Golf Team Finishes up 2nd Year
By Veronica Jones
McKinley has teed off its second year of golf. Coach McClinton Brown is the MTHS sponsor. The golfing program is under the DCIAA, which sends a bus to pick up the members for practice. Former Channel 7 newscaster, Paul Berry, pays for the lessons, while former pro-golfers give the actual lessons. The golf equipment is included in the price of the lessons.
"We are not officially a competitive team," said Brown. "Right now, all we're doing is taking lessons. This means that we do not compete in real golf tournaments. We are actually preparing ourselves in order to become competitive. The only competitive school in the District is Wilson."
Alongside Coach Brown, some members also wish to have the team become competitive.
"I do hope the team becomes competitive," said Corey Gibson, a tenth-grader. "If so, it'll bring better sports to MTHS and hopefully, more people will become interested."
The team is coed with approximately seven girls and thirteen boys. The season began in mid-April and no experience was needed in order to join. It is open to everyone, but Brown prefers if seniors didn't join.
"Last year, I had made the mistake of opening the team to seniors only," he said. "That didn't go well because the DCIAA competition landed on the same day as their prom. This year was a little different. I opened it to everyone and left the choice of joining up to the seniors."
This is many of the female members' first time at the sport. So far, they seem to be enjoying it.
"Having Coach Brown bring the program to McKinley was a cool idea," said tenth-grader, Valerie Pope. "This was my first time being involved in such a sport and I'd recommend it to anyone."
"I'm glad Coach Brown brought the program to Tech," said LaShay Wilkerson. "I joined as just something to do, but I've really ended up liking it."
Practice takes place every Thursday from 3pm to 4pm at the East Potomac Golf Course.
