Putting up the Tree

Isn't putting up the Christmas tree one of the most irritating chores? No, no, no not the decorating. (Please don't send me e-mails addressed to the Grinch.) I mean just getting the tree in the stand.

In my house this task usually falls to my husband. This is in part because I have been pregnant or convalescing from childbirth during the last few Decembers, and partly because he's a control freak. He claims that it's really not too bad a job. Yet he complains bitterly that his hands get gooked up with sap and pricked by needles. After that he must endure my comments: "No, that's not quite straight." or "Maybe you should move it back the other way." or "I hope you're not getting dirt on my mother's Oriental rug."

That's when he starts cursing and I leave the room for another glass of Kahlua-spiked eggnog.

Can you relate? If so, check out our slide show review of Christmas tree stands that claim to make it all easier.

This post is funny (funny ironic), as my wife is pregnant also but still will not let me touch the Christmas tree. She says I want the tree up too early (is the day after Thanksgiving too early?). She doesn't like the way I hang the ornaments. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one!

I have a 4.5 foot artificial pre-lit tree. Obviously it is very easy to put up. I set it on a game table at my window. A tree skirt is placed under the tree. From outside the tree looks like it is 7 feet tall. The table can't be seen. From inside, I can put loads of gifts literally under the tree! You can even circle a train around the table legs with a village and all the trimmings!

My tree is about 2.5' high and sits on a plant stand. It takes about 30 minutes or less to wrap one strand of lights around it and hang the ornaments. Someday when we have kids we might get a bigger one, but for now it's perfect and low stress!
