Two Other DST Fixes

Two quick updates to last week's Help File item about getting computers to recognize the new Daylight Saving Time period effective this year:

* One reader was having issues with her copy of Outlook after applying Microsoft's Windows patches. The answer was to download a separate, Outlook-only update. (Remind me: Why does this program need its own separate clock in the first place?)

* Another reader wanted to suggest another way to get older versions of Mac OS X updated for the new DST rules (Apple is only providing updates for OS X 10.3 and 10.4). He wrote:

/etc/localtime is a link to a file in /usr/share/zoneinfo. All that would need to be done is for the user to go to http://www.twinsun.com/tz/tz-link.htm and download the latest zonedata (which will contain the fixes), and replace the /usr/share/zoneinfo directory on their computer.

I haven't tested that remedy--in fact, I'm not clear on what file you're supposed to download from that site--and I strongly suspect that most Mac users won't want to monkey around with the command line as this user describes. But if you're willing to plug ahead with this remedy... I wish you the best of luck!

OK, Rob you asked and I'll remind you: Outlook needs to handle time differently because it's setup to adjust for appointments in different time zones--which means it may need to deal with numerous time zones (all with different rules regarding daylight savings time or the lack of it) at any one time. It's only necessary for the OS to handle one time zone at a time.
