Cookies!
Did everyone check out today's phenomenal Food section on cookies?
I've been open about my love of all sweets baked, so I won't go on and on about that. Even if you're watching your weight better than I am, you should still check out the cookie issue. I think baking can be a great de-stressor and I recommend it to any of you feeling the pressure of holiday chores.
For starters, there is no decision-making involved (once you select a recipe). Unlike other cooking methods, baking requires you to follow the recipe exactly--there is no deviation on the ratio of flour to butter to sugar.
When the cookies or cake or pie comes out of the oven I feel a sense of accomplishment. That's a good feeling when I'm usually mired in guilt and unhappiness over my procrastination problems.
And then the big payoff--relaxing in my favorite chair with the newspaper and eating my homemade baked goods. Who cares about wrapping then?

The guy who wrote the article about setting up the kitchen for a baking marathon left out one item -- stack your favorite holiday CDs on the player and listen while baking. I have several favorites: the three tenors, the Irish tenors, Dean Martin, John Denver, PP&M, Anne Murray, Beach Boys, Eartha Kitt, Sinatra and Crosby. I do a baking marathon the weekend before Christmas and crank up the music and sing along as I bake. By Christmas Eve I'm saturated with music, cookies, and the whole Christmas thing. I love it.
