Principal Pinder plans to add some reforms to the school uniforms for next year. "I'm hoping that if kids help create the uniform or get creative with their talents, the uniform could be something that fuels pride in the school instead of dismay or a feeling that it's us versus them. It's really not," he said. "It's a way to make the kids feel good about themselves."

Pinder told students from McKinley to submit their designs for a better school uniform. Six students already did that.

The students are enthusiastic about this. "I'm sure that by incorporating the students' ideas in the uniform, the students will feel included and will be more willing to wear the uniform," said 11th grader, Briana Rivers.

"I think it's brilliant, because I'm making some of the designs and if we could get different people's opinion, maybe we can work in some new colors," said sophomore Venice Puryear.

Another designer Chineye Anasoh added, "I think new students will probably be happy to see change in the school uniforms."

The plan is for a showcase to take place sometime in 4th advisory.

"My hope is that we can take the new uniform, get a clothing company to design them based on what we're looking for, and then have some of the kids do a fashion show," said Pinder.

During the fashion show, the student will vote on the uniform style they want.

For those students worried about buying new uniforms, The planned uniforms will decrease rather than increase uniform price. Students can buy polo shirts from other stores and buy the patch in the school.

"My goal is to give kids options so it's not the same uniform every day. It's going to be more hip, more stylish. It's going to be a fun thing instead of a feeling like it's an unfair responsibility," said Pinder. "A uniform shouldn't be a loss of uniqueness; it should actually bring a feeling of uniqueness."

I think that the principal's idea for allowing students design uniforms is a good idea. Being allowed to wear what you want is of course better, but if you are forced to wear uniforms then at least you can decide what they look like.
