Donating Housing, Finding Missing Persons

During a time of devastation, many hurricane victims are turning to the Internet to find resources.  Several posting boards have been set up for housing, missing persons and volunteer services. There is also a resource registry online, established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, that allows users to list donations they would like to make.

D.C. firehouses are accepting donations of toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, lotion, shampoo, razors, shaving cream, hairbrushes, combs, hair oil, Q-tips, toilet paper and dental floss. Those looking for housing, or offering housing, can use the online tool provided by moveon.org.

Virginians looking to volunteer can call 866-880-4288 from Friday, Sept. 9, to Monday, Sept. 12, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.  If you would like to offer housing to evacuees, moveon.org has created a forum that allows volunteers to list Virginia housing by filling out an online form.

Marylanders can also list housing opportunities on moveon.org or visit marylandcares.us for local opportunities.

If you are looking for federal assistance, you must first register with FEMA and then begin searching for government benefits.
