Riding the Kegbus to the Ballpark
"Take public transportation to Nationals Park." We've been hearing that over and over, from Metro's spokesPeeps to the Nationals' own shuttle service, which will ferry fans from RFK's vast parking lots to the front door of the new stadium.
Personally, I'm looking forward to taking a third option: The Kegbus.
Running before every Friday and Saturday home game, the Kegbus picks riders up at four Capitol Hill bars -- the Pour House, the Hawk and Dove, Finn Mac Cool's and the Ugly Mug -- and drops them at the stadium. The bright yellow schoolbuses make two runs before each game, beginning around an hour before the first pitch, and several runs after.
To get on board, stop in at one of the participating bars, buy a beer and get a special wristband from the bartender or bouncer. (You need to show this to the driver to get on the bus.) In the past, bar staff have been good at announcing when the bus is arriving and ready to depart, but you may want to hang out by the front door just in case. The bus will drop off (and pick up) riders at the stadium at Second and L streets SE.
The bus returns to the ballpark around the middle of the ninth inning, and the driver will wait until it's full before beginning his post-game run. If you get back to the dropoff location and don't see the Kegbus, don't (immediately) despair: It will make two or three runs after each game, depending on demand. Hang out for 15 minutes or so, but after that, it might be worth it to get back on the Metro.
Finally, even though it's called the Kegbus and sponsored by Miller Lite, passengers are not allowed to take drinks out of bars and onto the bus. Sorry -- it's the law.

It's too bad they don't do something like this for every home game. Why just Friday and Saturdays?

Thanks for the update Fritz. This sounds like the civilized way to get to the stadium in my view! A couple fo cold beverages and a ride on the yellow miller lite express. Go Nats!!
