On Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, Maryland-based Duratek will hold a family fun day and yard sale at its corporate headquarters at 10100 Old Columbia Road, Columbia, Maryland, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. There will be children's activities, including visits from Howard County police and firefighters, police cruisers on hand and a police demonstration of their canine bomb-sniffers; a raffle for Ravens' tickets; and a bake sale. The American Red Cross will be on hand for those interested in, and able to, donate blood. A rain date is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005. MARYLAND Anne Arundel firefighters traveled to Houston's Astrodome to deliver goods as part of an effort coordinated by Annapolis Cares, a Maryland group organized to coordinate local relief efforts. Other benefits were sponsored by the Equilibrium Horse Center and the state's Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (PDF). Howard rescue workers traveled to Gretna, La., joining a Maryland contingent of about 600 civilians and military personnel deployed to the region. The Volunteer Center Serving Howard County urges residents to give money to directly to the Salvation Army and Red Cross. Other area groups are coordinating giving efforts as well. The Virginia Department of Health announced today it's offering free child safety seats to the evacuees who have relocated to the state. The child safety seats are available through Virginia's low income safety seat distribution program. State Heath commissioner Robert Stroube says the relocated families need help to ensure their children are transported safely. In order to qualify for a seat, Katrina victims must meet certain requirements including attending a safety seat installation and use class and sign a waiver of liability.
