Baltimore Envy
It's hard to complain about live music options in Washington. We could probably use a couple more good, medium-sized clubs, but for the most part you can see every kind of music almost every night of the week in town and the surrounding 'burbs. Still, we've been keeping an eye on some shows that are going to Baltimore, but not coming to D.C. and it's enough to make you wonder what's going on. Here, for instance, is a short list of artists and bands that will play in Baltimore some time in the next few months, but don't yet have any D.C. dates scheduled:
Elvis Costello, Dwight Yoakam, the Roots, Floetry, Steve Winwood, Miranda Lambert, Drive By Truckers, India Arie, LeAnn Rimes and Kasey Chambers.
And that doesn't even include the two dozen or so bands including Coldplay, Garbage and the New York Dolls that will take part in the HFStival at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
Perhaps this is just a temporary trend. Obviously the opening of the Rams Head Live in Baltimore has something to do with it. But Costello, Yoakam, Rimes and the Roots could easily sell out shows in both towns. So why are we the ones missing out?

Garbage is playing at the 9:30 Club on 4/21. Tickets, however, sold out in a few hours.

I for one am glad to see this trend of good musicians coming to Balimore or even Columbia (Merryweather Post). The drive to Nissan from Baltimore totally stinks.

i hear you Joe, I had to head up to Baltimore to see Diplo last weekend, no DC visits EVER. Anyway, at they had $1 rails for an hour, and Hollertronix brought the pain.

I work in Columbia, MD and I think that better groups are performing in Fairfax, Va at the Patriot Center.

There is no better place that DC for live music! All of those bands have played in this area before (Billy Idol and the Drive By Truckers were at the 9:30 club; Elvis Costello and Dwight Yoakam and LeAnn Rimes have all played at WolfTrap; and the Roots have played numerous times at 9:30 Club.) Not sure what the complaints are about!

would you rather see elvis costello in a cavernous new club with crappy sound and tvs galore in _baltimore_, or outdoors with a cooler of beer and emmylou harris at wolf trap on july 31?

Last time I checked, Wolf Trap was in Virginia. Has it been moved to DC?

DC is jaded. They couldnt even support the best radio station of all time enough to keep it around. Baltimore Fans know how to have a good time, not to mention, keep the peace. Ive heard it said a million times, DC is not a fun town to play in. The shows are in the beginning, genearally dull, and for the most part, the crowds are indifferent and unresponsive, until they get trashed after a few hours, and then all hell breaks loose. (Not cool, though pseudo-music loving morons may beg to differ). But you cant blame them for being jaded, -They have gotten the less shitty end of the stick for years when it comes to concerts. Thats old news. The Good news is Baltimore is a laid back, fun, and consistent audience to play for, and were all very glad that Artists are finally relizing that. So get over it, and come to Baltimore to see a show! Its not too far :) And if thats an impossible task, there is always the 9;30 club. Most bands who perform in Baltimore make a pit stop there, too. And Billy Idol killed it, FYI. I think that he got the largest response from the crowd at HFStival, than any other performance. And as soon as his performance began, an awsome lightning storm errupted, and rightfully so. He was soaked and loving it. Was very proud to see he can rock it like noone else. :)
