Progress Today on Route 28
Good news out on Route 28 near Dulles Airport: The new partial interchange at Innovation Avenue is scheduled to open today.
You commuters who use Route 28 to get north and south everyday know the much-hated traffic light at the avenue was taken down over the summer while work proceeded to convert that junction from an intersection to an interchange, or at least half an interchange on the eastern side.
The two new ramps, which cost a total of $5.9 million, took three months to build. The one that will carry traffic from Innovation to northbound Route 28 will open in the late morning and the one from northbound Route 28 to Innovation will open later in the day. The construction-related detour to Route 606 will be done.
Someday, when the money and the demand are there, a full interchange will be built. This is all part of the Route 28 corridor improvements, a public-private partnership that began in 2002.

Getting rid of that traffic light was fantastic... I don't think I've ever seen such an immediate improvement in a route I regularly drive. Now Frying Pan Rd. and Willard Rd., please.

The Willard Rd interchange should have been done 2 years ago. So many other interchanges (including Innovation Avenue) should have been lower priority. The problem it seems was with land acquisition near Willard Rd.
Every afternoon the delay south on 28 to get through the signal at Willard Rd begins somewhere back near the Sully Historic Site (before Route 50). With the controlled access highways already in place, I don't see why Willard Rd's signals couldn't be taken out right now, interchange or no interchange. Folks can still access Route 28 from either the interchange at Walney/Westfields Blvd (1 mile south) or Route 50 (1 mile north). And there is a good selection of secondary routes paralleling Route 28 for traffic to get from their origin to the Route 28 entrance ramps at either Route 50 or Westfields.

That one really blows my mind. I have numerous ways of bypassing that light and traffic, don't you think VDOT should just close down that intersection? But they waited way too long and that big office complex is going up across from the Expo Center and getting the land together will be tough.
I wonder if there is anything we can do about Manassas though. Between New Braddock and Manassas Drive. Too many people turning left and blocking 28 for those trying to go straight that it backs up all that way.
I guess the only way around it is to bulldoze most of that area but would that be too much of a loss? Even the ice cream place should go too, when I stop at one of those old-time ice cream shops, I expect ice cream and not soft-serve.
I just don't think there is anywhere to build a bypass of that area.

Sorry to burst the previous poster's "bubble" but there is one big reason why the Willard Rd signals will not be removed until an interchange is done: The Dulles Expo Center.
Route 28 to Willard Rd is the main way to access Dulles Expo, and its the directions the center gives to guests, show hosts, etc. (I agree, there are alternatives but the Dulles Expo Center will not let it happen.)
PS: When I'm going south on 28 in the afternoons, its easy to bypass the LONG waiting lines approaching Willard. Exit 28 for Route 50 West, then make a left on Lee Rd. Follow that to Stonecroft Blvd and even Westfield Blvd and Braddock Rd. Aside from the congestion at the left turn from Route 50 to Lee Rd, this route saves 10 minutes. (Its about a 15 minute wait on average to get through the Willard Rd signal at rushhour, 15 minutes northbound in the AM and 15 minutes southbound in the PM.)

Dr. Gridlock, Aside from the recurring congestion in Georgetown, the Route 28 and Waxpool Rd debacle of an interchange has got to be one of the most blogged topics on your page.
Could you look into this interchange with VDOT?
The one lane left exit from Route 28 north to Waxpool Rd west is a complete nightmare EVERY afternoon/evening between about 3:30pm and 7:30pm. Simply put, what was VDOT thinking in building a one lane ramp for ALL the exiting traffic to westbound Waxpool? To the contrary, in doing the opposite movement, traffic from eastbound Waxpool to 28 south has two wide, long acceleration lanes that feed traffic very smoothly into the main lanes of 28 South. (The second right exit from 28 north to westbound Waxpool is NOT used because it just puts folks further upstream in waiting for the traffic signal at Pacific Blvd.) Just as the previous poster notes, why construct all these fancy, unsightly flyover ramps that dump into a set of outdated traffic signals 200 feet from the end of the ramp? VDOT thinks this is good for traffic flow? Yes, through traffic on Route 28 benefits to some degree, but forget about the nightmare on Waxpool every afternoon from Route 28 to Ashburn Village Blvd.

You all know there are TWO exits to go west on Waxpool, right??? The flyover is one (from the left lane), and there is also a loop ramp that exits 28 in the right lane that is the 2nd. I drive by this eveynight and see everyone stuck in the left lane; meanwhile the right exit is almost empty. I'm not an expert, but it seems that the problem is not the interchange, but all the signals on Waxpool. That's what is backing everything up in rush hour. Can VDOT do something with the signal timings to give more green to Waxpool traffic?

Now if they could just fix the Northbound Route 28 near Waxpool cluster-f every evening that's been previously discussed in these posts. Oh, wait, it's VDOT. Giant shiny new interchange dumping into a byzantine series of traffic lights that start 200 feet away from the ramps outlet is SOP throughout NoVA.
