These new taxes are nothing to what I found out yesterday (1/9/2008). Guess what!
Delegate Vivian Watts (D, Alexandria) introduced a Bill (HB472) for a local piggyback income tax for any city or county in Virginia. Citizen approval of the new tax is not required for the tax to be levied. All that is required by the Bill is that local legilators must approve the new levy, assuming her Bill passes the General Assembly as now written.
The tax rate, accourding the Bill, is either .5% or 1% of income (adjusted gross income for the technical folk). That could easily amount to $1,000 or more in new taxes per year, beginning in 2009.
If you are interested in this, go to legis.state.va.us and look up HB472.
Representative Watts' email address is DelVWatts@house.va.us.
Want a shock? Ask her who recommended this tax to her. Sit down first, before you ask.
Sit this one out if you wish. But, if you do, be prepared for a piggyback income tax, big time.
