Traffic and Transit Advisories

The center of attention for travelers this weekend -- or the place to avoid -- is in downtown Washington.

Downtown Street Closings
The International Monetary Fund and World Bank are holding annual meetings this weekend. Here's how that will affect drivers and pedestrians.

Beginning at 8 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Sunday, these streets will be closed:

-- Pennsylvania Avenue, NW between 17th Street and 20th Street NW

-- 19th Street, NW between I ("Eye") Street and F Street NW

-- H Street NW between 17th Street and 20th Street NW

From 8 p.m. on Friday to 9 p.m. Monday, these streets will be closed:

-- 18th Street NW between F Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW

-- 19th Street NW between F Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW

-- 20th Street NW between F Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW

-- F Street NW between 17th Street and 20th Street NW

Vehicular access to the 1700 through 2000 blocks of Pennsylvania Avenue NW, the 1700 and 1800 blocks of H Street NW , and the 800 block of 19th Street NW is tentatively scheduled to be available for morning rush traffic on Monday. (I'll update that if something changes.)

No parking Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight:
-- Wisconsin Avenue NW - from South Street north to Q Street
-- Pennsylvania Avenue and M Street corridor from 23rd Street ( Washington Circle ) all the way west to Key Bridge

Only pedestrians with business in the area and proper identification will be permitted access to the following locations:

-- 600, 700 and 800 blocks of 18th Street, 19th Street, and 20th Street NW

-- 1700, 1800, 1900, and 2000 blocks of G Street NW

-- 1900 block of H Street NW

Weekend Work on Metrorail
Track maintenance and rail car testing on the Yellow and Green lines this weekend will create delays while trains share tracks. Here's a link to the Metro announcement on the various disruptions.

Metrobus Detours
The dowtown meetings, the Howard University homecoming parade on Saturday and the Columbia Pike festival on Sunday will force Metro to detour some bus routes. Here's a link to the Metro announcement.

Centreville Road
Two new lanes opened Friday on Centreville Road in Fairfax County. The $29 million, 1.6-mile widening between Metrotech Drive and McLearen Road was funded by the county. Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2008 to widen Centreville Road between West Ox Road and Frying Pan Road. The lanes opened today and the upcoming widening will provide a continuous four-lane roadway between Chantilly and Herndon.

Virginia Interchange Underway
Construction has begun on the Route 28 and Frying Pan Road interchange in Fairfax County. The $24.5 million project, last of 10 interchanges either built or under construction as part of the Route 28 public-private partnership, is scheduled to be done by fall 2009. Some drivers have complaints about the order in which the interchanges were tackled and some others about specific results, but overall, the Route 28 program is a great improvement for travelers.

Kenilworth Avenue
The District is rebuilding Kenilworth Avenue NE between Foote Street and Lane Place. Work has begun on the southbound Kenilworth Avenue Service Road and probably will continue through November. The Service Road is closed for reconstruction of intersections at Lane Place and 42nd Street NE, and local traffic is being detoured. But traffic on southbound Kenilworth Avenue is not affected by this, and the exit for Burroughs Avenue remains open.

Festival Alert
Arlington police are closing South Dinwiddie Street between Columbia Pike and South 9th Street from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 21) for the "Taste of the Pike" food festival. The festival, next to the Arlington Mill Community Center, runs from noon to 7 p.m.

Whitehurst Freeway
The northbound Whitehurst Freeway ramp off Potomac Freeway was scheduled to be closed from Monday through Tuesday, but the repair work has been postponed and the ramp will remain open.

"continuous four-lane roadway between Chantilly and Herndon"?

As long as you don't count that half mile long 2 lane section between Frying Pan and West Ox. That route won't be great unless they can widen that stretch.

Thanks for the updates. It would have been nice if the traffic reporters reminded drivers of the closing around the World Bank this morning. I didn't realize that the streets were closed until I tried to get to work. I would have gone a different way had I known in advance.

It also would have been nice if Metro had communicated how the buses (e.g. 16Y, 3Y) were going to be detoured this morning.

"As long as you don't count that half mile long 2 lane section between Frying Pan and West Ox. That route won't be great unless they can widen that stretch."

Let's read the paragraph again:

Construction is scheduled to begin in late 2008 to widen Centreville Road between West Ox Road and Frying Pan Road. The lanes opened today and the upcoming widening will provide a continuous four-lane roadway between Chantilly and Herndon.

It's coming, just not next year.

"It would have been nice if the traffic reporters reminded drivers of the closing around the World Bank this morning."

Must depend on which traffic reporter you listen to, as I heard it mentioned several times on WTOP. Doesn't affect me directly because I don't go over there, but I did wonder if there might be spillover traffic elsewhere in DC (there wasn't, at least not that I experienced).

Dr Gridlock, To add to your list, the E Street Expressway connection from the Roosevelt Bridge/I-66 was closed as of about 10am this morning.

This made traffic even worse because Constitution really became the de-facto east-west detour for all the traffic trying to move off I-66 and head east into the West End, Foggy Bottom and GWU.

E Street Expressway was open at 8:45 this morning...
