Stage Right

September means back-to-school, but it also means back-to-the-theater for several local theater companies. When September rolls around, it seems as if all the world -- or at least the city -- really is a stage and there are lots of shows to choose from. Rather than leave you to fend for yourselves, I've chosen two of the month's highlights for your viewing pleasure.

Halloween's still ages away, but Synetic Theater's "Frankenstein" should tide people over in the meantime with a bevy of haunting themes. Word is that this Kennedy Center adaptation, by the show's director Paata Tsikurishvili, stays close to Mary Shelley's original text while tying it into current themes of science and morality.

Not everyone loves musicals, but even the haters should wonder "Wouldn't It be Loverly?" to see "My Fair Lady" at Signature Theatre. The show is the last production in the converted Arlington garage space before the theater moves into its huge new Shirlington complex. Signature has a way of adding new depth and detail to familiar shows. This one is directed by the theater's visionary artistic director, Eric Schaeffer, so my bet is that this will be a memorable and innovative production.
