New Sign at GMU Lights Up Neighbors' Complaints

Is this the Las Vegas Strip or Braddock Road? That's the question some disgruntled neighbors of George Mason University's new two-story electronic animated sign are asking.

The news about the controversy is here.

Perhaps a compromise would be to turn the sign off between 11PM and 5AM. That way, it can serve its purpose to communicate events to the community and not disturb neighbors on Sideburn Dr.

Although the Men's basketball team is coming off a Final 4 run, attendance, while improving, is still lackluster for a school in a large region with a large, local alumni base. The sign is a valuable tool to help advertise games and boost attendance, and needs to stay.

Go Patriots!

Laughable. The sign is not even that bright. These people need to get a life. One of the biggest problems here in NOVA is that we have too many NIMBY's.

What do people expect in FX county (or anywhere) when they buy next to something like George Mason? NIMBY=not in my back yard. Meanwhile, the Patriot Center is booking boxing and our goofy BOS want another arts center (at my expense). The Patriot Center is near Govt Center and it will get revenue from an advertised boxing event, not opera/ballet/sympthony. Perhaps the BOS should check historical gate receipts at Mason before it watses more money.

I'm not suprised by the sign. George Mason seems to have no overall plan for the design and aesthetics of their campus. It's a hodge podge of different architectural styles (70's modern, colonial, etc.). Overall it's a dumpy and ugly campus. No one visits to take in the sights like in Charlottesville or other schools. The sign is just another gaudy thing to put up. Beats the old brown/steel signs, I guess.

Love the sign. Wish we had a couple more around the campus.
