People were killed by sniper fire in Sarajevo trams in 1996. The alleged quote that NATO troops were controlling the entire are do not hold.
