Student Hospitalized With Meningitis

A student at Madison High School in Vienna has been hospitalized with bacterial meningococcal meningitis, Fairfax school officials said yesterday.

Principal Mark Merrell said the school sent a letter to parents Tuesday notifying them of the ill student and suggesting that they watch for certain symptoms in their children.

Merrell declined to disclose other details about the ill student, but said the disease is "not highly contagious."

Symptoms, which can be fatal, include severe headache, high fever, a stiff neck, nausea and vomiting or a rash.
