He Stops Shots, and Serves Them

After becoming the all-time leader in saves for Marymount last Saturday, senior Alex Hammer headed straight for a bar. Only he wasn't there to celebrate.

Hammer, the starting goalkeeper for the Saints, also works four nights a week as a bartender in Georgetown. An example of his schedule came following an 11-10 loss to Greensboro last Saturday. Hammer finished with 20 saves, giving him a program-record 726 in his career.

After the game, he briefly iced his various bruises and minor injuries and then arrived at work for a shift that spans from 5 p.m. until 4:30 a.m.

Hammer also maintains a 3.6 grade-point average as an accounting major and is considering attending law school.

"He's been our captain for three years," Saints Coach Jon Reynolds said. "He does everything on another level, on and off the field."

Speaking of another level, Hammer was the starting goalie at DeMatha in 2004 and was recruited by several Division I programs. He initially attended the Naval Academy, but left early in his freshman year and transferred to Marymount. He played particularly well in a 10-2 victory over Catholic yesterday. He finished with 10 saves and gave up one goal for the Saints (6-5) against the Cardinals (4-5).

Hammer said his lasting legacy at Marymount is that he played four years--which, given his schedule, is not as easy as it sounds.

"From when I started here, we only have seven seniors left," Hammer said. "And we're all on defense. We wanted to stick together."
