Georgie James Signs to Saddle Creek

When we first talked with Georgie James last March, they hadn't even played a show and had only a seven-song demo EP to their name. Even so, it was apparent that the group was destined for big things. The band has both the pedigree (featuring former Q and Not U drummer John Davis and local singer-songwriter Laura Burhenn) and the chops (check out the irresistibly catchy '70s AM-pop sound of "Need Your Needs" and "More Lights") to make a splash outside of the local scene. That seems even more likely now that the band has signed with Saddle Creek Records. Davis confirmed the deal with the Nebraska-based label and that the band's debut album, "Places," will be released this fall.

"It seemed like a really good home for us since I've known some of the people there for years, they have a great track record for music, I like Omaha and lived there for a year when I was a kid and they were genuinely interested in the music we're making," Davis said. "It's a label that makes you feel like the possibilities are infinite and that you're free to make the music you want."

Saddle Creek is best known as the home of Bright Eyes, one of the most popular indie rock acts around, whose most recent album, "Cassadaga," debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard charts. The label also releases albums by big-name indie acts such as Cursive and the Faint, and used to be home to Rilo Kiley, who have since jumped to Warner Bros. Georgie James will be playing a handful shows over the summer, including area performances at St. Stephen's Church on Memorial Day weekend (a benefit for One DC and Books for America) and opening for Ted Leo at the Recher Theatre in August, but won't hit the road in full force until around the time the album is released.
