Archives Outdoors

The National Archives Building on the Mall will be closed at least until July 11. Electrical equipment damaged in last week's storms needs to be reparied and tested, said Miriam Kleiman, public affairs specialist for the Archives. The building will reopen when that process is complete, but until then, the museum has devised another way to satiate history-hungry visitors.

Acknowledging that the Fourth of July is high-traffic time for the building that houses the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the Archives erected an outdoor tent featuring facsimiles of the famous founding documents and some interactive features from Archives exhibits. The Archives Exploration Tent is on Pennsylvania Avenue between Seventh and Ninth Streets and is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
