Changing fashion trends among students

by Cristina Brown

Parents all have different ways of embarrassing their children and the way life was in their high school days has changed from when they were young. Yet, by the time the eyes start rolling, ma and pa have already started to go back to their younger days in high school and begin to gossip about what clothes they used to wear and how they used to style their hair. Now, there are some trends that will hopefully never come back in style, like big hair and never ending cans of hairspray for girls; with those yearbook pictures where girls' hair takes over the whole picture, or maybe those old Cosby show sweaters that the guys in the math books wear. Nobody wants to be them, hopefully.
There are many different ways of dressing and wearing hair at this school. As the seasons change, so do the outfits. Fashion trends change year after year in a school. Sometimes trends start as a mistake or just a way to be different, then others follow and pretty soon everyone wants to get those new shoes or get that new bag or rip their jeans like everyone else. Now that the second quarter is off to a start, students are beginning to realize that there are new trends roaming the halls of Robinson. There are many styles of clothing worn differently this year than last year.
Trends vary throughout different groups of students. For girls there is a much broader range of trends. The shoes for girls can go from the Ugg Boots, which are very popular since they are all different, to Vans skate shoes, which are comfortable slip-on shoes. Some Ugg boots have a heel and others are just flat, some rise up to the knee and others in the middle of the shin. Most would agree with junior Christine Barry that the "Ugg boots are definitely in right now, but I don't like the really big bulky boots that take over the legs."
Sophomore Emily Diemer loves the "Vintage look," but she has always had her own style in liking "polka dot patterns on anything." She dislikes the "flower patterns and the older way of dressing." She claims she doesn't do anything trendy with her hair, just kind of letting it do its own thing. She, like most other girls, likes to hit the sales especially at popular stores like "Hollister and Forever 21." Abercrombie is also another clothing store that has what teens like to wear; yet again it is another way to make your wallet rather thin. Although Diemer likes these stores, if she sees the same thing in a place like JC Penny or Kohl's, she will head there instead of spending twice as much on a pair of jeans that she could easily find somewhere else for cheaper.
One of the popular shoes last year was the Chuck Taylor's, or the Converse that are available in a variety of colors. Birkenstocks and Jordan are continued onto this year with many people, especially Birkenstocks with the girls since they are so comfortable and typically cheap.
There are also those big belts with long shirts and tight jeans; headbands of different thickness; leggings with long shirts or skirts, all for girls of course. This style is more for junior Caroline Burguess who feels that the "Bohemian trend is in with all those straight leg jeans and head bands...but not polos." She claims, though, that the most she has ever "spent on a pair of shoes was $100," so looking good doesn't always mean that that wallet is as full as it should be. Usually the hair styles are both long and straight or shoulder length and curly. For the guys some have long hair like in the 80's, but some also have short hair that may or may not be gelled.
Although there are many different groups, each has to have something in common- a trend, a way of showing that they are a group. Trends are what keep friends together most of the time.
The trends have evolved in many different ways, but each time there are always those trendy people in high school that know just what to wear and on what days. What you wear and how you act really shape who you are as a student here at Robinson.
