Curry Weighs In

It's Wednesday. The big games are not until Saturday. Normally, TFBO2F treats this day the way Louden Swain treated that crucial weigh-in in the 1985 movie "Vision Quest." To get where we want to go, we have to make it through this first.

Then Dave Curry called to "weigh in" on the Virginia-Maryland game, as well as where UVa is so far this season. And now our countdown can begin.

Curry was an all-American midfielder at Virginia in the late-1990s and played on the US World team in 1998. He later spent three years as an assistant coach at Virginia, and was on the staff when the team won the national title in 2003. A Connecticut native, Curry lives in the Washington area and has very kindy ageed to be TFBO2F's go-to guy for Virginia and for offensive lacrosse this spring.

Everyone in the Virginia camp is excited about the midfield's growth.

One of the things people are noticing is that this year, as opposed to last year, Virginia has a lot of different offensive options out of the midfield. And that really frees up the attack to do a couple different things. They're running 10-11 midfielders. Virginia has youth there, but also has a lot of depth.

There's still a lot of question marks. [Freshman goalie] Adam Ghitelman is still learning about the Division I level and I still think the defense has to gel a little bit. They also have questions at the faceoff 'x.'

The typical Maryland team likes to dictate the tempo and control the ball to stop runs. Maryland has always played a pretty controlled set offense. It's not a slow-down offense, but a patient one.

A lot of [Saturday's game] comes down to the middle of the field with faceoffs and who can control the tempo.

Every Maryland team is focused on being physical. For 15 or 20 years it was always hard-nosed Maryland teams under Dick Edell against soft UVa teams. They called Charlottesville a "country club" and things like that. But now that Virginia has won a couple national titles, I don't think they're afraid to go toe-to-toe with anyone."

I clicked on the link looking for comments from Stephen Curry. And then I found your blog. Good stuff, Christian.
