Rain Delay
The rainy weather has forced the District to postpone the reopening of Foxhall Road NW. The Department of Transportation had hoped that traffic would be flowing by today.
The new schedule calls for the roadway between Reservoir Road and Nebraska Avenue to reopen after the morning rush on Wednesday. DDOT spokesman Erik Linden said in a statement that the department hopes crews can resume work on Foxhall once the rain tapers off on Saturday.
On Thursday, I put up an advisory about weekend lane shifts planned for Beltway lanes near the Wilson Bridge, but then had to take it back when project managers looked at the extended forecast and decided the rain would make it impossible to complete the work this weekend. That's been rescheduled for next weekend, although there will be some lane closures late Sunday night and early Monday to prepare for the realignment.
What other effects has the rain had on the roads and transit systems? I was driving in Fairfax, Loudoun and Montgomery counties yesterday for The Post commuter page feature we're planning on nearby scenic drives. How scenic could that have been yesterday, you ask? It was great. I popped in a CD of classic ghost stories and that created a great mood for driving places like Sligo Creek Parkway, Whites Ferry Road and the Snickersville Turnpike. Felt like I had Ichabod Crane along with me.
But back to reality: Drivers were going way to fast on roads slicked with rain and falling leaves, where the visibility was limited. Be careful out there.

They are doing some gas main work on Cathedral Ave NW and Woodley Road NW...and they completely stopped work during the rain. Of course this did not stop Parking Enforcement from ticketing the 7AM to 4PM Emergency No Parking zone this work created...but we wouldn't want to interfere with the revenue stream to the city now would we?

So, does the rain mean DDOT got *no* work done on Foxhall? Because 3 days of rain apparently created 3 days of delay. I can understand some problems, but usually construction crews can work in the rain.
Also, as bad as DC drivers are in the rain generally, it's only worse when they haven't had to do so for 90 days.
