Fed Up With Squirrels? We Want to Hear From You

Ah, it's fall. Our thoughts turn to leaves, apple cider and chilly nights at football games. Wait a minute, what's that sound coming from the attic? Oh no, the squirrels are back, chewing their way through the roof and into the house. What's that I see on the bird feeder? It's those [your adjective here] squirrels eating the bird seed I just put out. Share your favorite squirrel story with us and could you please sign your name, where you live and a daytime phone number so we can consider publishing it in the Fairfax Extra? Thanks

I love squirrels--all animals actually. And I'm oh so tired of all the anti-animal stories in the news. I think you unintentionally promote cruelty to animals.

Why would it matter if the squirrels get some food from the bird feeder? We have destroyed a heck of a lot of oaks around here. What are they supposed to eat?

Leave the animals alone.

I carved a beautiful jack-o-lantern one year and then put it on my back deck. The next morning I looked out my window and a squirrel had eaten the jack-o-lantern's face. It was unsalvageable.
//From Steve Fehr: Kelly, this is good. Did you take a photo by any chance of the jack o lantern? Can you call me at 703-383-5105 to giove me your last name and hometown so I might publish this? Thanks

I have a lot of big old trees in my yard and that is where the squirrels seem to hang out. They're funny, quirky little animals. They have never come in our house (that I know of).

I do have a raccoon tale, though. Last fall, my brother and I went running while the sun was still up. A raccoon was walking along the road in daylight and stopped and growled at us before continuing. Okay, we turned tail, fearing it might be rabid, and we called animal control.

We couldn't find him and neither could animal control. But then we learned what likely happened to the poor angry critter. My neighbor had to cut down a sick tree that was in danger of falling on her house. A raccoon lived inside and was napping when a herd of two-legs started to cut down "his" tree. The raccoon was (in the words of my neighbor) "not happy with them" and after leaving the tree, gave a parting growl (described as "impressive" by my neighbor) and then wandered down the road, where it seems to have encountered a couple of running two-legs that it was not too happy to see just a short time later.

I guess the raccoon found another tree to live in, because no one saw any sign of him again. Okay, we dubbed the raccoon "Foamy," but it was probably a misnomer. (I actually had to have rabies shots years ago, so I don't take rabies lightly. So I was really glad to hear that this was probably just an animal who suddenly found himself homeless and understandably upset at people.)

I would love to see the squirrel o' lantern, too. Is there a photo? Oh, please post it if there is!
