Georgetown-Duke preview
Top-ranked Duke faces Georgetown on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Multi-Sport Field. And the unusual start time--the early start is because the Georgetown women face Rutgers at 2 p.m., and the Multi-Sport Field does not have permanent lights--means area fans have an unusual chance to see two top-notch games.
At 4 p.m. in Charlottesville, defending national champion Johns Hopkins faces No. 2 Virginia at Klockner Stadium. It's roughly 120 miles from Georgetown to Charlottesville. So if the Georgetown game ends at 1:15...and one can be on nearby Key Bridge and then I-66 at 1:30...Only in the Washington, DC-area, kids...
The Georgetown-Duke game features a rarity: Duke fifth-year senior attackman Matt Danowski (17 goals, 21 assists) is expected to be defended by fifth-year senior defender Jerry Lambe. They were teammates at Farmingdale H.S. in New York.
Meantime, Duke sophomore attackman Max Quinzani (25 goals) is likely to be defended by sophomore Chris Nixon. The two were teammates in Duxbury, Mass.
Perhaps the best-known battle between former high school teammates came when Johns Hopkins attackman Matt Panetta faced Elmont, N.Y., teammate Pat McCabe, a defenseman at Syracuse, in 1991.
The matchup was a draw. The Blue Jays won the regular season meeting, 18-12. Panetta had a big game--three goals and four assists--but was not defended by McCabe until late in the game.
In a rematch in the NCAA quarterfinals, Syracuse won, 11-8. McCabe defended Panetta from the outset and held him to one goal.
"It's not something that happens very often," Georgetown Coach Dave Urick said of high school teammates matching against each other in college.
