UPDATE 2/15: School Board May Reject Some Proposed Cuts

The news out of last night's School Board meeting indicates that the elimination of some programs and services which the board was mulling may not happen.

The Fairfax County School Board will vote tonight on what this article from today's Fairfax Extra calls "the most austere budget in a decade." Parents have widely decried a variety of cuts in programs and services which the budget calls for.

What am I missing here? $2.3 billion is "austere"?
I remember the time, not long ago, when the budget was $1.3 billion. Now it's $2.3 billion. Austere?
