Hillary's Balkan Adventures, Part II

Greeting ceremony, Tuzla military airport, Bosnia, March 25, 1996.

"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
--Hillary Clinton, speech at George Washington University, March 17, 2008.

Hillary Clinton has been regaling supporters on the campaign trail with hair-raising tales of a trip she made to Bosnia in March 1996. In her retelling, she was sent to places that her husband, President Clinton, could not go because they were "too dangerous." When her account was challenged by one of her traveling companions, the comedian Sinbad, she upped the ante and injected even more drama into the story. In a speech earlier this week, she talked about "landing under sniper fire" and running for safety with "our heads down."

There are numerous problems with Clinton's version of events.

The Facts

(Updated below)

As a reporter who visited Bosnia soon after the December 1995 Dayton Peace agreement, I can attest that the physical risks were minimal during this period, particularly at a heavily fortified U.S. Air Force base, such as Tuzla. Contrary to the claims of Hillary Clinton and former Army secretary Togo West, Bosnia was not "too dangerous" a place for President Clinton to visit in early 1996. In fact, the first Clinton to visit the Tuzla Air Force base was not Hillary, but Bill, on January 13, 1996.

Had Hillary Clinton's plane come "under sniper fire" in March 1996, we would certainly have heard about it long before now. Numerous reporters, including the Washington Post's John Pomfret, covered her trip. A review of nearly 100 news accounts of her visit shows that not a single newspaper or television station reported any security threat to the First Lady. "As a former AP wire service hack, I can safely say that it would have been in my lead had anything like that happened," said Pomfret.

According to Pomfret, the Tuzla airport was "one of the safest places in Bosnia" in March 1996, and "firmly under the control" of the 1st Armored Division.

Far from running to an airport building with their heads down, Clinton and her party were greeted on the tarmac by smiling U.S. and Bosnian officials. An eight-year-old Moslem girl, Emina Bicakcic, read a poem in English. An Associated Press photograph of the greeting ceremony, above, shows a smiling Clinton bending down to receive a kiss.

"There is peace now," Emina told Clinton, according to Pomfret's report in the Washington Post the following day, "because Mr. Clinton signed it. All this peace. I love it."

The First Lady's schedule, released on Wednesday and available here, confirms that she arrived in Tuzla at 8.45 a.m. and was greeted by various dignitaries, including Emina Bicakcic, (whose name has mysteriously been redacted from the document.)

You can see CBS News footage of the arrival ceremony here. The footage shows Clinton walking calmly out of the back of the C-17 military transport plane that brought her from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.

Among the U.S. officials on hand to greet Clinton at the airport was Maj. Gen. William Nash, the commander of U.S. troops in Bosnia. Nash told me that he was unaware of any security threat to Clinton during her eight-hour stay in Tuzla. He said, however, that Clinton had a "busy schedule" and may have got the impression that she was being hurried on her way. See clarification below.

According to Sinbad, who provided entertainment on the trip along with the singer Sheryl Crow, the "scariest" part was deciding where to eat. As he told Mary Ann Akers of The Post, "I think the only 'red-phone' moment was: 'Do we eat here or at the next place.'" Sinbad questioned the premise behind the Clinton version of events. "What kind of president would say 'Hey man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife. Oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you."

Replying to Sinbad earlier this week, Clinton dismissed him as "a comedian." Her campaign referred me to Togo West, who was also on the trip and is a staunch Hillary supporter. West could not remember "sniper fire" himself, but said there was no reason to doubt the First Lady's version of events. "Everybody's perceptions are different," he told me.

Clinton made no mention of "sniper fire" in her autobiography "Living History," published in 2003, although she did say there were "reports of snipers" in the hills around the airport.

UPDATE Friday 6:45 p.m.

Lissa Muscatine, who served as Hilary Clinton's chief speechwriter in 1996 and accompanied her on the Bosnia trip, feels that I have failed to provide a full picture of what took place. She gave me her "vivid recollections" of the arrival in Tuzla, which I quote below:

I was on the plane with then First Lady Hillary Clinton for the trip from Germany into Bosnia in 1996. We were put on a C17-- a plane capable of steep ascents and descents -- precisely because we were flying into what was considered a combat zone. We were issued flak jackets for the final leg because of possible sniper fire near Tuzla. As an additional precaution, the First Lady and Chelsea were moved to the armored cockpit for the descent into Tuzla. We were told that a welcoming ceremony on the tarmac might be canceled because of sniper fire in the hills surrounding the air strip. From Tuzla, Hillary flew to two outposts in Bosnia with gunships escorting her helicopter.

UPDATE Saturday 8:45 a.m.

Gen. Nash says that I misquoted him in saying he was unaware of any "security threat" to the First Lady. While he was unaware of any "sniper threat," he now tells me there were a couple of "security concerns" that day, which he found out about after returning to his headquarters after greeting Clinton at the airport. There was a "non-specific report" of a possible truck bomb in the area. The military also had information that "some of the communications associated with the First Lady's visit were being monitored."

"In both cases, we took appropriate security action," said Nash, adding that Clinton's visit was not disrupted.

Anybody else with first-hand memories of Clinton's Tuzla trip, please send them along.

The Pinocchio Test

Clinton's tale of landing at Tuzla airport "under sniper fire" and then running for cover is simply not credible. Photographs and video of the arrival ceremony, combined with contemporaneous news reports, tell a very different story. Four Pinocchios.

The real lessons from this campaign are most applicable to resume writers: "stuff the damned thing to the hilt, and no one will care!"
None of the three candidates running is worth electing as President. It's time to start over again, while we can, and pick a new set that is actually worth a hoot. These three all have an incredible ability to disguise the truth. They are all extremely dangerous to elect.

4 Pinocchios!

Bill Richardson doesn't need to puff up his own resume, and his judgment on who will make the best President carries a lot of credibility.

Posted by: FirstMouse | March 21, 2008 8:11 AM

Not to mention taking your daughter to such a "dangerous" place!

I just don't understand why people say things like this, especially when they are so easily verifiable--and you know they will be checked! It's not just Hillary, all sorts of high level people do this all the time, and get caught!

I know it's human nature to want to put yourself in the best light, but anyone who wants to be president needs to learn to stop and think before they say something like that, then don't say it!

Posted by: | March 21, 2008 8:11 AM

Liar, Liar pants on fire. Hey Hillary, its 3:00 am and the phone is ringing. Only you won't be there to answer it...Oh happy day!!!

They say if you repeat a lie often enough in the minds of the people it becomes true.
#1 "I did not have sex with that woman"
#2 " I was under fire in Bosnia"
#3 " I have all the experience I need to be Chief of Staff" etc etc

Posted by: peep1935 | March 21, 2008 9:00 AM

That definitely earned her four Pinocchios. I do not know what would be the reward for this blatantly hypocritical praise of Heather Mills (of gold-digger fame)

http://tpzoo.wordpress.com/2008/03/21/god-bless-you-heather/

Reminder this was, before she voted against a cluster bomb ban.

This doesn't surprise me. How much more info do people need to see how utterly dishonest the woman is. Doesn't this just speak to the issue of integrity? If she exaggerates s'thg this trivial, who knows what she will say..."Iraq has WMDs!" Do we want this again?????

My husband says Hillary is alot like George W. and I couldn't see the analogy...but as time goes on....it's becoming increasingly clear. She is not transparent and would iniate change or be a good President.

I only wish the super delegates would end this thing. Hillary is digging a deeper and deeper hole that the Democrats will be unable to extricate themselves from in the fall. They need to move NOW!

Outright lies, not shading, not spinning, these are the Clintons we know too well.

Problem is, with the Clinton flacks, like Ferraro, doing the race baiting and Hillary herself declaring John (100 years of war) McCain a better Commander-in-Chief than Barak, we are seeing the way the Clintons rebuilt the Democratic party.

It was built to defeat the Republicans by eliminating as many differences between them as possible. What's next, Bill courting the religious right? Lets see, the white male vote is the bed they have made for themselves. Richardson knows that.

Yes, Hillary Clinton distorts everyting or dismisses anyone who tries to show her up. I am sick and tred of hearing the media trying to analyze every word of Obama's speech. Why can't 'American Joe with Joe Scarborough and Mika keep trying to take apart the 'race' issue - eg. 'why does Obama bring up words on his white grandmother what is he trying to say.
It is time to move on and let the candidates move on with their solutions to the crisis facing the Amercan people. It is well known that the Clintons will continue to lie, cheat and steal if necessary. The media will not even mention the Peter F. Paul vs. Clinton #17 million dollar Fraud trial. Presently, California Superior Court judge Aurelio N. Munoz and lawyers for Peter Paul are seeking 'sworn testimonies' from all three Clintons, top Democratic officials and Terry McAuliffe of the Clinton campaign. A hearing is scheduled in Los Angeles, CA on April 25, 2008 with a trial scheduled for October.November of 2008. How many people have heard this on the news media. Isn't it about time that Hillary is really 'vetted'.

Nobody here in Britain and Northern Ireland has even heard of Hillary Clinton's supposed work for Ulster peace.

I was so amazed to hear her claim a role in N.Ireland peace that I checked the facts.

She claimed to have "brought Catholic and Protestant women together."

In fact, this claim comes from a time she was invited to attend one meeting of a cross-community womens' group that had been meeting regularly for nearly two decades. She gave a brief speech, left, and now claims to have brought these women together. Far from helping them, she is trying to claim credit for what they did. They brought themselves together years before Hillary had even heard of Northern Ireland.

Everyone in Britain finds Hillary's claims either laughable or offensive.

Here are the words of David Trimble, who won a NOBEL PEACE PRIZE for his work in ending the Troubles:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/03/08/wuspols108.xml

Nobel winner: Hillary Clinton's 'silly' Irish peace claims

'Hillary Clinton had no direct role in bringing peace to Northern Ireland and is a "wee bit silly" for exaggerating the part she played, according to Lord Trimble of Lisnagarvey, the Nobel Peace Prize winner and former First Minister of the province.

"I don't know there was much she did apart from accompanying Bill [Clinton] going around," he said. Her recent statements about being deeply involved were merely "the sort of thing people put in their canvassing leaflets" during elections. "She visited when things were happening, saw what was going on, she can certainly say it was part of her experience. I don't want to rain on the thing for her but being a cheerleader for something is slightly different from being a principal player."'

PS Everyone in Britain and Ireland, and Europe generally, vastly prefers Obama to either Hillary or McCain, two sides of the same nasty coin.

Posted by: egc52556 | March 21, 2008 11:21 AM

Trust me! This is just the tip of the iceberg.

"I was on the board of Walmart to push for more women in management and I didnt speak up on labor rights because I didnt want to waste my political capital." Yeah right! And I was born yesterday.

"I helped bring peace to Northern Ireland." Uh huh! So did the people who refilled the water glasses at the peace table.

"I was publicly for Nafta but privately against it." Sure you were.

"I was the president of the college Republicans but I'm a Democrat at heart." Uh huh! About that bridge in Brooklyn you wanted to sell me that you said once I buy it I can walk across it anytime i want, I'm interested.

Posted by: UncleRemus | March 21, 2008 11:26 AM

Yes, Hillary has become the exaggerator in chief.

Posted by: Goldie | March 21, 2008 11:27 AM

For all of the talk around press bias, why do we not here about these types of stories in any detail from other major news outlets. This is the kind of story that I find the most repulsive. There are and were US Soldiers placing themselves in harms away performing their missions in Bosnia. Now a politician cheapens their real sacrafice and the real dangers they faced by interjecting some "made for TV melodramatic fable". Commander in Chief? I don't think you could carry an Army Privates Jock or Sports Bra, much less lead and support them. Think before you lie.

Posted by: Al Kiessel | March 21, 2008 11:42 AM

And then she jumped out of the plane without a parachute and threw a hand grenade at them and killed all the bad guys and was awarded a Medal of Honor by the president. yeah right. Another big Clinton whopper. David Geffen was right about these two. What a couple of Arkansas liars.

Posted by: majorteddy | March 21, 2008 11:46 AM

It is amazing to me that this is not considered "news" either on the cable "news" channels or on the networks. Why aren't Hillary's lies being exposed openly? Are the news people in the pockets of the Clintons as are many of the democrats in their political machine? I am outraged by the entertainment and sensationalism priorities of the news organizations as opposed to reporting the truth. Kudos to this paper for trying to get the facts out.

Throw this on top of "She was for the war before she was against it" and it's 'Hello President McCain'. More electable my behind...

I urge the Fact-Checker to check who REALLY contacted the Canadian embassy over NAFTA.

Here in Canada, all the media has reported either that BOTH Obama and Clinton's campaigns did, or that it was actually Clinton's campaign, and the story got skewed in the telling.

For example:
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2008/03/05/4920341-cp.html

Embassy tight-lipped on whether NAFTA leak probe covers Wilson
By THE CANADIAN PRESS

'The CTV story reportedly orginated from (Canadian Prime Minister Stephen) Harper's chief of staff Ian Brodie, who told reporters in Ottawa that Hillary Clinton's campaign assured Canadian officials they need not worry about her NAFTA rhetoric.

There's been no explanation for why the focus shifted to Obama in the CTV report that went to air.'

In early 1996 I was a foreign service officer with the U.S. Information Agency, on temporary duty in Taszar, Hungary, the staging base for U.S. forces going to Bosnia. I was involved in the planning for President Clinton's January visit to Tuzla (He also came to Taszar). Even in January, danger in Bosnia -- particularly at a fortified U.S. base -- was minimal. By the time I left in late February, things had improved further, and continued to improve. Sniper fire in Tuzla in March defies credulity. Four Pinnochios aren't enough.

Posted by: george | March 21, 2008 1:09 PM

And don't forget Hillary's claim that she was named in after Sir Edmund Hillary in honor of his climb to the peak of Mt. Everest even though it later came out that Sir Edmunds accomplishment happened years after Mrs. Pinnochio was born.

Posted by: Keith Hood | March 21, 2008 1:22 PM

You don't misremember landing under sniper fire. You don't misremember running into a building with your head covered --- they wouldn't have taken her off the plane into sniper fire or possible sniper fire.

It is truly rich to see the Democrats, at this late date, indict the Clintonian practices with which we should ALL be quite familiar by now. I guess that sort of thing is okay against the hellish W but we don't care for it intermurally. Hilarious! As Bruce Willis said to the cop in Die Hard, "Welcome to the party, pal!"

Posted by: megapotamus | March 21, 2008 1:51 PM

HRC's desperation looks more pathetic by the day. Her rage at Obama's taking "her place" as Democratic nominee in 2008 is palpable. I believe she's willingly doing everything possible to tear him down to mortally wound him and throw the election to McCain, so she can run again in 4 years (when she's 64) instead of 8 years (when she's 68). I have donated to her campaign in the past and regret it.

Posted by: texaslovesamerica | March 21, 2008 1:53 PM

1) It was the 1st Armored Division 'Old ironsides', not the 1st Infantry Division 'The Big Red One'.

2) I was there in March, saw Sinbad in person- he was great. Just missed Sheryl Crow.

3) We received reports of all significant activity- if ANYONE was being shot at, we would have been alerted- let alone a VIP.

4) Tuzla airbase is very large- doubtful anyone could get a good shot in even if they wanted to.

5) BUT....there were active minefields and UXO all over Tuzla airbase so it was important not to wander off into certain unpaved, uncleared areas.

6) Sinbad is right- the food was good.

Posted by: Old Ironsides | March 21, 2008 2:04 PM

How many pinnochios got when he lied about never talking to the Canadian's about Nafta?

Posted by: r.mary | March 21, 2008 2:04 PM

Politicians don't get it. You just can't lie anymore. We'll catch you at it. John Kerry didn't learn and got his behind kicked (they weren't flip-flops--they were lies). And don't get me started about the Christmas in Cambodia fantasy. (Later Kerry said he was confused on the date--you know because to Catholics, Christmas is just another day.) Obama thought he could lie about his church, but people like charles johnson were able to retrieve the truth before they deleted it from the church's site--statements like that his churched believed that God should be for black people and against white people. The truth is Obama probably joined for political reasons. but in refusing to tell the truth he just keeps getting more and more stuck.

So Hillary spun an obvious fantasy, and now she is being caught, too.

Its all because we have thousands of "google monkeys" around constantly fact-checking everything. The age of the internet, which credit where credit is due, largely grew up under Bill Clinton's watch, ironically is the best tool for good government ever invented.

Posted by: Justin Walker | March 21, 2008 2:12 PM

But isn't the sniper fire seared, SEARED, in her memory?

Posted by: Ellen | March 21, 2008 2:16 PM

All I can say is that I've simply had it. I was so thrilled at the prospect of a woman--especially THIS woman--running for president. Having voted for her husband twice, I figured it would be a win-win to have them in the White House again. She ran a brilliant and seemingly principled campaign. Then things changed when she couldn't give a straight answer about former Governor Spitzer's proposal to give licenses to illegal aliens. That's when the whole thing started to unravel.

I'm just exhausted and have had it up to my left eyeball. The sleazy tactics, the drama, the trifling and lowdown surrogates, throwing another party member under the bus to prop up herself and Senator McCain. Although it was dubious for her to claim that her 8 years as First Lady should be included in her "35 years of experience," I was willing to cut her some slack. She was clearly in a unique position given the breadth of her travels. Now it appears she has manufactured experience she clearly doesn't have. Her recounting of her trip to Bosnia was one of the biggest whoppers I've ever seen, and it's so sad to see the woman reduced to this. Dodging bullets? It was so dangerous, yet not only did she travel with a couple of entertainers, but her own child accompanied her on this trip. These lies and exaggerations of hers were so easily exposed by the others who accompanied her on the trip and apparently by her own records.

I don't even have the heart to touch on how she's being ridiculed in the UK for her dubious claims of helping to bring peace to Northern Ireland and bringing Protestant and Catholic women together. So sad!

Posted by: jrobinson3 | March 21, 2008 2:18 PM

You have to wonder what will qualify as WMD's if she answered the phone at 3am, and how big the "kitchen sink" that she throws at them will be.

"Her campaign referred me to Togo West, who was also on the trip and is a staunch Hillary supporter.(Togo West) said there was no reason to doubt the First Lady's version of events. "Everybody's perceptions are different," he told me."

The Clintons aren't used to the American public using the Internet so readily to fact check and inform themselves. Clinton embellishing her foreign policy experience is only the tip of the deceptive ice burg that will sink this country farther into under education, war, fear and hate.

It's amazing how all the democrats are now realizing what the republicans were saying during the 90's: the Clintons are unprincipled liars who will say anything, do anything, harm anyone who gets in the way of their quest for power.

But I'm sure you were all supporting Bill in the late 90's.

In reply to the aptly named "Old Ironsides," you are right. It was the 1st Armored Division, not the 1st Infantry Division, that was stationed in Tuzla at the time. I have corrected it. Thanks.

Indeed, here we have someone who makes up fanciful but untrue stories about how she got her name, and didn't even know the name of the Russian president-elect and as a result treated him to an unexpected "gender reassignment" by mangling "Medvedev" into "Medvedova".

And in the meantime, such a hullabaloo over Barack's middle name, about which he's never confabulated.

By the time this is over, we're gonna have to clear-cut the rest of the Amazon rain forest to get enough wood for her Pinocchios.

time to step up to the plate Hillary and meet all of these attacks head on like your opponent did. Please submit the income tax returns and lists of contributors before Pennsylvania and the other nine vote. It is simply not right that they don't have your "transparency" before going to the voting booth. And while you're at it - think you better finally discuss the 17 million dollar lawsuit against you & Bill re:

During the entire decade long US engagement in Bosnia there wasn't a single hostile american casualty. There was a heartattack, a brawl between 2 US troops where one got stabbed. There was a few traffic accidents but I don't recall any casualties from those accidents.

Besides being stationed somewhere in Western Europe or maybe Japan, Bosnia was the best gig a soldier could possibly get. (Except maybe the first group that rolled in during winter that had to deal with all the rain and mud, but once the base was setup it was all gravy ;) )

I had a close family relative in Tuzla at the time of the courageous visit by the President and First Lady in 1996. He, along with 10,000 other U.S. airmen, tankers and paratroopers did not allow any snipers within 10 miles of the Clinton's party. There was no sniper fire and just so Mr. Hannaford knows what the real issue is, "She didn't tell the truth, Don". The truth, that's all, just the truth.
Do you honestly think that a setting U.S. President is going to be allowed to land where there is "sniper fire". Jesus! What a bunch of bunk! As I recall, one Secret Service agent literally sat on the top of LBJ when John Kennedy got shot in Dallas.
Hillary has a problem with the truth, like a lot of people do nowdays, but the difference is she is running for President! The closest Hillary has ever to a bullet is when she bit one to stay married to WCJ after the Monica fiasco.

It is inconceivable that the Professional Clinton Haters in the Media continue to doubt the future Saint Hillary of Little Rock.
Can the picture you have used leave any doubts?
Look, she is bending down. She is well below the level of the assorted random men and her daughter Chelsea. Since it is a still picture, we can see she is in a position that would enable her to run.
Presumably, she is preparing to pick up the cute little girl to protect her from the sniper fire -- what selflessness, to protect a Muslim child she has never met, ahead of her own flesh and blood daughter.
And like all really responsible leaders she knows that a smile calms children, which is why she is projecting this appearance of joyous normalcy under intense sniper fire which represented mortal danger to her and all those around (the guy aren't ducking because they're either brain dead or too ungallant to protect the little girl).
When this picture tells the whole story, surely you are one of those papers that has decided Barack (lucky to be Black!) Obama is somehow a more inspirational figure than Saint Hillary.
Be really, really careful what you say about the Infallible Clintons -- ever wonder how many singing Gennifer Flowers got after Hillary was through with her?

I served as the Air National guard Special Assistant to the Commander of U.S. Air Forces Europe during this period. The Air National Guard and Air Force Reserves Played a vital role in Bosnia in airlift, communications, air traffic control, and medical evacuation. I visited our pre-deployment staging base in Tezar, Hungary, received the pre-deployment threat analysis intelligence briefing and in turned briefed it to the Director of the Air National Guard and his staff in the Pentagon. I visited Tuzla 3 times, once just after we deployed into the area and twice afterward. My official visits took place both before and after this March date in question. As "Old Ironsides" stated the hazard of mines was the major threat locally. We were initially also concerned about anti-aircraft threats and potential sniper fire. I inquired about these threats on each visit and was told that they had not materialized. One of the firsts tasks of the 1st Armored Division was to push the base perimeter security out far enough to prevent exactly the sniper fire that was alleged. It is of course possible that a sniper could have penetrated that security , but I was not made aware of it in any briefings I received.

There are only three ways to explain Clinton's story here:

a) She is a baldfaced liar;

b) Her perception of reality is utterly skewed, or

c) Her memory is utterly demented.

In any of these scenarios, Clinton proves herself the wrong person for the presidency. Do we want a liar in office? We've already had two of them for the past 15 years, and that hasn't worked out so well for the country. Do we want someone with no grasp of reality? Again, our current president? Do we want someone with no clear sense of memory? Well, only if we are willing to risk Clinton forgetting that Britain is our ally and ordering the overthrow of Gordon Brown.

Seriously, a story like this sounds sexy in a speech, but even listening to it in a speech, I can't imagine buying into a fantastic load of garbage like this. The Secret Service is never going to put any member of the First Family in a war zone where they are likely to be shot.

I don't know, maybe that little girl reading the poem was actually radioing coordinates to some sniper in the hills, and maybe there were invisible, silent bullets flying around that only Clinton perceived. If this is the case, however, then I think that Democrats ought to go ahead and nominate Obama, while Clinton can continue to live happily in her fantasy world being president. Seriously, Clinton won't be able to tell the difference. (Just make sure the walls are padded.)

Sniper fire? It depends on what the definition of snipe is. People are always sniping at Hillary, for lying about this, or lying about that. Has Hillary ever landed anywhere without the vast right-wing conspiracy and Republican attack machine sniping at her? She's been sniped at all her life. So, sure, when she landed in Bosnia she expected sniper fire, just likes she's running for cover now because of all the sniper fire.

For Pete's sake, DNC, get this wretched Clinton off the national stage, now.

Posted by: Joe Shmoe | March 21, 2008 7:36 PM

I was in Bosnia at that time. The active fighting had stopped, but freshly arrived US Armed Forces considered it a combat zone and followed the appropriate rules of engagement.

That meant sharp descent and ascent during landing and takeoff procedures and mandatory helmets and flak-jackets for all personnel. At the slightest alarm, everyone would duck into shelters, fearing the attack (no US troops were ever attacked during their engagement in Bosnia).

I can only imagine how paranoid US security must have been surrounding Hillary's visit and what impression it left on her and her entourage.

After her visit, Hillary Clinton put her clout behind securing the funding for Bosnian Women's Initiative, which de facto served as the primary funding source for the nascent non-profit sector in Bosnia:

http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/print.php?pid=53015

Strengthening such initiatives had a significant impact on securing peace through economic strengthening of women:

http://www.forbes.com/free_forbes/2005/0418/158.html

If you want to push this story, why not ask Bosnians themselves about how they value her role?

Posted by: MoodSwingeR | March 21, 2008 7:47 PM

I would point out that the Speechwriter is no doubt correct as to what happened. It is SOP in the military to do a tight decent into any combat zone, and I would imagine with the VIP status of Hillary and Chelsea they would have undergone every precaution. AND I am sure they would have been fully briefed to that effect. If there was even a remote danger of Sniper fire, I am sure they would put the First Lady in the armored portion, just to keep her form putting her face in the window. and considering how the President travels abroad, a gunship escort in a war zone seems prudent.
As a reporter, would you agree with my assesment?

Posted by: am4lib | March 21, 2008 8:05 PM

A diagnosis by a psychiatrist would be interesting, to find out if she pathologically incapable of distinguishing truth from fantasy.

Posted by: martin | March 21, 2008 8:42 PM

am4lib: This is not the point. You can be in a war zone, you can have sharp ascents and descents til the cows come home. If you are running from sniper fire, then you are running from sniper fire, and there's no doubt. But if your picture is taken, all smiles, kissing a little girl on the tarmac and you weren't running from sniper fire, ducking, etc. then to say so is.... what? A lie? An embellishment? How, then, afterwards, are we to know when you lie and embellish? Have a little integrity, a little maturity and a little less insecurity. Especially if you are trying to become the President of the United States. Does she think we are stupid?

Do you get it?

Posted by: | March 21, 2008 8:44 PM

Well, it goes without saying, Hillary is a liar here. And frankly I'm disgusted with Michael Dobbs because he didn't give her tens or hundreds of "Pinocchio"s for this. But at the end of the day, Obama has had a crazy, racist, un-American preacher for 20 years, and his wife is un-American too. No wonder people can't decide the nomination yet. It may end up like the 2000 general election between Bush and Gore with hanging chads and one wins the delegates and one gets the popular vote and noone is happy! Probably Hillary will appear in George W. Bush's role in the 2000 election and Obama will portray Al Gore in this re-run of history in miniature.

Posted by: Ed | March 21, 2008 9:11 PM

Regarding Hilary's comment:
"I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."
She is actually putting it lightly here. In fact, my recollection (I was there) was the pilot was shot and Hillary landed the plane herself. The plane was surrounded by enemy fighters and the plane was taking fire. Then Hillary burst out with an M60 belt fed machinegun blazing and took out the enemy fighters one by one in a terrific burst of fire with Chelsea ducking right behind her. She finished a few off with carefully aimed hand grenades (I specifically recall Hillary pulls the pins out with her teeth). At the end of the engagement she had killed almost two hundred enemy and recaptured the airport. This is the kind of woman we need as President.

Martin, I was thinking about a DSM dx for Hillary in light of this story; pathological liar surely comes to mind. Please refer Hillary Rodham Clinton to a qualified professional for assessment and diagnosis).

The Fourth Estate lives! Thanks, Fact Checker. How tawdry it is for Clinton, who has staked her nomination on her experience being superior to Obama's, to claim to have been in a war a la Bush 43 with his flight suit. More and more, she seems like Bush in drag.

Posted by: jhbyer | March 21, 2008 9:48 PM

Don't you think that if you were issued a flak vest and told that the ceremony on the tarmac may have to be cancelled because of sniper fire, and then were moved to the bulletproof cockpit for the landing, that you might feel that there was some danger out there? As it turns out, they were permitted to go ahead with the ceremony. But precautions were taken and warnings given. Just because Sinbad wasn't kept abreast of the entire situation (afterall, the gov't may think it can afford to lose a 2nd rate comedian) it doesn't mean there wasn't something going on that he was not privy to. In light of the updated testimony, I think four Pinochios is a little harsh.

Perhaps SEN. CLINTON should be cut some slack regarding her exaggerations and apparent falsehoods. They may not in fact be outright lies. People with narcassistic and or histrionic personality disorders behave much in the same way and, indeed, such behaviour speaks more to medical, rather than character, issues.

Senator Hilary looks like a boxer very optimistic before a fight. But seems to face an inevitable T.ko in a long run ! Then, he decides, she decides to throw any kind of punches which put her unbalanced,
at the mercy of the people verdict.

Mr Can who I believe will be the nominee and the President of the United States of America! It a matter of judgment over a door's listener in Washington foreign office affairs.

A careful study of the photo accompanying this article clearly shows that Hillary is bending forward to shield the terrified Muslim girl from sniper fire. The apparent lack of response of the others around her is further proof of Hillary's ability to act in times of crisis, even while others are unaware of the danger.

Hillary is such an unashamed liar, it is no point in saying to her, "Shame on you!" The Clintons are shameless, and in their lust to return to the WH they are prepared to destroy Senator Obama, the Democratic Party and our country and the younger generation. President Clinton's horrible slurs on Senator Obama's patriotism, Hillary's endorsement of McCain over Obama, their playing of the gender and race cards, her lies on NAFTA, etc, etc--it is TIME for the party leaders (Gore, Pelosi, Edwards, Biden, etc) to place the Clinton Dynasty in the wastebasket of history and to turn the page for a new America of WE the people, of all colors, creeds, genders, and classes. The Clinton machine is going berserk and taking us all down with it.

THIS JUST IN: The Wright flap has officially fizzled. Despite the media's best efforts to fan the flames of racial mistrust, America has risen above the fray. Congratulations, people. Bad news for the Clinton strategists and their compadres at RushLimbaugh.com. Maybe you can go back to trying to convince people he's a Muslim. Didn't work very well, but you need something to keep yourselves busy as her campaign circles the drain.

"Most voters following the events say they will make no difference in their vote. Seventy percent say the events will make no difference in their vote. Among those who said it would, 14 percent said it makes them more likely to vote for Obama while an equal number said it makes them less likely to support him.

Nearly a quarter of Democrats say the events have made them more likely to back Obama, while a similar number of Republicans say they are now less likely to do so. Three in four independents say the events make no difference, and the remainder are nearly evenly split between those more likely to support him and those less likely to do so."

A GRAND BARGAIN FOR DEMOCRATIC PARTY UNITY

It is clear, with Politico.com reporting that even Hillary's campaign is coming to the rational conclusion that she has--at best--a ten percent chance of winning, that uniting the Democratic Party around Barack Obama is imperative.

Here is a solution that allows everyone to take something from the table, which is what it is going to take for the Party to begin the healing process.

A deal should be struck whereby Hillary agrees to withdraw from the race, and Obama agrees to let most of the Florida and Michigan delegations be seated at the convention.

Hillary could then claim a victory of sorts, as making this the "price" of a dignified exit would allow her to say she is putting the Party's prospects in November above her own ambitions.

It would also help the Democrats win those two states in the general election.

It requires noblesse oblige from both sides.

Obama clearly has it.

And if Hillary takes the deal, it would do a lot for her restoring the family legacy that this ugly campaign, and especially Bill Clinton's role in it, has so tarnished.

hillary's new campaign managers have a new plan.

beginning monday, mar24, they have devised a new introduction for the former first lady to use;

hillary; "im hillary, hillary gump. what is your name?"

the clinton camp hopes that america will sympathize with the bimbo and say, "RUN HILLARY, RUN!!!"

they expect that hillary will yell back, "i'm hillary.. hillary gump. stupid is, as stupid does.."

and with that, they expect her to become president.

personally, i think it is an awesome strategy!!!

who needs florida when you have hillary gump????

hillary, "life is like a box of chocolates.. you never know what you are going to get... but since i was the one that got the box of chocolates, i ate them all. so you don't get any. period. i'm hillary... hillary gump."

Interesting how similar this story is to one that LBJ used in establishing credibility as a young WWII "veteran" for his Senate run in 1948.. As related by Robert Caro in his exhaustive 3 vol. biography of LBJ,he was on a Congressional junket in the South Pacific on a Navy transport plane (inspecting how well supplied our troops were) when he came under fire from the Japanese. Upon his return he was awarded a medal which he displayed at campaign events. Only problem was - Caro reveals - it wasn't a true story. He was in absolutely no danger - there is doubt about whether there was any fire in the area, and the medal application was submitted without any verification by anyone on the plane.
Which, along with Clinton's incredibly high margin in the Rio Grande valley counties in Texas, leads me to the question: what is on Mark Penn's bookshelf? Probably "The Path to Power" by Robert Caro.

Hillary's account must be accurate, if not true. You can see in the photo that she ducked down in time to avoid getting hit by sniper fire! Besides, she never actually said their were bullets in the guns.

You all are acting like she inflates her resume and adds an air of self-importance and dramatic punch to her stories.

I mean, who are you going to believe, the Senator from New York and ex-first lady with 35 years of dedicated public service, who's husband is the the ex-president, or your lying eyes?

Whomever is wondering where our esteemed fellow citizens, svreader, badger3 and others are I direct you to the same place they always are.
The state of denial.
It would be nice if Hillary would make an agreement or do some other honorable thing to suspend her campaign, but she won't.
The only thing that will work is Obama securing enough delegates to win the nomination.
Even if he does Hillary & her supporters will bring suit over; Florida, Michigan, Texas and the caucus states and their results.
Whatever it takes she will do.
Even if it requires freezing the nominating convention with litigation so it would be unable to function.
After all, James Carville believes that Richardson is a Judas participating in a historical reenactment according to the NY Times.
I can only surmise what the Clinton's will do when the are left with no other conclusion that the party & the voters have committed treason in mass.
This is why they are operating in such a way as to deliberately weaken Obama and any down ticket democrat that supports him.
The Clinton's and their supporters have indeed launched a preemptive civil war and there will be no end to it.
Ever.
The Clinton's never forgive or forget and they are keeping book now.

C'mon people- she said that they were running for safety 'with our heads down'. Take a look at that picture- there's a bullet whizzing over her head and she's running for safety with her head down while rescuing and consoling that child at the same time. So she's brave and heroic too!

At least that's probably what the Clinton campaign will tell us next...

I'm just wondering when the Washington Post is going to go through Senator Obama's 11,000 pages of documented service to our nation?

Instead of spending his time and money ridiculing the experience of the former First Lady of the United States, why doesn't Barack Obama just lay his own 11,000 pages and let the media and the voters compare?

All of the battles in Viet Nam,and, all other wars had names.I would like to know the names of the battles that John McCain and the Honor winner fought together.
Did McCain really strap this gut to one of his wings,or what?
Did the NAVY allow John McCain to go into the jungle to fight with the "Grunts"?

Posted by: Jcalex1 | March 22, 2008 7:09 AM

Well, I guess it depends on what the meaning of "sniper fire" is...

Posted by: DeeDee | March 22, 2008 7:32 AM

to zanner1:

Yes, zanner, you might think there was danger, since, when you fly in to, say, London, flak jackets are not part of the landing procedure. But when you got out on to the tarmac to see that nothing was amiss, then you shouldn't say in a speech years later that you were being sniped at and all hell was breaking loose and you had to run, ducking, to the terminal building. To do so is, at best, embellishment, as others here have pointed out, You could also call it lying, a personal characteristic we have already seen in a President for 8 years.

Posted by: | March 22, 2008 7:50 AM

I'm less concerned by the 'sniper fire' comment than by her comment that there was no ceremony. She had access to her own diaries yet didn't check them before saying there was no ceremony. That shows lack of commpetence by her and her campaign staff.

The sniper 'memory' might be a conflation of the reports of snipers in the vicinity and having to duck their he ads for disembarking from the helicopter at another stop.

For once it would be nice to the The Media treat Hillary and Obama the same way they treat their Maverick Saint John of Hagee Endorsement.

They should both get together and throw a little champagne BBQ bash for the press.

McCain might even ask his very rich wife rent out her Sedona "cabin" to those campaigns for the event.

He won't have to worry, because the press loves being in his pocket and, Lord knows, he could sure use the Dems money.

Hillary Clinton and now Bill Clinton - again - are doing the Democratic Party such a disservice. She is being completely dishonest, fake, and disingenuous. Come August, when the party implodes, it will take generations to rebuild. I hope she will be happy with herself. She thinks she's more electable, since she doesn't believe America is ready to vote for a Black president. This is okay, but if she wrestles the nomination away from him, only through the super delegates, I hope the party is ready to deal with the consequences of the disillusioned. Let Barack, like nominees who came before him, Kerry, Gore, Dukakis, Carter, Mondale, win or lose on his own merits.

Everybody had to wear flak jackets going into Tuzla. And, they always flew combat approaches into Tuzla - always.
Also, she flew into Tuzla on a C-17 because it was still a shiny new airplane, and a lot more comfortable than the C130s most (like me) were riding "downrange".

So once again, the press wants to report what it wants to report. Even with amendments to the initial statements by involved parties, you are still claiming she had lied. And of course the Obama followers just don't care about real facts such as Obama's association with Rezko and Wright. What do you expect, the press and Obamaites will always trust the veracity of a blatant Obama supporter such as Sinbad, who obviously has a lot to gain from being in the lime light. Washington Post, I am disappointed in your reporting. You are abetting the Obama camp in Clinton's character assassination. You can bet on it, Obama if he is the nominee, will lose the general election. He is a complete turn off.

I really don't understand this vitriolic level of discourse. After all that the Clintons have done for the Democratic party and this country. How soon we forget their virtues and obsess over their failings.

Frankly, I would have preferred any one of several other candidates, not Clinton or Obama, a candidate that did not have so many negatives. It is the Independents and the Regan Democrats who will decide this race. Neither Obama nor Clinton will get the vote of the hard right, no Democrat is likely to do that.

We need to think carefully whether Obama can win a national campaign for the Presidency. We have become enamored with Obama, an attractive orator who to date has little to recommend him except his appeal to our entirely legitimate desire to move to a better place. But what is the evidence that he can take us there, i.e.,the question is simply stated - can he win the Presidency?

We are seriously underestimating the kind of campaign the hard right will run. These ads may be unfair and vicious, but they will be effective. These ads will cost the Democratic slate 2%-5% points, just enought to elect McCain. Then we can live with a generation of Supreme Court Justices like Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Roberts.

Imagine the series of campaign ads we will be seeing. We will see political ad after political ad, showing Obama walking his children into church, with a voice over calling Rev Wright his spiritual mentor. This will be followed by the Rev.'s rant of "God damn America", ending with Mrs. Obama's unfortunate wording of her "recently discovered" pride in being an American.

Certainly, Clinton is also susceptible to negative ads, but we know what they will be and we know Clinton can handle them. She has done so time after time.

But we are where we are, we have to do the best we can with what we have, Obama or Clinton. It is kidding ourselves to think that the average American will elect to the Presidency someone, who in their view, is tainted as unAmerican, even chosing to raise his precious children under an unAmerican environment.

If we keep on the way we are going, we will live with a continuation of the Bush White House - we will have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

I implore you to stop these attacks and do a little serious thinking about the bigger picture. We need a Democratic President right now. We need this a lot more than we need a Black President or a female President.
