Toasting Peace

In planning and suggesting local activities, we Gurus try to keep our eyes out for interesting and cool events (see Julia's post on the Genesis cover band). I like to find events that blend random different interests into one affair. Opera dinners? Travel book events? Why not? So, when I came across an event blending wine tasting with current affairs, I figured it was worthy of a post.

The Wines of Peace will be a guided tasting of three wines each from Israel and Lebanon. Both nations comprise strong wine-making regions with warm climates and ideal grape-growing conditions. As the residents of both countries try to return to their lives, this is a small tribute to their commerce, productivity and peace. It also doesn't hurt that the wines are reputedly quite delicious. According to Laurent Guinand, the president of event sponsor GiraMondo Wine Adventures, Israel and Lebanon produce popular varietals like cabernet sauvignon and merlot in addition to local blends. The tasting will highlight merlot and chardonnay as well as some blends based on local varietals.

Following the tasting, Middle Eastern mezze snacks will be served, including dolmades, or lamb-stuffed grape leaves, Israeli couscous and tablouleh in cucumber cups. The event takes place at 6:30 on Sept. 7. You can buy tickets here if you're interested.
