Question Seven: What Now?

In keeping with J.K. Rowling's precedent of ending with the seventh book, this is our seventh and final question for "Closing the Book on Harry Potter." Of course, you can and should continue to share comments to your heart's content on any of the aforementioned queries. We just won't be stoking the conversational fires with additional postings.

So, the inevitable question: Now that you have read (or are reading) "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," how will you channel your magical energies after closing the book? Start reading the entire series again from chapter one? Craft your own fan fiction? Or simply move on to other pop culture and/or literary obsessions? Tell us how you're coping now that the Hogwarts hype is beginning to die down.

Mary Stewart's series about King Arthur is very good, and is suitable for young teens and up! I read these books when I was young, and they were (and still are) very fascinating!

Loved the book and I am devasted by the loss of each character. I've grown to love them all so it was difficult to read of each demise.

This final chapter of the series has it all and I couldn't put it down.

I'm reading #7 for the second time. I love the books and the way the author ages with potter. I've gone back and read several times each volume.
Each time I came back with more.

I'm still feeling a bit sad and nostalgic. I hope we see more from JK Rowling, I love her wit and her wonderful character development.
I love for an era to finish strong, but I'll miss Hogwarts and all the characters so much!

As for me - tons of great fantasy fiction to be explored, and I am working on my own first fantasy fiction book.

Not a fan, but curious if Potter dies?

It was a wonderful ride while it lasted, with the seventh book being my favorite and while I might start the series over at some point I feel it's time to move on and search for the next J.K. Rowlings. What an amzing accomplishment on her part, not just in crafting an immense and inviting world or getting so many children to read but also in the amount of pleasure she btought to so many. That is something to indeed be proud of.

Slate "Book Club" entries have some hilarious comments about what comes next. How about Harry Potter as an aging celeb, a la Cal Ripken, making a nice living doing spots for the local broom dealership. Or a sitcom, "Hogwarts, the Next Generation", with cameos by Harry, Ron, Hermione, etc. during special episodes.

I will look for ward to the movies and probably buy them to see again as I will reread the books. I have lots of books lined up to read and expect to find many more over the years to come. If JKR writes any more, I will buy them.

The great thing about a series of books is that in about a year or two, I will probably reread the series. There are plenty of other good series out that I will move to. Even though the Harry Potter series has ended, its still worth reading again and again.

Probably be melancholy, contemplative, and reflective for a couple of days. I'm thinking about moving writing a novel. Who knows if I will finish it. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time, and the end of Harry Potter seems like as good a time as any to start writing.

I will hope that in the next week or so, I will stop feeling teary when I think of the ending. Now I have to find something else to look forward to, or acquire a new hobby.....cross-stitch? ; )

Posted by: Maritza | July 25, 2007 06:38 PM

Luckily, I have the upcoming 2 movies to tie me over for another three years or so. After that, I, hopefully, will have moved onto another equally worthy pop culture phenomenon.

Posted by: Jackie | July 25, 2007 08:00 PM

I have been reading the Harry Potter series to my twin 6 year old boys this summer. We should be finished with the last book by early next week. It has been fun. After we finish I will ask my local librarian for some further reading suggestions. I am confident that there are a lot of books that will engages my sons' imaginations. In addition, we'll continue to see other ways of engaging our immaginations and having adventures together, whether that be Thai sword fighting or rock climbing or getting lost in a beautiful piece of music.

I really have no interest in becoming fans or engaging in any kind of obsession--pop culture or otherwise. They're books. Good books. But we've pretty much finished them and will move on.

I will channel my energies toward remembering the simple and absolute Good in which J.K Rowling managed to root so much of her energies creating. When I think back to what made me, what I consider to be, a genuinely good person, I am reminded of the people who stood up and told stories of hope and love and peace in a fictional realm, which laid the foundation in our hearts for hope and love and peace in everyday reality. I will hope she writes again, but if she does not, we always have Harry.

Can't wait to read "Hogwart's a History".

I'll wait for J.K.R to write it. If she doesn't I guess I'll give it a try and write it myself.

Having completed a weekend reading of Book 7 -- loved it! -- I'm thinking of re-reading the series backwards. So I'll be starting soon on Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Posted by: Nancy | July 26, 2007 07:32 PM

I did not want the series to end. In my heart, I had hoped J.K. Rowling would decide to continue and write another book about life after Voldemort. However, is there really such a thing? It would be anticlimactic and draging the story to a dull end. I really appreciated how she chose to end it. Though it is a fact we must face the fact that there will no longer be more books on this subject to look forward to, we do have the option of reading it and re-living it all over again. Many years from now, a whole new generation will be encaptivated by Harry and his gang and the thrill will be once again experienced. Thank you Ms. Rowling for bringing Harry to life!

I look forward to relieving it all by reading the books to my own child, who is just a babe. It will have to wait, but it will be wonderful, like coming home. Long Live Harry Potter!!

Harry Potter on audio book CDs is a terrific way to augment and extend one's love of all things Potter. I have them all find it absolutely delightful to hear the story as I'm driving in my car.

For anyone not familiar with the audio versions, Jim Dale reads for the US audience and Stephen Frey for the UK.

They're both terrific, but for me, Jim Dale is the better reader for us Yanks. And besides, Frey's version requires a trip to the UK.

Um....I simply CANT get over the fact that its over. I have read about three chapters every day since it has come out, and am now working on my own fanfiction about Prof. McG (she, Snape and Dumbledore were my fav. Professors) and I have started over with book one. I also am reading book five wiht my little brother, who has yet to read the last too. I suppose I should try to distract myself wiht my other beloved authors (CS Lewis, Jane Austen, and Charlotte Bronte) but it isnt working. I will never get over it, and my hearts hurts. So Bad. I cant get over Lily and Snape!!!! (hearts forever) And FINALLY
