Wrap it Up

I work with several people who are more organized than me. One of them is Jura Koncius, who wrote today's set of stories about gift-wrapping. Jura shops for gifts all year long. In early December, she erects a wrapping station in her basement and each night she emerges with several nicely dressed presents to put under her tree.

When I was growing up, my mother would set aside one night, usually around this date in December, to wrap every present except for the ones slated for me. I would help by holding the paper as she quickly taped it all together and when I got older, I got to write the gift tags. It was always a festive evening, just she and I, wrapping and talking. Now that I'm an adult, I'm not nearly as organized as she is, but looking forward to the years when my daughter can stay up and help me dress the presents.

I suspect that many of us are going to be doing some wrapping soon, if we haven't started already. I have not. Well, I did wrap a few presents to send back to Michigan with my in-laws, who came for Thanksgiving. But that was November! It seems like years ago.

In addition to her stories in today's Home section, Jura helped produce the video that actually shows how to wrap a present. I have watched it several times and have found it helpful. Hope you do too.

I plan on wrapping by myself this weekend. I figure it will take me 2-3 hours. I will do this while my 3 year old naps. The thing I dread most is not wrapping. It is putting together DD's madeline doll house and the 800 other assembly necessary toys. I long for the day DD can help wrap. But I guess the kids will never be able to help assemble toys. By the time they are old enough to help wrap their siblings toys, they are probably old enough to just unwrap an item that we assemble post holidays.

This year I am going over to my sister's house and wrapping her Christmas presents for her since she is pregnant with twins! We're also going to watch "Annie," one of our favorite movies, and have a cookie swap with our mother. My son (3 years old) is coming along to help decorate cookies.

My mom used to let me do the wrapping, too. Even gifts for myself (clothing in no-name boxes). I never looked in the boxes (I swear).

Me, I'm done and they've been shipped already. Nice to get it out of the way. I have a few random cards left and I'm baking cookies this weekend.
