Anne's Wish List: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun
My dream holiday wish is going to sound familiar to break-up artists everywhere: I just need some space. No, not from you, of course. I need space to put people. Because I want to have a party. A really big party.
I've been to fabulous affairs in studios and I've tried hosting shindigs in a one-bedroom apartment, but when we're talking about my wish list, I want a place where I can truly adhere to the-more-the-merrier theory.
At the National Museum of Women in the Arts, I can have 1,000 buddies spread out over the Great Hall and the Mezzanine and roam the galleries for about $14,000. (That wouldn't cover the cost of food or other party attributes, mind you, just the basic space.) I figure, if it's good enough for Chris O'Donnell's wedding reception, it's good enough for me.
Why is it among D.C.'s most pricey party rooms? You would get to survey works by artists from Berthe Morisot to Frida Kahlo, which, uh, is more than I can say for the walls in my place. It is a fitting place to toast women's achievements, even as you let them live out a princess fantasy of gliding across the glossy inlaid floor. That exquisite marble staircase would be perfect for making a grand entrance, reenacting Madonna's "Material Girl" video or saying so long and farewell to the evening, Von Trapp children style.
Not buying it? Get a good look at the Great Hall today, for free, when the museum hosts the Holiday Gift Market. Over 30 women artisans, most of them local, are selling crafts like jewelry, handmade paper, even aprons. The market goes until 5.
