Don't Feed the Ducks
A hearing will be held Nov. 21 on a plan to establish a pilot program to prohibit the feeding of mallard ducks and Canada geese on 174 land parcels near Little Hunting Creek until Nov. 1, 2007. The idea is to reduce the number of waterfowl in the area in part because of a potential health risk.
The Board of Supervisors set the hearing for 4:30 p.m. in the board room of the county Government Center, 12000 Government Center Pkwy.
Update 11/23: The Metro section had an article on this subject on 11/22.

Sweet goodness, you have to be kidding me. Do some research before you start teeing off on things - the story here? There's a guy down in Mt. Vernon who has flocks of geese year round on his property, because some lady from the Greenbrier area keeps coming down and feeding them. So after a few go-arounds involving trespassing etc., failed, this guy asked the County for this code change, and the Mt. Vernon supervisor agreed to bring it to the Board. County staff is actually against it. So believe it or not, the BOS isn't actually aiming to kill anything, and the reason these geese are "crowded" onto this guy's property is because someone from 15 miles away is feeding them there.
Bile like this is NOT productive public discourse, even if it makes you feel better.

Our BOS aim to kill a lot less wildlife than is done in other areas. There is a population explosion of deer and geese.
The WP) had a recent article on squirrels - I am now the fortunate property owner who has 2 hawks that spend a significant amount of time in 2 specific trees near my house. Yesterday, one was dining on a rock of a fine snack consisting of either a vole or mouse. One day it got a squirrel. We also have had a black snake which cleared out stuff habitating near the front porch.
Unfortunately the creatures that can bring down a deer or goose can also get a dog, cat, or person. I am overrun with deer just like the people in DC with rats.
However, I can't whack a deer with a shovel or poison it and stick it in the trash. People and other creatures used to hunt them and eat them.

Shortly before the end of Fairfax as we know it, hopefully God will take revenge on humans who would harm the most vulnerable among us (e.g., children and animals).
To those of you who consider wild animals pests, perhaps you should move out the woods and into a condo or other sterile environment more suited to your "sensibilities."

The Board of Supervisors has set a new low, aiming now for animals crowded out of their normally widespread habitats by supervisors who have paved over the county. First, they killed the crows (in advance of West Nile). Now they are after the geese and ducks. What's next? Poison Providence citizen activists?
