Holiday Music

If you've been following our daily tips online and in the Home section every week, you might have noticed yesterday's tip to create a holiday playlist on your iPod.

If you actually followed our advice and created such a playlist, we'd like to hear what songs you selected.

Holiday music is a mixed bag, I'll admit. Does the world really need a Mariah Carey Christmas CD or the Beach Boys singing carols?

But I will confess to a few favorites, including Charles Brown's rendition of "Please Come Home for Christmas," Etta James singing "Winter Wonderland," Bruce Springsteen's version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," (I can't help it, I'm from New Jersey.) and of course, Eartha Kitt singing "Santa Baby."

And who doesn't love Vince Guaraldi's Charlie Brown Christmas?

For more ideas, check out these playlists for a dinner party, buffet and cocktail party put together by Chris Richards, a music writer in Style.

Pottery Barn a few years ago came out with a 3-CD set "Hip Holidays" that is perfect for Christmas cocktail parties (Santa Baby, etc.) -- nice way to get a mix of upbeat tunes for grownups.

A while ago, I mixed a CD fo my favorite misanthropic Christmas carols.

Examples:

Grandma got run over by a reindeer
Santa Zombie (only version of this song I like)
You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch
The 12 Days *After* Christmas

(I'm not a Grinch, I just can't do Xmas carols 24/7 without going mad, this provides some nice variety.)

I also like the Nutcracker score, although I know many are tired of this.

My favorite Xmas CD though has to be one that we got from our ISP one year that had lots of Christmas-type music on it that was all instrumental.

I've been listening to Christmas songs (141) on my iPod since Thanksgiving -- Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow, Charlie Brown Christmas, John Denver and the Muppets, Garth Brooks, Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, James Taylor and some other random types. BTW, I'm 33. :)
