Commuters Wanted

I'm on a personal quest today. I want to take as many Washington area commutes as possible, so I need your help. I need to talk to any and everyone who is willing to let me (or possibly another Post reporter) ride along with them and write about it. If you're willing to be one of these superselect, ultracool commuters, please send me an e-mail at ginsbergs@washpost.com.

In other news, I'm interested in how your 100-degree commutes are going. My wife and I managed to walk almost the whole way in the shade today, which means minimal sweat. That's a good thing.

Any story you ran about my commute would be riddled with "(expletive deleted)" and might well be unreadable :-)

I live close and go in early; it takes 20 min. Maybe you could do mine and dramatically show the benefits of living close.

I've begged you to commute with me. I guess a Manassas to Reston comute isn't what interests folks.

This week I have had to endure three different days with different accidents scattered along I-66 and Fairfax County Parkway. Talk about quick thinking on how to get to work without sitting on my clutch. I found out that Rt. 28 is only bad until you get to Westfields and then it opens up nicely. I have been doing this drive all week and I can get to work in record time. Going home is always another story. Actually, I wish you could ride with me from Reston to Manassas. Going home is always worse.

You could do my husband's commute from Herndon (Rt. 28 area) to downtown DC. It goes like this: we ride together to Herndon/Monroe park-and-ride, where I drop him off and then continue down the Toll road solo to my job in Tysons. He gets on a Fairfax Connector bus from Herndon-Monroe to West Falls Church Metro. Then, he boards the Metro to get from there to McPherson Square. Let me know if you want to accompany him and/or profile him!

I run across Route 29 every morning to catch the first of two buses taking me from my home in Calverton to my internship in Bethesda. The commute runs about one or two hours each way, and while the people on the bus are pretty chill, the traffic can be an abomination. Please, join me! I don't think a lot of Post readers have ever seen the inside of a Metrobus.

Come on and take a ride with Boss. I live in MD near Branch Ave, and I drive to Mclean. I'll even let you pick the route. WB, 66, or GW Pkwy....

MHE,

With the time it would save you to have your husband's body in your car on the Toll Road (read HOV2 lane), you can take him all the way to the WFC Metro directly.

Ok, Stick, solve this riddle. As a consultant, I work in Crystal City, Oxon Hill, Rockville, Arlington, New Carrolton, Chantilly, Herndon, and DC. My husband works in Crystal City, Quantico, and Reston.

Where should we live that's close to work? Oh, and affordable with good schools and shopping and all that. We haven't found a magic central location, but perhaps we can make it a little contest?

Drove to Merrifield the other day from Laurel. Traffic moving ok. Driving home, traffic was jammed from Cabin John to EXIT 34. Major highway in the USA slims down to TWO lanes. Seems there is an exit there that says exit only for about a mile. Will NEVER go that route again. TWO LANE HIGHWAY, unreal.

My commute is pretty straight forward, RideOn bus to Grosvenor Metro and on to Metro Center. Usually takes about 45 minutes if all the connections go perfectly, which is usually in the morning. Afternoon is usually a different story. Either Metro is delayed (announced or unannounced) or the RideOn bus had broken down and doesn't show up or breaks down in the middle of the ride home. Then it can be a long walk home. Maybe you would get lucky the day you ride with me.

Hey Steve. ..may I call you Steve? Anyhoo, I saw that you're looking to brave the rapids (or the SLOWpids in my case) and indulge in a commute or two. I live in Waldorf, MD and work in Downtown DC. I ride in on the Keller commuter bus and spend between 3-4 hours per day (or more on rare occasions) traveling to and fro, hither and yon along the 295 slow boat to downtown.

If you were to join us in our commute aboard the Keller, it would shine some much-needed light on our plight. You see, Steve, Waldorf is exploding with new housing developments and, sadly, more commuters. Unfortunatley, the bus lines have gone unchanged. Every morning is less an adventure to be experienced than an ordeal to be survived. Sound appealing to you? Whetting your commuter appetite are we? Then, come on down! You're the next contestant on the Ride From...Hello, I have work to do! Gotta run. Hope to see you on the bus.

I take the MARC from Baltimore to Union Station then to Farragut North. The MARC trains have been so full and delayed and the Metro has been even crazier. Less delays would bring me from my wits end. :)
