Artomatic Watch: Week 3

Artomatic takes on art in the digital age this week with presentations and panels. Hip-hop performances, mobile-making workshops and charity concerts are also on tap.

-Back in the Day: Take a long lunch to check out a documentary about Artomatic 2004. The film, created by artists involved with the last AOM, screens in the Lapis Auditorium from noon until 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

-Hip-Hop on the Positive Tip: Bomani Armah, one of the MCs profiled in this January article and video, brings his good-vibes hip-hop to the Garnet Lounge at 8 p.m. on Friday.

-Music for Healing: Artomatic and D.C Music for Relief team up for Virginia Tech in the wake of the April 16 shootings. The groups have lined up a full day of music performances on the Electric and Cabaret stages on Saturday. Donations will be accepted at both stages for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, a collection set up by Virginia Tech to provide grief counseling, memorials and other services for students.

-Be Like Calder: Artist Paul Sikora leads a mobile-making workshop from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday in the Lapis Auditorium. Kids and kids-at-heart are both welcome to attend.

-To Market, To Market: If Artomatic's like a zany, contemporary art museum, than this Sunday's arts marketplace is like its gift shop. Arts and artisans from the Artomatic ranks sell their wares at a Crafty Bastards-esque fair in the Emerald Cafe from 3 to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

-Documentary Now: Dubbed "Documentary Filmmaking in the YouTube Age," this panel discussion looks at the media landscape independent filmmakers now face. The talk takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday in the Lapis Auditorium; see the listing on the Artomatic site for panelist information.

-Art in the Online Realm: Artist Jack Whitsitt lives and creates in two worlds: the real one and the online one. At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, he'll lead a workshop on creating, buying and musing on art in the online virtual world Second Life.
