Traffic Advisories for DC

Federal agencies have a couple of traffic advisories for you.

President Bush is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union speech tonight at about 9 o'clock, but the U.S. Capitol police will close off streets around the Capitol at 7:30 p.m. You'll find a full list of the streets involved at this Capitol police Web page.

The National Park Service announced that on Wednesday, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., it will close the inbound (or eastbound) ramp that leads from Memorial Bridge to the Kennedy Center and Rock Creek Parkway. This is for tree pruning, unrelated to the longterm project on the parkway.

Detour: Go to 23rd Street southbound, turn right at Independence Avenue and to then head north toward the Kennedy Center and Rock Creek Parkway.

Could we get some clarification on the closure of EB I-66? Is that the left hand or right hand ramp? Because one can get to RCparkway either way (either along the river or through the depressed section of roadway)

I believe Dr. Gridlock said it's the ramp from Memorial Bridge, not I-66. That's the loop-around ramp to the right of the Lincoln Memorial as you leave the bridge.

Rich-- thanks, my mistake. You're right--I was picturing a different ramp on a different road. I can't imagine the detour won't be obvious to anyone blocked--it's all of 250 feet longer to go around that way.

Not to mention at some time of the day, the detour is much faster then the signed ramp (because you essentially drive around that yield sign that backs up).

Anyone else ever notice how the Park Service uses the standard "State Law, Yield to Peds in X-walk" sign on that ramp, despite that it is not in a state?

I noticed that the day that sign went up and was amused by it. I wondered which agency was responsible for the error. I'm always tempted to hand-fashion a correction and to drive down there with duct tape some night to "fix" it, but I have better ways to waste time :-)

I hadn't noticed that sign, but I do notice the pedestrian stop sign that's there, but angled so as to create a lot of confusion as to whom it's directed to.

"I noticed that the day that sign went up and was amused by it. I wondered which agency was responsible for the error."

Owned and maintained by the National Park Service, though capital improvement projects go through the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division of FHWA. Simple mistake, they just pulled the standard design for the sign right out of the "Standard Highway Signs" book or the "Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices" without any human brain looking at it before submitting the plan to the sign shop. There are two variations of that sign...a yield to peds and stop for peds...which addresses the differences in State laws, but there is no official variation for DC or other non-states. Unfortunately, since the sign itself is an informational sign and not in and of itself a regulatory sign, one could not challenge a ticket based on that discrepancy.
