Allen, Webb Debate: What's Your Take?
Sen. George Allen (R-Va.) and Democratic challenger Jim Webb squared off in a televised debate last night. You have seen the debate, seen or heard radio and TV and read about this in the old fashioned newspaper or on the web. Forget all that and tell us what Focus on Fairfax readers think. How did the candidates fare? And what did the debate do for people trying to figure out whom to vote for? One thing: no ad hominem attacks.

I was disappointed that no questions were asked about Allen's failure to disclose stock options, esp. now that Allen's claim that the options were "worthless" appears to be false.

If Allen is as careless with his duties as he is in complying with disclosures, why should we trust him?
I'll vote for Webb. This disclosure thing did it for me. What's next?

Everything we've seen up to now from George Allen goes to integrity: "macaca", "n-word", lying about his Jewish heritage, "casting aspersions", failing to disclose stock options...
The guy even winked at the camera when he apologized for macaca! How smarmy can one person be?
Then you look at a guy like Webb who couldn't tell a lie to save his life. He's not polished, but he'll also never let the Bush administration or party leaders of either party push him around.
I'd rather have a thoughtful hero representing me than a smooth guy without any integrity.

I'll be honest and say I thought this was a very close debate. I guess, in the end, it depends on what you're looking for. If you want a classical "politician" for a Senator, Allen's your guy. But Webb was clearly the smartest guy in the room. I'm personally a little sick and tired of "politicians." I want a leader. That's why Webb has my vote.

Jim Webb reminds a lot of Gerry Connolly.

Mr. Allen ran over his time repeatedly, which was rude and arrogant... especially considering that all he was doing was repeating the same tired talking points over and over, whether they fit the question or not. Mr. Webb, on the other hand, gave thoughtful answers to the actual questions. He did have to call Allen on his egregious misrepresentations of Webb's position on taxes, and I thought Webb could have done a better job there, but "The bell rang, George," pretty well sums it up.

I thought that Sen Allen appeared to have a much better understanding of the issues facing the country. Webb did not seem to understand the political realities of being a junior Democrat in the Senate. If elected, he will be forced to go the way Sen Cleland did in Georgia and follow liberal policies he doesn't like -- then he will be a one term Senator and Virgina will have lost all of that seniority.

This is one of those races that I will decide when I am in the voting booth. I see both candidates as lackluster, and now have to decide if I side with experience or go with the unknown behind door number 2. Right now, I am leaning slightly toward Allen. I am not sure what I find sillier - Allen's recent gaffs (which were bad ones) or Webb's past, mysogynistic comments regarding women in military academies (which I take person offense at). Both of these guys have stuff to apologize for. Too bad there is not a door number 3.

Absent a door number 3, I have decided to vote for Allen. All nonsense and gaffs aside, I have concluded that Allen is the better candidate. Neither guy makes me happy. Considering the foolish nonsense both men have spewed, I believe Webb still needs to apologize very directly and very loudly to military women and academy graduates about his comments and admit in no uncertain terms that he was WRONG. And I want to hear "I WAS WRONG," straight out of his mouth and without any political schmoozing of it. No prefaces, no excuses, etc.

I thought both men fared well, but Webb convince me now that he was less a polished politican than Allen. Webb's answers seemed thoughtful, Allen's seemed canned. I'll be voting for Webb based on this debate.
