Sweet Relief
It's been nearly a year since Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast, but there's still a lot of work to be done. You can do your part next week simply by choosing to splurge on a huge dinner. Share our Strength has organized its second annual Restaurants for Relief. Across the nation, restaurants will contribute a portion of their proceeds from dinner Tuesday, Aug. 29, to hurricane rebuilding efforts.
That means that you'll have carte blanche to spend the big bucks at DC Coast, Capital Grille, Vidalia and more fine restaurants. Other participating locations include Whole Foods and La Madeleine. So organize a group of friends and be prepared to order a lot.

The contribution differs. Bistro Bis will donate 10% of tonight's profits and the Capital Grille will donate $25,000 regardless of the night's profits.

I went to Madeleine and the staff had no clue that they were doing this. I had someone call a manager to confirm that they were participating. Still, it was difficult to tell how much exactly they were donating. Next time, they should have this information together. I'm sure it would encourage more participation. Also having more than a few nasty chain restaurants in the Dupont area participating might help.

What exactly does a "portion of their proceeds," mean exactly? Are they contributing two dollars per diner off a Capital Grill check? Or is is it some meaningful contribution?
If you want to make a difference, unless there is some disclosure by the restaurants, check out the 501(c)(3), if you're comfortable make a direct contribution. Then go to dinner somewhere that is more transparent or doesn't need to market off a charity.
