The Weekend and Beyond

Wilson Bridge
Avoid it this weekend. The inner loop will be shifted over to the new span, which should be in use by midday Sunda. But during the weekend work, expect long delays heading toward Virginia.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, the inner loop will be squeezed down to a single lane. Drivers may recall a similar weekend back in 2006, when the bridge's first new span opened.

Project managers remind us that the delays that weekend were up to 90 minutes, even though the total traffic volume was reduced by more than 80 percent because drivers heard the congestion warnings.

Metrorail
Track maintenance on the Green, Yellow, Orange, Blue and Red
lines will cause delays Friday night through Sunday as trains share a single track around the work zones. Look here for details.

The switch replacement at Mount Vernon Square, continuing to cause delays on the Green and Yellow lines Friday night through Sunday night, has one more weekend to go after this. The Nationals are out of town this weekend but will be back when the switch project wraps up next Friday night through Sunday (June 6-8).

The transit authority offers some suggestions here about alternatives routes to and from the ball games.

For drivers, the free parking in Lot 8 at RFK Stadium and the free Nationals Express shuttle continue to be good bets. (D.C. United is not playing at RFK either this weekend or next.)

Canal Road Paving
An overnight repaving project is scheduled to begin Monday on Canal Road between Arizona Avenue and Foxhall Road in Northwest Washington. The work will be done each night from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. and should be done on June 13.

During the work hours, eastbound traffic will be diverted to MacArthur Boulevard via Arizona Avenue and return to Canal Road at Foxhall Road. Westbound traffic will be rerouted to MacArthur Boulevard via Foxhall Road to Arizona Avenue.

D.C. Bridge Repairs
The 18-month repair project on Southwest Washington's 11th Street Bridge in the L'Enfant Plaza area was delayed, and work is now scheduled to begin on Monday.

The exit ramp to 12th and D streets SW will be closed. Traffic will detour to 15th Street SW, then Independence Avenue and back to 12th Street SW. Drivers coming north from Virginia will have bridge access via a temporary crossover lane created by expanding the 11th Street SW roadway.

Pass Center Moving
The Northern Virginia E-ZPass Customer Service Center will have a new home on Monday: 610 Herndon Parkway, Suite 900, Herndon. It's north of the Dulles Toll Road near the Fairfax County Parkway interchange.

That's where drivers can open accounts, make payments and pick up or exchange transponders. The hours will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, but customers also can use www.ezpassva.com or call 877-762-7824 for account assistance.

Bridge Testing Done
The District has successfully finished testing the swing span on the Frederick Douglass Bridge, which takes South Capitol Street over the Anacostia River. The testing had led to bridge closures over the past few weekends.

Georgia Avenue Project
The resurfacing program along Georgia Avenue between Veirs Mill Road and Randolph Road is wrapping up following some delays caused by May's heavy rains and utility problems. Watch for single lane closures weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Beltway Road Work
Watch for single lane closures on the Capital Beltway (both sides) at Branch Avenue weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., where the interchange is under reconstruction.

In the Tysons Corner area, watch for lane and shoulder closures on the Beltway (both sides) and its ramps from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. to noon on Friday. Those closures are part of early work on the HOT (high occupancy or toll) lanes construction project.

Better VRE Parking
The Burke Centre parking deck will open Monday, several weeks ahead of schedule. Passengers will be able to walk from the deck right to the train platform.

Some tips from VRE: Enter at the east end of the building and exit to the west, platform access is from the second level, spaces for disabled people are on the first and second levels.
