Happy Hours, Happy Dogs

By Fritz Hahn

Is happy hour is more fun with man's best friend? Find out this summer, when bars around the area are organizing weekly events with specials for dogs and their two-legged companions.

Before we get to the regularly scheduled lineup, I should mention the Yappy Hour at the Omni Shoreham Hotel on May 1. A fundraiser for the nonprofit Guiding Eyes for the Blind program, which trains guide dogs for the visually impaired, Yappy Hour is taking place in the hotel's lush back garden. The $30 entry fee covers snacks for you and your pup. RSVPs are required. To reserve a spot or for more information, call 202-756-5111 or e-mail cltaylor@omnihotels.com.

Monday
Cantina Marina
All day
Located on a pier over the Washington Channel, Cantina Marina's a great place to sip a cocktail and enjoy the breeze coming off the water. On Mondays, the bar's Doggie Happy Hour offers a milk bone bar for the pooches and $2 corn dogs for humans. Cans of beer are $4-$5. It's a relaxed setting, but be mindful of your surroundings -- no one wants to hear "Dog overboard!"

Tuesday and Thursday
Hotel Monaco Alexandria
5-8 p.m.
One of the area's longest-running and best-attended pet happy hours, the Doggie Happy Hour went on hiatus last year as the Old Town Holiday Inn was transformed into an upscale Hotel Monaco. But the hotel is open now, and the huge central courtyard is again full of barking and sniffing every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Owners relax and chat as dozens of pugs, bulldogs, poodles and retrievers munch gourmet treats and lap up water. (People can order from the menu of Jackson 20, the hotel's stylish bar.) The annual Halloween party -- complete with a canine costume contest -- is always a treat.

Wednesday
Helix Lounge
5-8 p.m., beginning May 21
At the hippest pet happy hour around, Hotel Helix welcomes dogs and humans to gatherings on its funky patio. Dogs get treats from the Bark Bites menu and fresh spring water, the 20- and 30-something people sip $7 Pet Peeve cocktails and $5 Tail Ale beers and order burgers fresh from the hotel's outdoor grill. (Portions of all sales benefit the Washington Humane Society.) These are in addition to the lounge's usual daily happy hour: half-price burgers and buckets of five bottles of Rolling Rock ($15) or Natural Light ($9) beers from 5 to 7.

New to Helix this year is the "Frisky Business" happy hour, targeted at single pet owners, which happens on the first Wednesday of the month as well as opening night. (Happily coupled-up pet owners are also welcome to bring their dogs to socialize.)

If you're in the market for a new companion, the Humane Society will bring an adoptable dog every week, and should you decide to take the little fella home, Hotel Helix will kick in a night in one of its pet-friendly suites to facilitate "owner and pet bonding," says Helix public relations manager Sarah Crocker.

Friday
Adams Mill Bar and Grill
6-8 p.m., beginning May 16
Sponsored by the Doggie Style Bakery, this happy hour has become a tradition in Adams Morgan. Dogs munch on a selection of sample baked goods, while leash-holders sip discounted pints of beer on the fenced patio.

Saturday
Union Pub
Noon-4 p.m., beginning May 3
People and pooches mix on the shaded patio every Saturday afternoon. Bones and water are available for free, while beers and hot dogs are discounted to happy hour prices. Various dog-affiliated stores and organizations will visit throughout the summer with treats and samples.

Daily
Pat Troy's Ireland's Own
Ever wanted to take your dog to the pub? This Old Town Alexandria staple offers bowls of water on its patio and has a special "Doggy Menu" for four-legged patrons: Choose from chopped chicken or beef, beef stew or lamb stew, all served with a bone on the side, for $3.95.

The Argonaut
The Argo is one of the few bars in the Atlas District with patios, so naturally it's gone to the dogs. (Space for pooches is limited on weekends, when humans crowd in.)
