HOV Change
Starting Monday, drivers must be in three-person carpools to use the HOV lane section between Duke Street and Springfield between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. That segment had been open to all drivers since 1982, to help ease congestion around the Springfield interchange. Now that the interchange has been rebuilt to improve traffic flow, Virginia has decided to restore HOV rules.
State transportation officials say 2,500 non-HOV vehicles were using the lanes in this section. Half probably will use the regular through lanes of Interstate 395 and half will use the local lanes, to exit at Springfield. Peak volumes on the HOV lanes likely will drop by 30 percent, while peak volumes on regular lanes through the interchange likely will increase by 8 percent, the state says.
Red Line Weekends
Metro is replacing a switch outside Medical Center Station in Bethesda. This weekend, the work is scheduled to begin at 9 o'clock tonight and end at midnight Sunday, but the project will take an additional three weekends to complete. During the work times, expect big delays, because trains from both directions will have to take turns sharing a track between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor.
On the upcoming weekends, work also starts at 9 p.m. Fridays and ends at midnight on Sundays. Those weekends are: Jan. 25-27, Feb. 1-3 and Feb. 8-10.
Metro Elevator
The platform elevator at Virginia Square Station is out of service for the next 10 weeks while it is modernized. Free shuttle buses are available to take passengers from Virginia Square to Clarendon Station. Call 202-962-1825 to request the shuttle.
Transportation Forum
The Prince William Committee of 100, a non-partisan civic group, is sponsoring a forum on transportation issues at 7:45 p.m. Thursday Jan. 17 in the Four Points Sheraton, 10800 Vandor Lane, Manassas. A panel of speakers will discuss four transportation methods that Northern Virginians are using or may soon be using: ferry service, slugging, bus rapid transit and high-occupancy or toll lanes.
Greenbelt Road Work
Watch for lane closures on Route 193 (Greenbelt Road) at Hanover Parkway from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays. The work is part of a project to improve traffic flow through the intersection.
DASH Route Changes
A new schedule for Alexandria's buses takes effect on Sunday, Jan. 20.
The AT2 route will be split into two separate routes, with the AT2 route operating on the current alignment between Braddock Road Metrorail Station and Lincolnia Road. The new AT1 route will operate on the current AT2 alignment between Seminary Plaza and Eisenhower Avenue Metrorail Station.
Weekday midday AT7 service between King and Royal Streets and the Lee Center will be eliminated. The midday AT4 route will be extended from City Hall to the Lee Center. Saturday AT4 service between the King Street Metro Station and the Lee Center will be eliminated, but the Saturday AT4 route will be extended from City Hall to the Lee Center.

Bob Marbourg just reported that the Virginia police are out on I-395 giving tickets left and right. Rather obnoxious of them, I must say, to do that on the very first day of the new HOV rule. I drive on I-395 just about every day and the variable message signs advising of the change were HARD to read (and I've known about the change for several months).
