Lunch by Metro
I would love to share some super exciting transportation news with you guys, but it's a hot Friday in the middle of July and there just isn't any at the moment.
Soooo. That gives us time to do something fun. And critical. Like finding a good place for me (and you) to have lunch.
I'm hereby challenging you guys to come up with the best lunch joints within one block of a Metro station -- any Metro station. The idea is that you could run out of your office, get on Metro and grab a good lunch so quickly that your boss wouldn't even know you had gone. I sit about four inches from my boss, so these will have to be really good. So let's hear 'em ...
In other news, I will be spending next week focusing exclusively on traffic issues in the three blocks between our rental and the beach in Cape May. The Post's new Dr. Gridlock, Bob Thomson, will fill in while I'm gone.

Kelly's Irish Times off of Fst and North Capitol. Get there early if you're in a time crunch. Good mix of foods; not just Irish cuisine. Try the Buffalo Chicken tenders, they're made from scratch (not frozen). Burgers are great too. Try everything.
Remember though: this place is a pub, not Fridays.

The newly reopened food court at 13th & F St. by Metro Center is a quick stop. With a little more time try Chef Geoff on the same corner or Red Sage on 14th & F Sts NW. Good eats all around!

opps...forgot...it's Union Station Metro.
of course, Union station itself has plenty of palces to eat fast or nicely. For something else different, Thunder Grill is good, but pricy.

As Mia noted, there are some good places at the Shops at National Place--Five Guys and Moe's Southwest Grill are in there.
Potbelly's has two locations within a block of Metro stops--one at 14th & New York (a block from McPherson Square) and one at 11th & F (a block from Metro Center).
The pizza at Cafe Cantina/Pizza Pino on G Street between F and G (Metro Center) is pretty good. Very strange to have a place that sells Mexican food and pizza like that, but the pizza is pretty good. (After the burritos gave me the trots twice, I stopped buying them.)

Ample eating choices here so I don't really need to get on a metro, but... I can jump on a red line train to Woodley Park and be back at my desk in minutes w/ hummus or some other delicious treat Lebanese Taverna.

There's always the GW Hospital cafeteria (Foggy Bottom). ;-)

K Street Burrito Cart outside of Farragut North

Jump off at Gallery Place. You have McDonald's if that is your gastronomic choice, Chipotle, Clyde's. Across the Street, Fudrucker's, Three Brothers, Legal Seafood, Ruby Tuesday. For the best part you can call ahead for Ruby Tuesday, Legal Seafood and Clyde's.
Bon Apetit.

Barracks Row, (8th St from I to F) is about a block from Eastern Market (Blue & Orange lines). Martys, Finn McCools, Belga Cafe', Starfish Grill(?)

From the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro you have Rosa Mexicano, Jaleo, District Chophouse, and La Tasca. All very yummy!

I miss this place now that I work out of Tysons. Not even sure of the name but it's the "Turkey Place" next to Julia's Empenada's about a block from McPherson Square (Vermont and K maybe?). My mouth is watering just thinking about it.

Ella's Pizza is also at Gallery Place - literally across the street from the 9th Street entrance. Also good for happy hours - free pizza!
Banana Cafe is another great Eastern Market choice - not sure if it's one or two blocks from the Metro.

International Square off the Farragut West stop - a Metro stop leads right into it.

Joe Theisman's, directly across from the King Street Metro. Just down the block from it, the Perfect Pita!

Pentagon City: Johnny Rockets just in the entrance to the mall. You barely leave the metro and it's right there. Used to make that pit stop at least once a week for a #12 with cheese. So yummy!!!

I love Mexicali Blues in Clarendon (and then you have to stop at Lazy Sundae).
But with 15 minutes between trains at lunch time, can anyone really "grab a good lunch so quickly that your boss wouldn't even know you had gone"? ;)

Teaism. The location nearest me is at Archives/Penn Quarter Metro on the yellow and green. I love to get a chicken bento box take out and eat by the Navy Memorial fountains. Their Lafayette Sq. and Dupont Circle locations make it easy on several lines.

Gallery place, head down the road away from the 'gate', hang a right at the corner opposite the station in the same block, China Town Express.
Hand made noodles and excellent lunch special. A lot of food for little money.

Two places:
- Vie de France restaurant at L'Enfant Plaza (love their barley soup)
- Cafeteria at American Indian Museum (pricey, but the buffalo specials are great, and great chocolate chip cookies when they're available)

What some of you think constitutes a "good lunch" is horrifying. Ruby Tuesday? Clydes? Banana Cafe? Vie de France? Mc-Freakin'-Donalds?
Somewhere, Tom Sietsema is geting the shakes, and he doesn't even know why.

-Einstein Bagels, immediately next to the north exit from Silver Spring Metro.
-Tons of places within a block of Wheaton Metro.
-Shanghai Palace just down from Staples, close to Glenmont Metro. Mongolian Lamb particularly recommended.

The Washington Navy Yard Metro Stop, New Jersey Avenue escalator. 1100 NJ Ave. is directly across the street. On the far side of the building are a Subway sandwich shop and a Five Guys Burger place. I think you can call or email your order at the Subway. Don't know about the FG, but that would make it really quick.

Soak in the funk at Ben's Chili Bowl - that Washington tradition across the street from the U Street metro.
Talking Chinatown, as we were - thanks to the person who actaully suggested a chinese restaurant. Please people - lets have more Cinese choices ... or there won't be a Chinatown. My favourite is Eat First, in that first block next to the Chinatown Gate.
For atmosphere, go to the Building Musuem. You could bring/buy a sandwich and sit in the wonderful atrium. Red Line to Judiciary Square, Police Memorial Exit.

Most definitely Java Green on 19th just above K!!! Just exit Farragut West at the 18th and I exit and you only have about one block and a half to walk.

California Tortilla next to Courthouse metro. It's even faster if you call ahead. And they have a million hot sauces . . . yummmmmmmmmm.
