Imaxing Out
For everyone who has been wishing more first-run Imax movies would come to D.C., I have good news.
First, the rereleased 3D, Imax version of "The Polar Express" will screen daily beginning this Wednesday at the Samuel C. Johnson Imax Theater in the Museum of Natural History. Showtimes are at 5 and 7 p.m. Even though "The Polar Express" arrives on DVD tomorrow, the opportunity to see it on a huge screen in three-dimensions may make a trip to Natural History worthwhile, especially if you're looking for holiday-oriented things to do with the kids.
Harry Potter fans also can take heart: On Dec. 16, the Imax version of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" comes to the Lockheed Martin Theater at the Air and Space Museum. Given Harry's box office performance over the weekend, I'd imagine plenty of wizard wannabes will line up to see the Imax version. Both of these are promising developments that hopefully signal the arrival of more Imax movies in D.C.'s future. In the meantime, count these as two early holiday gifts from the Cinematic Santa Claus.

Any word on when Harry Potter tix go on sale? It's not on your Post site you linked, and it's not at the the theater's site (http://www.si.edu/imax/#lockheed). While I'm here, does anyone have any recommendations of IMAX films showing now at the Smithsonian theaters? I never go because I never really get word on which ones are really good. The Post really should do mini-reviews every month on what the Smithsonians have to offer.

Intrigued: That is a mistake. We get our showtimes from an outside vendor, who gets the showtimes from the theaters themselves. Sometimes the theater owners connect the times with the Imax version by accident. I'll alert our vendor to this problem.
Kalorama: Don't know when Potter tix go on sale, but I'll try to find out and alert people post-Thanksgiving.

They're up now! Go to http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase and click on December on the left. Shows are at 5:30. It's playing 12/16 through 1/2 (yes, including holidays). With fees, a pair of tickets comes to $25.

Just saw the 3-D Polar Express. Awesome! Well worth the $12 ticket price to reserve ahead over the phone (tonight's showings were sell outs, so the extra $2 was money well spent). Thanks for the tip. The Jazz Cafe was great too although we didn't stay for more than just a few minutes.

It's about time. I don't think there's been a commercial IMAX movie at the Smithsonian since Attack of the Clones three years ago. That was the very first of the converted IMAX movies. It wasn't widescreen, and it was cut by twenty minutes. Neither will be a problem this time.

Under "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: The IMAX Experience" in Fandango for our area (today's date), it brings up the P and G Montgomery Mall Cinema, the one mall on Democracy Boulevard in the Bethesda area. Is this a mistake, or do they really have an IMAX screen?
