Dining With Mom

Mother's Day is reportedly the most popular brunch day of the year. It's a chance to take Mom out and show her you care, while hoping that restaurants don't go to town on overpriced specials. Whether you prefer to order a la carte off the normal menu, find a prix fixe menu that won't break the budget or just wing it without reservations, here are a few restaurants that will make Mom proud.

A La Carte
Bangkok Joe's supplements its regular menu with an array of special light entrees. From noon until 10:30 p.m., the restaurant will serve mimosa tastings and any mini-entree for $14 at lunch and $25 at dinner. Special mini-entrees include soft shell crab tempura and a mussels hot pot. Mimosas come in a variety of flavors such as mint, ginger-lemon, lychee and pomegranate. (202-333-4422)

Cafe du Parc serves the standard menu with eggs in cocotte and typical French breakfast specialties from 7 until 11 a.m. and slow-cooked lamb and steak tartare among lunch specialties from 11 until 2:30 p.m. Be sure to save room for a luscious pastry dessert. (202-942-7000)

Firefly offers up regular brunch with a "green eggs and ham" spinach quiche, orange and vanilla French toast, and an innovative cocktail menu with libations like the fried green tomatillo and the wasabi. (202-861-1310)

Kinkead's serves dinner all day with crab-stuffed salmon, horseradish-crusted skate and grilled dorade available from noon-8 p.m. (202-296-7700)

Oyamel will spice up the day with the regular lunch menu from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Highlights include anything from the ceviche bar, braised short ribs and, for the fearless moms, grasshopper tacos. (202-628-1005)

Vidalia offers lunch from noon-3 p.m. with seasonal Southern dishes like crayfish remoulade, shrimp and grits and spring lamb. Be sure to save room for lemon chess pie, pecan pie or one of the many other rich dessert choices. (202-659-1990)

Prix Fixe Menus and Buffets
701 offers a three-course prix fixe menu for $40. Items include a tuna spring roll, smoked salmon, sweet corn ravioli, slow-baked salmon and grilled langoustines with apricot panna cotta and a dessert tasting among the sweet finishes. (202-393-0701)

Blue Duck Tavern offers the season's finest in a three-course prix fixe brunch for $80 or $35 for children. Entrees include lamb, roast pork and halibut with fruit ice cream as a popular dessert. Seatings are at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. (202-419-6755)

Rasika opens its doors for a special three-course prix fixe brunch at $35 per person or $20 for children. The menu includes masala poached eggs, assorted chicken, fish, lamb and vegetarian options and strawberry kulfi and saffron panna cotta to finish. (202-637-1222)

Healthy restaurant Rock Creek offers a brunch buffet for $35 per person from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. with smoked fish, oysters, roast turkey and filet mignon. (301-907-7625)

Vintage 50 treats moms to an all-you-can-eat brunch spread from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with live music and complimentary mimosas. For $39.99 ($12.99 for children 6-12), the restaurant offers a waffle, omelet and pasta stations, meat carving, a dessert table and plenty of cheese, fruit and salad. (703-777-2169)

If you plan to wing it and take mom out with no reservations, Busboys and Poets, Colorado Kitchen, Creme, the Diner, Evening Star Cafe, Open City and the Tombs take customers on a first-come, first-served basis.
