UPDATE 10/22: Fisher on Fairfax Senate Race

Updated 10/22
Metro opinion columnist Marc Fisher yesterday took a look at the race for state Senate in Fairfax, noting that the candidates' party-affiliations aren't easy to deduce by their rhetoric alone.

According to this story from today's Metro section, not much distinguishes the Republican and Democratic candidates for the 34th District seat in the Virginia Senate when it comes to issues important to gay voters. That both parties' candidates are flying the gay rights flag is seen by some as a further sign of Northern Virginia's move from conservative toward progressive politics.

Gays should stop and think before voting this November because their votes have far-reaching ramifications. While JMDD may call herself a RINO, at the end of the day, when committee chairs are decided, judges appointed, and election districts decided, she's a Republican. This is the party that, very soon after coming into power, tried to remove Judge Rosemarie Annunziata from the Court of Appeals in Virginia because of a decision she had written that said, if I recall correctly, that a lower court judge erred when he gave the father custody of the children because the mother's lesbian relationships were immoral, but the father's shacking up with his kids and his girlfriend weren't. Is this really the party you want to keep in power?
