Ronald W. Koch, 62, a longtime member of the Fairfax County Planning Commission, is suing three Fairfax County police officers in federal court, accusing them of assaulting him while he was working as a process server. Koch said that the incident, which occurred at the Sully District Station two years ago, has shaken his faith in the county government and he will not accept reappointment to his government post in January. The details are in this article from today's Metro section.

I have known Mr. Koch for 15 years. I have always known him to be fair and honest. He has served our community with honor and dignity. I am outraged at the verdict and disappointed in our judicial system. It is time for a change in our leadgership. It is not nice to say things about people that are not true. We all need to take responsibility for our actions, not matter what position we hold.

I'm sure we'll get to hear all sides of the story when this goes to court.
Mr. Koch isn't the only one whose faith in the county government has been shaken. I hope he'll reconsider stepping down. Having a few skeptics appointed to sit up at the front of the room in the Government Center is not a bad thing. The whole experience probably has taught him a level of empathy with frustrated, regular citizens that few appointees can rise to.
I hope this situation works out well and fairly for all involved.
