Traffic Advisories for the Week
Here are some things that could affect your local travels this week:
-- Tennis Tournament: The annual tournament at the FitzGerald Tennis Center is underway through Sunday. Watch for the traffic in the blocks north of 16th Street NW and Colorado Avenue. You can find a full list of the District's parking restrictions here. There's a free shuttle from the Van Ness Metrorail station or you can take the S 2 and S 4 Metrobuses on 16th Street.
-- Paving project on I-270: Northbound and southbound I-270 between Route 189 (Falls Road) and Muddy Branch Road, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Friday. Crews are completing working on the local lanes. Northbound ramp closures to begin on or about Aug. 3 for grinding and resurfacing.
-- Paving project on I-95: The other big one in Maryland. It's between Route 32 and Route 100 in Howard County. Expect double-lane closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Alternatives in that corridor are Route 29, the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Route 1.
-- Grosvernor Lane Bridge: The bridge over I-270 closed on July 14 and is scheduled to reopen Aug. 29. Your local alternatives for getting between Old Georgetown Road and Rockville Pike are Tuckerman Lane and West Cedar Lane. There's still a walkway open on the bridge for bikers and pedestrians. [Maryland's Department of Transportation has reworked the detour signs to make them clearer, says spokesman Chuck Gischlar. Also, he says, the demolition work on the bridge is likely to be completed by the end of today].
-- Georgia Avenue: Paving project between Route 586 (Veirs Mill Road) and Randolph Road, single lane closures Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
-- Capital Beltway interchange: The Maryland State Highway Administration is beginning to rebuild the ramp from the inner loop to southbound Kenilworth Avenue. In the current setup, drivers heading from the inner loop to southbound Kenilworth Avenue must merge quickly before the exit to Greenbelt Road. The project will relocate the inner loop ramp closer to the traffic signal, for a longer and safer transition before Greenbelt Road. The project also will slightly widening northbound Kenilworth Avenue between the Capital Beltway exits, providing another lane to safely merge traffic to the Beltway. Between now and completion next spring, expect single-lane closures along the Beltway and Kenilworth between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
-- Douglass Bridge: The MTA's 905 commuter bus won't stop at the Branch Avenue Metro station anymore because not enough riders wanted to get off their and take the train downtown. The two-month shutdown of the bridge for rehabilitation remains on schedule, DDOT says. Traffic has been real slow on I-295, especially around the main detour route at the 11th Street Bridge.
-- Wilson Bridge: You'll find a full listing of the bridge project's traffic restrictions for the week on this page.
I-66 Widening: You'll find a status report on the lane widening project in Gainesville on this page.
-- Chesapeake Bay Bridge: Anytime you want the latest on traffic over the bridge, call 877-BAYSPAN.
-- Tydings Bridge: This one is important to long-distance travelers heading north on I-95. The Tydings Bridge is the one over the Susquehanna River northeast of Baltimore. Workers will be installing expansion joints on the bridge that will require these northbound lane closures through September: continuous single lane closure Sunday 11 p.m. through Friday 5 a.m.; double lane closure Monday through Friday from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. Southbound work should begin in late fall.
-- Falls Church Paving: A summertime paving program is starting this week. Work gets underway tonight on West Broad Street and continues tomorrow night. Between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., one lane in each direction will remain open while the paving is going on.

You can either use US40 and still pay the toll. Just take any exit before the bridge and go south/east towards the Bay. Or if you want to go toll free northbound, you can take any exit and meander north to US1 and go across the Conowingo Damn. Then continue north until MD279 (at a Y intersection) and take that all the way to DE. Then you can take South College Avenue south to I95 and bypass the Delaware toll booths..

Dr. Gridlock, you've missed the new road construction on the inner loop after Old Georgetown Rd. Could you tell us what MD SHA is doing this time around?
They've been setting up midday roadwork blocking the left lane in this area for at least the last week; the effects it has on traffic out of Tysons Corner are immense at nearly any hour after 12noon.
As we all know, this stretch of the inner loop is only three lanes, then the right most lane of three becomes the "exit only" lane for 355-South about a 1/2 mile beyond the construction area. In essence, the beltway is reduced to one "through lane" in this stretch during periods when the left lane is closed for the construction. (The right lane is the exit only lane and the left lane is closed, leaving only the center lane with, of course everyone being forced to merge at some point into this center lane.)
Yesterday before 1pm (a Monday), delays on the inner loop began before the Dulles Toll Rd to get through this workzone. Here is a better example of why MD SHA needs to revert to nighttime closures, especially in a congested area where morning rushhour runs past 10am and evening rushhour starts by early afternoon. There is virtually no time window for midday roadwork anymore.

Can you tell me when the repaving on Rte. 28 in Manassas is going to be done. I came back from vacation last night to find the road was being chewed up and only one lane each way got by. Frankly, that road was in better shape than most on/off ramps in the area.

Not sure I am understanding the Tydings Bridge closure. Does this mean:
- all 3 lanes are open on weekends from Saturday 6 am through Sunday 11 pm
- Sunday 11 pm - Friday 5 am there will be at least one lane closed at all times
- Weeknights there will be two lanes closed.
And is there any alternative to this bridge, or do we just have to sit in traffic?
Thanks
