Traffic and Transit Alerts
Connecticut Avenue
Watch out this evening around the Uptown Theater, where there's a special event that will restrict driving and parking on the southbound side, heading toward downtown Washington. The restriction will be between Macomb Street and Ordway Street from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Veterans Day
Monday is the federal and local holiday, and Metrorail is back to treating it that way too, after experimenting last year with weekday service on a few Monday holidays. The transit authority found that there was not enough demand to justify the cost of providing full weekday train service.
Track Work Closing Stations
Metro will use the long holiday weekend to perform some extensive track work, which will close the Huntington and Eisenhower Avenue stations for the weekend. They will be shut from 9 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday,
Virginia Transportation Planning
The Commonwealth Transportation Board, the statewide policy-making panel, has scheduled its annual meeting for Northern Virginians to comment on projects that can be included in the six-year plan, the basic guide to what Virginia is committed to building. The moderated public meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the board auditorium at the Fairfax County Governmental Center, 12000 Government Center Parkway. There is no pre-registration. People who want to speak can sign up at the door. Fairfax County Governmental Center
Route 28 in Frederick County
The project to replace the Route 28 (Tuscarora Road) bridge over Tuscarora Creek should be finished in the middle of this month, weather permitting, says the Maryland State Highway Administration.
Canal Road NW
The District Department of Transportation hopes to wrap up the widening project near the Key Bridge and Whitehurst Freeway by the end of November, says Erik Linden, spokesman for the Department. What you should be seeing, he says, are a smoother roadway, new striping, a new brick median, improvements to the retaining walls on the river side, new street lights and the new lane to turn into Georgetown University.
Here's what he says still needs to be done:
-- Install catch basins and concrete pipes.
-- Install signal heads at the new Georgetown University entrance.
-- Mill and overlay a small portion of roadway at the Whitehurst Freeway and Key Bridge.

What will it take to get Metro to realize that Columbus and Veterans Days are NOT the same as Saturdays? While overall ridership might be similar to a Saturday, many of us do work and there's a need for expanded peak service.
Why can Metro not offer something other than regular weekday or regular Saturday service? For example, a few extra trains during the peak rush hour times would make a big difference, but Metro seems incapable of thinking outside the box.

Van Ness, I feel your pain. The National Park Serive gets an F- when it comes to public outreach, far, far worse than Md SHA, VDOT, and even DDOT!! Rock Creek Parkway is worse than ever, especially now that we have steel plates at Virginia Avenue, though I think I finally found a reasonable shortcut to use during AM rush hour (and no, I'm not revealing it on a public forum, sorry).
Dr. G...any chance we could get an update on Rock Creek Parkway? When is the next phase going to start, and will it involve double lane closures? Or has the National Park Service kept you in the dark as well?
And nashpaul, why not just drive to work on Veterans Day? With so many people off the roads should be much emptier than normal. Just beware that some things (such as rush hour lanes, rush hour reversals on Canal Road and Rock Creek Parkway) will not be in effect on Monday, and those roads may be worse than normal.

And nashpaul, why not just drive to work on Veterans Day?
Maybe, just maybe, they don't have a car? Ever think of that?

I just don't understand why metro can't run regular midday weekday service all day on monday. They don't have to run the normal amount of rushhour trains but many people still have to work on monday. Midday service trains run every 6 minutes, while saturday service trains run every 12 minutes in the morning and then 6 minutes midday. I have never had veteren's day off in my life so it's not really a holiday in my book (thanks montgomery county schools).
And no Woodley Park I cannot just drive, I do not have a car.

Dr., what's going on on Beach Drive? It's closed from Tilden Street south, and I cannot find any information on the Rock Creek Parkway Web site. The LEAST they could do is post something at Tilden and Connecticut. It's a lond way down to Beach Drive, and a long drive back. Help!
