We Need a Recycling Program Now!
By Karen Vanegas

McKinley needs to recycle. We need student, teacher and administration involvement. Our school's vision plan does not have enough emphasis on learning how to care for the environment. We all produce a great deal of waste that we can recycle. We recently had a problem with vandalism in our school. What better way to learn how to care for our surroundings than to recycle?
Montgomery County and Virginia Beach City Public Schools have already established recycling programs years ago. Their school systems are twice as big as District of Columbia Public Schools. If they are able to create a functioning recycling program, then so can we. We ought to set a standard for McKinley Tech students to be environmental preservers, and to be leaders of the whole school system. We can turn to Montgomery County and Virginia Beach City Public Schools as examples.
Technology has made our lives much easier. Our society has advanced a great deal. However, the preservation of our environment and technological innovations are both important. High school students have to complete one hundred hours of community service. As students we can accomplish this by getting involved with recycling in our school. We can't save the planet all at once. Nevertheless, we can recycle. Mr. Pinder should get in touch with the city waste management and arrange for recycling pick-ups at McKinley. We need glass and aluminum recycling bins as well as paper bins. Then all of us should pitch in.
